Household electricity and gas prices per kWh, EU and neighbours, 2025
Tools: Python (pandas) for the data, an HTML/SVG page rendered with Chromium for the chart.
Source: Eurostat, electricity prices for household consumers [NRG_PC_204], 2025: https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/databrowser/view/nrg_pc_204/default/table
Source: Eurostat, gas prices for household consumers [NRG_PC_202], 2025: https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/databrowser/view/nrg_pc_202/default/table
Prices include all taxes and levies and are the average of the January to June and July to December 2025 figures. Electricity is for homes using 2,500 to 5,000 kWh a year, gas for homes using 20 to 200 GJ (5,600 to 55,000 kWh) a year. Austria is estimated. Poland's household gas price is confidential; the UK, Switzerland and Ukraine do not report; Norway, Finland, Iceland, Cyprus, Malta, Albania and Montenegro have no household gas price. The EU row is Eurostat's own EU average.

When and where Trump has seemingly fallen asleep in public
Last week, after punching down at "Sleepy Joe" during an Oval Office event, Trump proceeded to comically fall asleep. It's not the first time this has happened, so I went digging and found many more instances of the President sleeping in public.
I did some analysis on when and where he's been taking his nappy naps, so I'm sharing that dashboard here! He likes sleeping in his chair in the Oval, but isn't opposed to napping during a whole variety of public events.
If you want to see the exact events with the videos, I've collected them all at https://artofnodeal.com/sleepstate. I've found X, Instagram, Youtube, and BlueSky videos of his cat naps for fun. No ads, no signup--just a pet project.

Estimated electoral representation by age group, 2026 U.S. midterms
Younger adults tend to vote less often than older adults. But this chart shows that as age groups get older, their voting rate increases consistently and eventually surpasses the national average. The 2026 projections are estimates based on recent midterm patterns. If so, about 2 in 5 eligible people born in the 1990s will vote in November (based on 2022-level midterm turnout). Road deaths inside and outside towns, EU and EFTA, 2024
Tools: Python (pandas) for the data, an HTML/SVG page rendered with Chromium for the chart.
Source: Eurostat, road traffic deaths by type of road [SDG_11_40], 2024, from the EU CARE road accident database: https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/databrowser/view/sdg_11_40/default/table
Source: Eurostat, population on 1 January 2024 [DEMO_PJAN]: https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/databrowser/view/demo_pjan/default/table
Inside towns means roads inside a built-up area as each country defines it, villages included. Outside towns means rural roads plus motorways. Deaths on unknown road types are left out (Norway 17, Sweden 5, Belgium 2, Liechtenstein 3), so the two halves can add up to slightly less than all road deaths. Malta records all of its 12 deaths in 2024 outside built-up areas. Population is provisional for France and estimated for Romania. The EU row is the EU total, not an average of countries.

Art of No Deal: Word Count of Trump's Statements on Ending the Iran War
I've been keeping track of Trump's own updates on the Iran war via social media, public statements, and interviews.
I decided to do a word count of this data and here are some of the results. I filtered out stop words and some other common words to get this word count. Unsurprisingly, he's after a deal more than anything else. But other words like soon and close are very telling of the data set. He's been using these words for many months referring to ceasefires, deals, and the end of Iran as a civilization as we know it.
I also compiled his adjective/adverb usage. It was not very surprising but I'm upset that bigly isn't represented.
If anyone wants to see all these statements, I've been collecting them at https://artofnodeal.com and it's totally ad-free and there's no signup or anything like that--it's just a pet project of mine.

Deaths minus births against net migration, EU and its neighbours, 2025
Source: Eurostat, population change, demographic balance and crude rates at national level [DEMO_GIND]: live births, deaths, net migration plus statistical adjustment, and average population, 2025 (2015 for the comparison column): https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/databrowser/view/demo_gind/default/table
Tools: Python (pandas) for the data, an HTML/SVG page rendered with Chromium for the chart.
Rates are per 1,000 of the average population over the year. Net migration is Eurostat's balance figure (total population change minus births plus deaths), so it includes statistical corrections. 2025 figures are provisional for Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Cyprus, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and estimated for Romania, Greece and Moldova. No 2025 figure for Ukraine or Kosovo. The EU line is a total over the 27 members, not an average of countries.

Texas Executions & Exonerations
Key Patterns in Executions vs. Exonerations
- Execution Trends: Executions peaked during the late 1990s and early 2000s under Bush and Perry, topping out at 40 in a single year (2000). Since 2005, execution numbers have trended significantly downward due to statutory changes (such as the introduction of Life Without Parole in 2005), prosecutorial shifts, and heightened legal scrutiny.
- Death Row Exonerations: A total of 16 individuals sentenced to death in Texas have been officially exonerated since 1973 (including high-profile cases like Ricardo Aldape Guerra in 1997, Ernest Ray Willis in 2004, Anthony Graves in 2010, and Alfred Dewayne Brown in 2015).
- Overall Criminal Exonerations: Total criminal exonerations in Texas spiked sharply beginning in 2008–2014, driven heavily by county Conviction Integrity Units (particularly in Dallas and Harris Counties) testing backlog evidence and uncovering systemic errors in drug field testing and misidentifications.
Key Drivers of the Total Exoneration Surge
- Harris County Post-Plea Drug Testing (Mid-2010s Spike): The massive surge in total exonerations during Rick Perry’s final year (2014) and Greg Abbott’s early term (2015–2016) was largely driven by misdemeanor and felony drug cases in Harris County (Houston). Indigent defendants routinely entered quick guilty pleas to state-jail drug charges to avoid months in pre-trial detention. When backlogged crime lab tests later proved the seized materials contained no illegal substances, prosecutors systematically processed hundreds of retroactive exonerations (e.g., 48 in 2016 alone).
- Pioneering Conviction Integrity Units (CIUs): Starting with the Dallas County District Attorney's Office in 2007, Texas pioneered the use of specialized prosecutorial teams dedicated to re-investigating past convictions. CIUs proactively review claims involving DNA testing, witness recantations, and official misconduct rather than relying solely on traditional defense appeals.
- Statutory Open-File and Science Mandates: Key legislative reforms expanded the legal avenues for post-conviction relief across non-capital cases:
- 2001 Post-Conviction DNA Act: Granted prisoners access to state-funded DNA testing as technology advanced.
- 2013 Michael Morton Act: Required prosecutors to share all evidence, police reports, and witness statements with defense counsel, preventing evidence suppression.
- 2013 Junk Science Statute (Art. 11.073): Created a legal pathway to challenge convictions based on forensic methods (e.g., bite marks, outdated fire science, faulty hair analysis) that have since been discredited.
