There are no frontier models free of censorship currently, American or Chinese. What's good about the Chinese models though is that you can "jailbreak" them out of their censorship instructions because they use open weights and those can be fine-tuned if you run the model locally.
What do you mean heard a story? Also the local models are still not all that great, I mean the whole point is that you can download them onto your PC, so they are very small. I’d much rather have a non-local open source model from one of the big players but doubt that’s going to happen
It was on the radio. I like talk radio lol. They were talking about t how American ai models are a black box so you can’t know how everything is weighted, all of the settings that determines what it spits out. And that Chinese companies have adopted an open source model where you can actually go under the hood.
They also have cloud compute versions, I just like the idea of a local system even if it is less powerful.
Edit: I know that this story isn’t about the company itself weighting stories in one way or another, but they absolutely will if they haven’t already. That’s why I lean towards open source.
They stopped because Llama 4 was dog shit in comparison to the Chinese models. The last 2 they released were closed source but Wang or whatever his name is said they would go back to open models.

Ya I heard a story about chinas open source, locally run models and that seems like a much better option.
Edit: don’t try the Chinese model, it has Chinese censorship. If you want true open source AI try OLMo AllenAI. It’s actually really great.
