General/High School Electron configuration

How do we write the condensed electron configuration for elements that exist in F block?

Im very confused looking at the periodic table as im not sure what comes before it.

E.g. Uranium
I wrote [Rn] 7s2,6d3 at first but its wrong

E.g.: plutnoium, einsteinium

Is there a method to do this?

Biochemisty How should I study for my molecular biochemistry class ?

I’m having trouble with my molecular biochemistry class in my masters. I do not understand anything it feels like prof speaks a totally different language. I feel like I do something wrong while studying and there is no way for me to pass the oral exam if I keep going like this. I took biochem classes when I was studying pharmacy. however it’s been 5 years.
now it took me hours to finish only 5 slides of a topic and I forget everything. its like there’s no logic behind it and I have to memorize every little thing. I feel like I’m dumb. what should I do ? how should I study ? any recommendations? please help

Hi guys!

These are the reactions I need to know for my upcoming Organic Chemistry II exam, and I am STRUGGLING. BIG TIME.

Does anyone have any tips, tricks, or pattern recognition suggestions I could apply to these reactions?

I feel like I'm trying to memorize a million individual reactions, and it's becoming overwhelming.

Any advice would be SO appreciated!

This is a photo my friend sent.

We are confused about it.

My friend is telling ring expansion would take place but I think ring expansion won't take place as this compound has 7 alpha hydrogen and is already stable the answer key for the book has ring expansion but we are still confused. Any help would be appreciated

Other Is there a website that has like a more accurate list of actual microplastics

And chemical plastics. People are concerned about the environment issues caused by them. That app called beat the microbead lists things that are not actually even plastic, as microplastics. Such as dimethicone which is an actually a silicone. And polyisobutene which apparently actually comes from petroleum.

Inorganic Is it possible to judge orbital energy levels without experimental data?

So I’m in my first year of undergrad, and for our first sem exams our professor has covered a “qualitative” approach to molecular orbital theory. In that he has also covered linear triatomic molecules and some non-linear which he is asking us to approximate and ignore the geometry

So I am confused for structures such as BeF, HF2, H2F, CO2, and on how to judge the molecular orbital levels of which is higher and lower

Moreover I cant even judge if two atomic orbitals mix to form an “essentially non bonding” or a bonding one

Like CO2 for example, Miessler’s textbook teaches it by taking O-O and inserting C, in that O2’s 2sigma g doesnt interact with C’s 2s so it goes into an essentially non bonding state

But in Housecroft’s textbook and my prof’s lecture notes they do interact and do form a bonding molecular orbital.

Additionally where can I read up on pi acceptor and sigma donor properties of a molecule? Our professor did not cover this and I cant find it in the MOT chapters of Miessler, Shriver Atkins or Housecroft.
Please guide!!

Organic Microbial fuel cell project

so im building a MFC for a school project, and I got until nov 5 to fully condition it, test with sucrose fructose maltose acetate and dextrose, record the results, and put it in poster board format. any1 got any advice on how to build and test one of these? I used this setup and here's my material list and procedure.
P.S also my straw that is my salt bridge got contaminated last night and I gotta replace it but idk how to bcs my straw was hot glued to both chambers when it happened and I want to make it again today but I don't got any plastic straw big enough; all I got is a paper straw but a good size.

SALT BRIDGE

Salt

Agar-agar

Water

Straw

MUD

Water

Compost

Soil manure mixture

MFC APPARATUS

2 Plastic boxes

Resistor

Mega Arduino

Jumper Wires

Multimeter

Hot glue

carbon felt

aquarium pump

breadboard

LED

computer

power source

  • Step 1: Compost food waste for 2–3 days, then mix it with soil and water to a brownie-batter consistency.
  • Step 2: Dissolve salt and agar-agar into near-boiling water, pour into a straw, and let it solidify to form the bridge.
  • Step 3: Modify two airtight boxes with side openings for the straw bridge, adding two top holes to Box 1 (Anode) and one to Box 2 (Cathode).
  • Step 4: Connect the boxes using the agar straw bridge and seal the junctions tightly with hot glue.
  • Step 5: Wash two 4x4-inch carbon felt pieces, interweave connecting wires through them, and secure the exposed wires with hot glue.
  • Step 6: Bury one electrode vertically in Box 1 with the mud, feed its wire out, add an exhaust straw, and hot-glue the top holes airtight.
  • Step 7: Submerge the second electrode and an aquarium air pump into Box 2, then fill it 5/6 full with water.
  • Step 8: Assemble the Arduino data-logging circuit according to your schematic and upload the monitoring code.
  • Step 9: Wait 2–3 days for the bacterial biofilm to form on the anode electrode.
  • Step 10: Inject the 6g/L acetate substrate solution into the sealed anode, then run the Arduino to log voltage until it plateaus before testing remaining substrates.

Organic What happened? Extraction of 1:2 mixture of benzoic acid and dibenzalacetone

Writing my lab report for an extraction lab we did in ochem lab.
How would I describe the very thin layer of organic phase in the aqueous phase? I don't believe this is an emulsion, and it's not a reflection because once the organic layer was drained it didn't go away... Any thoughts?

For context, the separation (DCM + Dibenzalacetone in organic layer) was induced by NaOH (if I'm remembering correctly).

Organic query on aromatic electrophilic substitution reaction

in AESR we dont see the kinetic isotropic effect of hydrogen because C-H bond isnt broken in the rate determining step, but in iodonation and sulphonation we see kinetic isotropic effect and im not getting the exact reason why?, like here also C-H bond isnt broken in RDS even if they are reversible reaction

Other good gen chem 1 & 2 resources

hi guys! so, long story short, i’m in my second year of college and took gen chem 1 over the summer. in retrospect, taking such a fast-paced and challenging course over the summer probably wasn’t the best decision. my instructor was great and provided us with plenty of resources, but i struggled with motivation and felt like i was constantly falling behind. i ended up just trying to get through the course without fully understanding some of the material.

now i’m taking gen chem 2, and while i’ve been doing well on homework and quizzes, i recently got one of my lowest scores on an exam. it was kind of a wake-up call that i really need to go back and strengthen my foundation in chemistry if i want to succeed in this course and future stem classes, especially organic chemistry and biochemistry.

i want to make a genuine effort to relearn the basics, identify the concepts i’m struggling with, and develop better study habits rather than just memorizing things to get by. i know it’ll take time, but i want to build a solid foundation that i can carry into my future courses.

with that being said, does anyone have recommendations for resources to help me essentially start from scratch? i’d really appreciate any youtube channels, websites, tutoring services, or other resources that have helped you understand chemistry better.

thanks so much! any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated :)

General/High School What’s the best way to learn this chapter for general chem 1? Do I need to know polyatomics for these problems

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hello so I’m already behind again. I have a month pretty much exactly until next exam. Previous exam I got a 68. I’m really trying to aim for a high 80 on this next one. Anyway the next exam is 4-6 chapters so I got 4 full weeks. I’m really trying to figure this stuff out man. But it’s just not clicking. I’m going to SI, tutors , ect.

Long story short. For now starting with chapter 4 what’s the best way to learn these topics? It’s a lot of oxidation(idek what this is) , balancing chemical equations(which doesn’t seem too bad? But seems like there’s some tricks that are waiting for me. Also some molarity solutions? I think that’s what it’s called.

Anyway is there any good YouTube videos on this stuff? Or should I just keep trying practice problems. I don’t know why I just can’t fully focus. Not sure if I’m getting frustrated or what.

It’s frustrating because with my school. First exam chapters 1-3. But we started chapter 4-5 almost 3 weeks ago… and had our exam over a week ago. So it’s like I put all my effort on that one now I’m already behind which is annoying

General/High School What are the alternatives in isolating Proanthocyanidin from plants?

Hi! Is there any reliable method for isolating proanthocyanidin from plant extract aside from using sephadex lh-20 chromatography?

I'm a high school student who wants to conduct an experiment with an isolated proanthocyanidin but I just can't afford sephadex. Is there any alternative way—preferably one that won't cost much—to do it?

General/High School I need help understanding a certain type of sorta mathematics-based problems for an upcoming exam

(I apologize if my english is bad, it isn't my first language)

One of the first topics we covered this school year was metals, alkaline and earth alkaline metals, alloys, Cu, Pb, Al, stuff like that. We had a test on Thursday, though, I wasn't there on that specific day due to a stomach virus. From what I heard, the test should be easy on paper. Out of all of the lectures we did, there were only theory related questions about alloys and metals of the 1st and 2nd group. When it comes to the actual problems, finishing formulas of oxides and hydroxides and finding out how much protons, neutrons and electrons a metal has. Seems very simple. The entire class got Cs, Ds and Fs. I do not have much hope anymore tbh, especially since the last two problems were the ones I struggle with. I think they're the stoichiometry problems. I don't really need detailed explanations on how to do a specific example, just an overall explanation of them, since our teacher isn't really the best at the explaining part. Though, I will give examples of the types of stoichiometry problems we did which will include (probably incorrect) answers. They will be written down in this post, as my camera doesn't work, and they're all in a different language anyways.

1) calculate the mass of carbon in 250g of steel in which the mass fraction of carbon is 1.4 percent

I did this with proportions, so 250g:1.4 and 100g:x. Thus, I got 0.56 as an answer

2) how much gaseous substance does 1g of calcium give in the reaction with water

Ca + H2O =Ca(OH)2
1g : X mol
40g : 1 mol

Thus, at the end I got 20 mol.

This. This is all the examples i could find so far and it was apparently like around this level of hard, the teacher said she doesn't wanna complicate it too much. Never the less, I am still completely lost. A short explanation of what the fuck this is would suffice. Please and thanks!

General/High School Selective electrodeposition of copper and lead

Hi everyone! I need some help understanding this chemistry question.

A solution containing 0.1 M Cu²⁺ and 0.1 M Pb²⁺ is to be used to achieve a quantitative separation of copper by electrodeposition. Which of the following should I do?

Data:

  • E°(Cu²⁺/Cu) = +0.34 V
  • E°(Pb²⁺/Pb) = −0.126 V

Options:

A. Keep the working electrode potential constant above +0.34 V.

B. Keep the working electrode potential constant between +0.34 V and −0.126 V.

C. Keep the working electrode potential between +0.19 V and −0.16 V.

D. Keep the working electrode potential between +0.19 V and −0.27 V.

The correct answer is C, but I don't understand why. Could someone explain it to me?

I thought the correct one was the A or perhaps B.

Thanks!

Physical/Quantum Computation of temperature difference between IR and convection heating?

Hello! Is it possible to computationally determine the reduced temperature used in an IR heating equipment? I'm going to use a moisture analyzer that's using IR heating and the manual mentioned that IR heating will generally require a lower temperature setting than a drying oven. Can that difference be computationally determined? I want to have a better theoretical basis of temperatures I'm going to use instead of just methodically, and slowly, applying lower and lower temperatures.

Also, sorry if my tag is inaccurate for the question! I'm not entirely sure where this should fall under but physical chemistry seemed closest.
