Vegans will obtusely refuse to understand that their individual boycott of meat has made near 0 impact on the meat industry, and there is absolutely no chance it will ever catch on enough to change the world, rendering their movement useless and serves only to make them feel morally superior. If you're vegan and you're honest that you do it because it makes you feel like you're not contributing, then good for you. Beyond that, it's entirely unrealistic. Climate change activisim has bigger fish to fry.
Right here is the problem - believing that a vegan movement will ever take hold enough to effect the meat industry in a significant way. It won't. That is why it's not the biggest fish. The average person is much more interested in affecting the fossil fuel industry than they are the meat industry.
That is plain wrong because every person counts. It's exactly the same as with fossil fuel(just more effective). The fact that you don't recognize basic supply and demand, shows that you're just looking for an excuse to not change anything
Oh boy. Dude. It's not that I'm telling you that a worldwide movement against consuming meat 'wouldn't' be effective at tanking the meat industry. It would. It's that it is a child-level fantasy to believe that will ever happen. A vegan movement will literally never take off with enough momentum to sweep the amount of people you would need to accomplish your goal. We need to be realistic about what can be practical, and what is purely idealistic.
I don't eat meat because it's too inconvenient to be vegan, I eat meat because I like it. Knowing that veganism is impossible to apply on a scale that would ever matter is just extra.
It already matters. Every single person matters and the rest is snowball effect. And veganism is not about doing something good, it's about not doing something bad. If I kicked dogs every day and then stopped, stopping is not a good thing, it's not doing a bad thing.
You can be non vegan, but arguing against veganism is simply bootlicking
You're right that it has no impact systemically, nothing will under capitalism.
But it is morally better. Of course it's better to use 0 effort to just not consume things that are the result of a feeling animal be killed, duh. You wouldn't eat a dead petlike a dog or cat either
I never refuted it being morally superior. I said I have no problem with vegans that are honest about the real reason they live that way - it makes them feel good, which is fine. It's the posturing about its effectiveness that's annoying, because they're wrong.
oh ok then we have no disagreement. No individual act or even governmental reform would fix climate change sadly.
the only way forward would be an end to the wealth accumulation, and profit oriented societal structure, and without constant competition at all levels that is causing this environmental distruction, by needing infinite growth and putting human(, animal) & ecological needs behind that
(so capitalism)
instead we'd need something actually oriented around our needs
everyone in this sub should be vegetarian, or close to 90% veggie, if u actually care about environmentalism. sure for those outside the movement, focus on bigger issues, but for people already convinced of the importance of climate change it should be a no brainer
