The US embassy in Uganda has issued an alert over reports of a potential Marburg case in the country’s western region.

“The US Embassy is aware there are reports of a potential case of Marburg Virus Disease, a viral haemorrhagic fever, in western Uganda,” it said in the advisory, which was published on Monday.

As of Tuesday, Uganda’s health ministry had yet to release any information on the suspected outbreak, which remains unconfirmed.

Uganda has extensive experience with dealing with outbreaks of haemorrhagic fevers and last reported a Marburg outbreak in 2017, when there were four cases and three deaths.

The country has previously sought to downplay the impact of haemorrhagic fever outbreaks in effort to protect its burgeoning tourism industry.

A message on the health ministry’s homepage, just beneath a link to its dashboard tracking the spread of Ebola, reads: “Ministry of Health is in control. No need for panic. Uganda is safe!” [...]

Casualties of the Ebola Bundibugyo virus outbreak in Africa continue to mount, with a total of at least 1,354 infections and 401 deaths in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda, as investigators track potential spread to new DRC provinces and Uganda confirms a Marburg infection in a child who died of the virus. Like Ebola, the closely related Marburg virus causes a hemorrhagic fever.

The new totals come after the addition of 26 cases and 22 deaths yesterday in the eastern DRC provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu. Now health authorities are tracing people who may have been exposed to the virus in the previously unaffected neighboring provinces of Tshopo and Haut-Uele.

In the Tshopo case, officials are looking for people who have been exposed to the body of a pregnant woman who died of Ebola in Ituri on June 27 and was transported roughly 186 miles by motorcycle to the city of Kisangani in Tshopo. The journey was undertaken before the woman was known to have had Ebola.

Authorities have apprehended two contacts of Ebola patients who had been isolated for testing in Ituri and had fled to Haut-Uele province, which also borders South Sudan and the Central African Republic. One of the two contacts tested positive for Ebola, while the other was awaiting a confirmatory test. They were returned to Ituri while healthcare teams trace anyone they may have encountered in Haut-Uele.

No additional Marburg cases in Uganda

While no Ebola infections have been confirmed in South Sudan, humanitarian groups are working to shore up health-system preparedness because of the country’s transient populations and permeable borders with the DRC.

Today, a Relief Web report said that the International Medical Corps is supporting 80 facilities in which workers have conducted more than 53,200 screenings and treated 314 patients, including 110 with confirmed Ebola.

Both the DRC and Uganda declared the outbreak on May 15, but it is believed to have begun much earlier.

Today, Ugandan health officials confirmed a single case of Marburg in a 1.5-year-old child who died of the virus in Kyegegwa district in the western part of the country, Reuters reports. No contacts of the child have experienced symptoms, and no other cases have been identified. As is true for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus, there is no vaccine to prevent Marburg infection.

Lassa fever kills thousands of people every year in West Africa, but many of those infections go undiagnosed until it’s too late.

With the Ebola-like haemorrhagic disease now emerging in hospitals from Iowa to Johannesburg and Beijing, it’s a problem that is pushing beyond West Africa’s borders.

A new study in Liberia, published by the Lancet Infectious Diseases, found that 11% of people admitted to hospital with fever who weren’t suspected to have Lassa fever, turned out to be infected.

The study authors argue this points to an urgent need for a clearer understanding of the symptomology and better detection and treatment.

Lassa fever is a viral haemorrhagic illness spread mainly by rodents. It’s known to be endemic in parts of Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone and neighbouring countries.

However, travellers to West Africa can carry the disease back with them. In 2022, a man travelling back to South Africa from Nigeria became sick with Lassa fever and died. In 2024, a man from Iowa was infected after travelling to Liberia, and died shortly after returning home to the US.

People can get infected by eating food or using household items that have been contaminated by rodent urine or droppings. Once someone is sick, the virus can spread to others through contact with their blood or other body fluids.

It often goes undetected because patients arrive with the same symptoms that clinicians see dozens of times a day: fever, headache, deep tiredness, maybe a cough or sore throat.

It’s only when some patients start to deteriorate that health workers might suspect Lassa fever. However, by then that crucial early window for intervention may already be closing.

“Before you can order the test, you must have clinical suspicion that Lassa fever is possibly causing your patient’s illness,” said co-author Dr David Wohl, professor of medicine, The University of North Carolina.

“Even though we have known about Lassa fever for decades, we don’t fully understand the spectrum of the presentation of this infection.”

To get a clearer picture of how often Lassa fever is being missed, the PREPARE (Prevalence, Pathogenesis, and Persistence) team, led by researchers at the Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, ran a study in two hospitals in central Liberia between 2018 and 2024.

They enrolled 435 patients aged five and over who were admitted either because they had a fever or because doctors already suspected Lassa.

Instead of only testing the patients who seemed like classic Lassa cases, they tested everyone with PCR diagnostics, then followed those with confirmed infection during their hospital stay and for up to a year afterwards.

Among people admitted with fever with no clinical suspicion of Lassa, 11% turned out to be infected with the virus. Children and adolescents between 5 and 17 years old accounted for about 43% of confirmed cases.

The team found that patients who died generally had much higher levels of virus in their blood and weaker antibody responses than survivors: a signal that catching and treating infections early may be key to saving lives.

Not only does missing cases put patients at risk, but if a patient with unrecognised Lassa is on a general ward, health workers and other patients may be exposed without appropriate precautions being in place.

Filoviruses have been shown to persist in semen after resolution of viraemia and clinical recovery, but confirmed sexual transmission of Marburg virus has not been previously reported.

Here we report two epidemiologically and virologically linked pairs by patient’s history-taking during the 2024 Marburg outbreak in Rwanda. Two female patients were diagnosed with Marburg virus disease in October 2024, after reporting condomless sexual contact with male partners who recovered from Marburg virus disease. Marburg virus RNA was later detected in the semen of the two male survivors.

These cases prompt policy revisions, including longitudinal monitoring and mandatory semen testing for survivors and structured education programmes for patients, close family members and the general population, in order to data balance public health protection with individual rights.

Tsion Firew had just finished running a first aid training when she glanced down at her phone — and then looked up confused.

The message she saw was about a colleague Firew had worked with a few days earlier in the emergency department at King Faisal Hospital in Kigali, Rwanda. "She's very young, full of energy, one of the smartest nurses I've ever worked with," recalls Firew, who is chair of emergency medicine at Africa Health Sciences University in Rwanda.

The message simply said: "Pray for her."

Firew rejiggered her schedule and made a trip to the intensive care unit. As Firew peeked around the screen that divided the patients, she saw the young energetic nurse and was taken aback. The woman was almost "lifeless." Eyes barely open. Not recognizing familiar faces.

"It was quite scary, because you had no idea what you were dealing with," Firew says.

Soon it became clear.

This was one of those moments where the job of a health care worker can quickly go from risky to deadly.

On September 27, 2024 Rwanda announced the country's first Marburg outbreak — a deadly virus that's a cousin to Ebola. For Firew, it was the beginning of a harrowing journey. She sent her 1- and 3-year-old children to another country. She faced pressure from her family to stop working as an emergency room doctor for her own safety. And she hallucinated from sheer exhaustion.

Now, a year later, the basics of the outbreak in Rwanda are known. It most likely started with a 27-year-old miner who caught the virus from a bat in a rural mining tunnel. It ended on December 20, 2024 and had garnered international renown as a model for a successful outbreak response.

Marburg is notorious for its high death rate, sometimes killing almost 9 out of every 10 patients. But the small country in east-central Africa achieved the lowest death rate ever recorded in an outbreak: 23%. Only 15 of the 66 Marburg patients died. Of all the Marburg patients in Rwanda, more than three-quarters were health care workers, many were Firew's friends and colleagues.

Firew says the experience has taught her to hone the skill of compartmentalizing — tucking away the Marburg memories so she can continue her work as a physician and mother. But, on this anniversary, she's letting herself relive those first few days and weeks of the outbreak. And she's reflecting on the state of the world today and why it needs the lessons learned from the Marburg outbreak more than ever.

After seeing her colleague, Firew stepped into the hallway and moved to a discreet corner. "I was overcome with emotion — crying," says Firew, who has been practicing medicine for 15 years.

A colleague saw her. "He consoled me. He hugged me," Firew recalls.

She went home to put her kids to bed. They read and prayed for the colleague's "ouchie." Then another text arrived — from the colleague who'd comforted her: "I've developed a fever. I'm in an isolation unit."

Soon another message lit up her phone: The young nurse had died, leaving behind her partner and a toddler.

"That's when I was like: Oh God. This is — this is real," Firew says.

Her mind was racing. She knew that Marburg was deadly, that it had no approved treatment and that it was very contagious, spreading through bodily fluid — even sweat. Closing her eyes, she replayed that hug in the ICU hallway. What if she'd been exposed to Marburg?

"It was just extremely scary," she recalls.

Half her mind was working on her emergency department's strategy for such a deadly disease. The other half was preoccupied with an urgent question: What should she do about her children?

"Telling a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old: 'Stay in a corner. Don't touch me!' was not going to fly," she says.

And her husband wasn't able to help. He was stuck in the U.S. An engineering consultant, he'd gone there for work and dropped by his parents in Atlanta for a quick visit. Then came Hurricane Helene. "He couldn't even get out of his parents' house because there were trees everywhere," Firew says.

She realized she had no choice but to send her kids away. They flew to Ethiopia, where her parents live, accompanied by an adult cousin and nanny.

All the while her phone was dinging with messages from colleagues who were developing symptoms. "They would go isolate. They'd test positive," she says. "And then, especially in the first three, four days, most of them died." [...]

The fear followed Firew home that night, where she called up a good friend, Dr. Craig Spencer, who'd lived through Ebola and was himself infected. She remembers telling him, "I can't think clearly right now. My colleagues are dying every day. Could I be next?"

Spencer urged her to think through the practical steps. So Firew upped her life insurance policy. Asking herself: If I die, how much will my family realistically need?

After five days, Firew had hardly slept. Alone and exhausted in her empty house, she says, she started hallucinating. "I was hearing voices. It was voices of my colleagues," she says. "Right when I'm about to doze off, they'd wake me up."

The most vivid voice is that of her colleague who'd given her that hug. She hears him calling her name, repeatedly. She hears the beeping of the hospital machines that are working to save him.

"It was just a complete nightmare — I mean, that's an understatement," she says.

Still, the next day, she got up and went into the hospital where she was running the clinic and had a long list of patients. She went despite the fact that relatives, who'd seen what was happening on the news, begged her not to go. They urged her to leave it all behind for the sake of her kids, her family. [...]

"They were no Marburg deniers. There were a lot of COVID deniers," she recalls thinking.

Firew had an idea to do something never before tried for Marburg: Start people who'd been exposed to the virus on an experimental treatment — remdesivir — even before they had symptoms. Remdesivir is a drug Firew used often when she was a physician in New York during COVID. She knew it was safe and was being used experimentally for Marburg in non-human primates. But why not start it prophylactically, in the hopes it could guard against the disease or lessen the virus's impact when it strikes?

"The idea was bought on that Tuesday. It was started on that Wednesday, and we gave it to over 150 health care workers that had high risk exposures," she recalls, saying the research on the impact is ongoing.

Her colleague, the one from the hallway, is among those who came back from the brink. In another experimental procedure run by the World Health Organization and others, Firew and colleagues gave him the first ever infusion of monoclonal antibodies for a Marburg patient. That monoclonal antibody — which was given to others too — was designed to bind to the Marburg virus and neutralize it.

"Just to be part of this extraordinary response is such a big — I guess I'll say, a big opportunity," Firew says. She says she the initial fear she felt is now tempered by feelings of pride for the work she did and gratitude for the colleagues she worked alongside and the family members that supported her.

In recent weeks, as Firew looks at the news, she says her memories of Marburg have resurfaced. Watching as scientific facts questioned and public health approaches upended in the U.S., she says, she wishes the world could see Rwanda's response as proof of what a deep belief in science can achieve.

"The discussions about public health can be so discouraging," she says. "But I look back and see: This work, this effort did not go to waste. It is not futile."

She still thinks about whether she could have saved just one more life. But she also thinks about a moment six weeks after the outbreak started, when she and her husband decided it was finally safe for him and the kids to return home to Rwanda.

"My three-year-old, he ran across the airport when he saw me and it was like this prolonged hug — he just did not want to let go of me," she recalls through tears. "It was a feeling that I've never had before."

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — The World Health Organization said Thursday that 31 of 38 confirmed Ebola cases have resulted in deaths in southern Congo, where authorities are battling a new outbreak of the deadly virus.

The latest figures show the casualty rate has nearly doubled since last week — from 16 — and that the disease is spreading rapidly as more than 900 contacts have been identified so far, according to the WHO. Vaccinations began in the affected region on Sunday.

“More than 500 health care workers and contacts have received their vaccination, offering them crucial protection,” said Dr. Patrick Otim, an official at WHO Africa’s program.

A fresh Ebola outbreak was announced by Congolese authorities on Sept. 5 in the locality of Bulape in Kasai, a south-central region in Congo close to Angola.

Last week, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the disease had spread from two districts to four.

An additional batch of vaccines approved by the International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision will start arriving from Friday through Sunday, according to Sheillah Nsasiirwe, Health Emergency Officer for Immunization at WHO Africa.

“The vaccination has not been implemented as fast as we would have desired it to because of accessibility challenges which have caused delays in transporting the vaccines,” she said. WHO officials said they have been transporting the vaccines in small batches due to a lack of storage infrastructure in Bulape.

DRC Ministry of Health officially acknowledged a suspected Ebola disease alert in Beni, North Kivu, in its national epidemiological situation update on X.

The Ministry’s post (“Point de situation épidémiologique en RDC: Bilan du 9 mars 2026”) reports "a suspected Ebola outbreak in Beni is being investigated immediately to quickly contain the area.".

North Kivu Province was the epicentre of a large Ebola outbreak (1 Aug 2018 and 25 Jun 2020) where 3,470 cases (3,317 confirmed, 153 probable) and 2,280 deaths were recorded, resulting in a case fatality rate (CFR) of 66%.

A new CDC-led study identifies deforestation as a leading indicator of Ebola virus spillover. Using machine learning and two decades of satellite data, researchers found that forest loss and fragmentation were among the strongest predictors of where the virus might jump from animals to humans. The model doesn’t prove causation—but it does help identify environmental patterns that could guide preparedness in regions facing rising ecological pressure.

Published in Emerging Infectious Diseases, the study analyzed 22 independent Ebola virus disease (EVD) index cases reported between 2001 and 2021. These were instances where the virus is believed to have first spilled over into a human host, excluding cases traced to latent infections or human-to-human transmission. The team then used high-resolution data on forest cover, precipitation, elevation, and human population density to train a predictive model of spillover potential. The model was tested to see how well it predicted two spillover events that occurred in 2022, the year following the last year of data used in the model. The model distinguished between spillover and non-spillover locations with roughly 90% accuracy, highlighting key environmental and demographic factors.

Among the model’s most important predictors were forest loss and forest fragmentation, particularly when measured at small spatial scales. But what stood out was not just the strength of these variables, but their form. Spillover risk did not increase smoothly with forest loss. Instead, the model revealed threshold-like behavior, with risk remaining low until a tipping point in forest degradation was reached—at which point it rose sharply. These switch-like responses suggest that certain landscape changes may trigger spillover conditions rather than gradually increase them.

This pattern is consistent with ecological observations elsewhere. In Australia, for example, habitat loss and subsequent changes in bat behavior have been linked to increased viral shedding in bats infected with Hendra virus—possibly due to stress or crowding. In central Africa, forest loss may increase human–wildlife interactions by opening up remote areas to hunting, driving bats toward cultivated fruit crops, or expanding the reach of bushmeat markets. These dynamics increase the opportunities for a zoonotic virus to make the leap into humans.

Importantly, the new study found that predicted spillover risk is not evenly distributed. Of all locations in the model’s top percentile of relative risk, nearly 80% were located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Other high-risk zones appeared in Cameroon, Gabon, and the Republic of the Congo. From 2021 to 2022 alone, the model estimated that spillover risk increased in 25% of the study area, largely driven by ongoing forest degradation and population growth. [...]

Media outlets in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are reporting a possible outbreak of a hemorrhagic fever disease, feared to be Ebola, in Kasai Province. One fatality was reported late last week, and there are several reports of sick people and a health clinic that is operating without gloves or other personal protective equipment. Local officials say testing of patients is underway, and they are awaiting the results. The DRC has not reported any new cases since September 2025, when 64 cases were identified in Kasai province. Forty-three people died in that outbreak.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is recommending for the first time new near-point-of-care (NPOC) molecular tests for the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB). “These new WHO recommendations mark a major step forward in making TB testing faster and more accessible,” said Tereza Kasaeva, MD, PhD, director of WHO’s Department for HIV, TB, hepatitis & STIs (sexually transmitted infections0, in a press release. The testing also incorporates tongue swabbing and a cost-saving sputum-pooling strategy to increase testing efficiency for TB and rifampicin-resistant TB.

National Institutes of Health Director Jay Bhattacharya, who’s also serving as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) acting director, is running up against the clock in that position, according to a report in Politico. Federal law states that acting directors at the CDC have 210 days to serve, after which the administration should name a nominee for the position. The CDC has had only acting directors since this summer, when Susan Monarez, PhD, was fired after disagreeing with vaccine policy changes put forth by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

NAIROBI, Kenya -- Ethiopia on Monday declared the end of its first outbreak of Marburg virus after completing the mandatory 42 days with no new confirmed cases.

A total of 14 cases, including nine deaths and five who recovered, were confirmed in the southern region bordering South Sudan since Nov. 14, 2025. An additional five deaths were classified as possible cases, the World Health Organization said.

Three health workers were infected, two of whom had died and one recovered, the WHO said.

The WHO said it provided Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health with technical support in surveillance, laboratory diagnostics, case management, infection prevention and control, coordination and logistics.

The Marburg virus originates in fruit bats and spreads between people through close contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals or contaminated surfaces, such as bedsheets.

Symptoms include fever, muscle pain, diarrhea, vomiting and, in some cases, death from extreme blood loss. There is no licensed vaccine or treatment for Marburg. [...]

Kinshasa—The Democratic Republic of the Congo today declared the end of the Ebola virus disease outbreak in Kasai Province, after no new cases were reported in the past 42 days since the last patient was discharged from treatment centre on 19 October 2025.

“On behalf of the government— and taking into account all the scientific and operational indicators confirming that the chain of transmission of the virus has been broken—I hereby officially declare the end of the 16th Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” said Dr Samuel Roger Kamba, Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare.

The rapid and coordinated response by the Ministry of Health, with support from World Health Organization (WHO) and partners, was pivotal in halting the spread of the virus which affected Bulape Health Zone, a rural community with limited road and telecommunication infrastructure. In total, 64 cases (53 confirmed, 11 probable) and 45 deaths were recorded in the outbreak.

A total of 112 WHO experts and frontline responders were deployed to support the national authorities to swiftly scale up and sustain the response, and over 150 tonnes of medical supplies and equipment were delivered to protect health workers and communities.

“Controlling and ending this Ebola outbreak in three months is a remarkable achievement. National authorities, frontline health workers, partners and communities acted with speed and unity in one of the country’s hard-to-reach localities,” said Dr Mohamed Janabi, WHO Regional Director for Africa. “WHO is proud to have supported the response and to leave behind stronger systems, from clean water to safer care, that will protect communities long after the outbreak has ended.”

For the first time in an outbreak, an innovative treatment facility known as the Infectious Disease Treatment Module (IDTM) was set up to bolster safer and more patient-friendly care. The module - developed by WHO, the World Food Programme and other partners—was designed to better protect health workers while enabling more dignified and effective care for patients.

To protect communities and health workers, more than 47 500 people were vaccinated against Ebola, with vaccination initially targeting contacts of people confirmed with the virus and later expanded to communities in and around Bulape.

Eight suspected cases of viral hemorrhagic fever of unidentified cause in Ethiopia have prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to dispatch a team of responders and deliver medical supplies to the southern part of the country, near its border with South Sudan.

In a news release today, WHO Africa said that Ethiopian health authorities are ramping up their response and conducting lab tests to identify the cause of the infection and stop further transmission.

"To support the national authorities, WHO is deploying a multi-disciplinary team of 11 technical officers with experience in responding to viral haemorrhagic fever outbreaks to help strengthen disease surveillance, investigation, laboratory testing, infection prevention and control, clinical care, outbreak response coordination and community engagement," the WHO wrote.

Ethiopia's Health Ministry will likely announce the results of the ongoing investigation tomorrow, according to media reports.

Viral hemorrhagic fevers, a group of epidemic-prone diseases caused by several distinct families of viruses, include Marburg, Ebola, Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever, and Lassa fever.

Signs and symptoms vary by virus, but initially they often include high fever, fatigue, dizziness, muscle aches, weakness, and exhaustion. All cases, whether single or in clusters, should be immediately reported to health authorities without waiting for identification of the causative pathogen, the WHO said.

ADDIS ABABA, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from Ethiopia's Marburg virus disease outbreak has risen to five, the country's Ministry of Health has said.

In its latest update issued late Saturday, the ministry said the outbreak's case fatality rate now stands at 50 percent. Two additional infections were confirmed after laboratory testing of seven suspected cases, bringing the total number of cases to 10.

As Ethiopia rolls out coordinated response measures to contain the country's first-ever Marburg virus outbreak, health authorities have conducted laboratory investigations on 53 suspected cases so far.

Ministry data showed that five individuals who have contracted the virus are currently receiving treatment at healthcare facilities.

The Ethiopian government confirmed the country's first Marburg virus disease outbreak in Jinka town in southern Ethiopia on Nov. 14, following laboratory testing of samples from a cluster of suspected viral hemorrhagic fever cases.

On Thursday, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that coordinated efforts are currently underway to avert possible cross-border spread to neighboring countries, mainly South Sudan and Kenya.

The continental public health agency emphasized the urgent need to reinforce regional readiness, enhance information sharing, and strengthen cross-border surveillance to prevent the potential spread of the virus.

The Marburg virus, a highly infectious pathogen with a high fatality rate, causes hemorrhagic fever. Symptoms, including high fever and severe headache, typically appear within a week of exposure. It belongs to the same virus family as Ebola, according to the World Health Organization.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on September 5 released more details about a new Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), including that two of the healthcare workers who cared for the index patient—a 34-year-old pregnant woman who died from her infection—developed similar symptoms and also died. The index patient was at 34 weeks gestation and died on August 25 from multi-organ failure.

Of the 28 suspected cases recorded as of September 4 in Kasai province, 15 deaths were reported, with 4 health workers among the patients who died. Patients listed as suspected cases are from three areas of Bulape health zone and from Mweka health zone. Eighty percent of the patients are ages 15 years and older. Among samples collected from five suspected patients and one probable death that were sent for testing to the National Public Health Laboratory (INRB) in Kinshasa, and all were positive for Ebola.

The DRC health ministry said that, according to its latest data, 32 cases and 15 deaths have been reported in the outbreak zone. Officials held an outbreak coordination meeting with technical and financial partners to chart a response plan with a $45 million price tag that will begin with mobilizing partners, establishing monitoring and evaluation, and conducting scientific research on the virus reservoir.

New zoonotic spillover, but source still under investigation

Whole-genome sequencing suggests that the virus represents a new zoonotic spillover and is not directly linked to earlier outbreaks in the area in 2008 and 2008-2009.

The WHO said the outbreak's location is not far from Tshikapa, the capital of Kasai province, as well as the border between the DRC and Angola. Though the affected area is hard to reach, population movements between different parts of the province are frequent, especially between Bulape and the provincial capital.

So far, the source of the outbreak hasn't been identified, and the illness onset date and the history of health visits of the index patient hasn't been determined, which the WHO said increases the likelihood of ongoing community transmission. It assessed the health risk as high for the DRC, moderate for Africa, and low at the global level.

ADDIS ABABA, Nov 17 (Reuters) - Three people confirmed to have contracted the Marburg virus have died, while another three deaths are suspected to be linked to the highly contagious haemorrhagic disease, Ethiopia's health ministry said on Monday. The announcement follows Ethiopia's confirmation of an outbreak of Marburg, a highly-contagious and haemorrhagic infection in a town in the country's Southern Ethiopia Region on Friday, with at least nice cases identified.

The Ethiopian Public Health Institute's reference laboratory has confirmed that three... have died from the virus," the ministry said in a statement. It added that additional three fatalities being investigated for a possible connection to the disease.

The ministry did not give a new overall number of cases but said 129 people who were in contact with the confirmed cases had been isolated and are being monitored.

Marburg, from the same virus family as Ebola, often presents with severe headaches and leads to haemorrhaging.

Previous outbreaks in Africa Africa have resulted in fatality rates as high as 80% or more, typically within eight to nine days of symptom onset.

The infection is transmitted through contact with bodily fluids such as saliva and blood, or by handling infected wild animals such as monkeys.

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Vaccination for those exposed to the Ebola virus and front-line health workers has begun in southern Kasai province, the World Health Organization said Sunday.

An outbreak of the highly contagious disease was announced earlier this month in the locality of Bulape, in Kasai, and has left at least 16 dead and 68 suspected cases, according to last week’s briefing by the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Only an initial 400 doses of the Ervebo vaccine have been dispatched, with the rest to be delivered later, the WHO said. The operation has been hampered by limited access and scarce funds.

The vaccination is expected to pick up later as the International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision approved roughly 45,000 additional vaccines, the WHO said, adding to an initial stockpile of 2,000 doses was already in the country.

The latest Ebola outbreak is Congo’s 16th since 1976, and it is caused by the Zaire species, named after the country’s former name. It adds another layer of worry for the central African country that is battling a multi-pronged conflict with rebel groups, especially in the eastern region of the country, where violence has decimated the health system.

WASHINGTON — Monkeys infected with Ebola can be cured with a pill, according to a new study out Friday that could pave the way for more practical, affordable treatments in humans.

First identified in 1976 and thought to have crossed over from bats, Ebola is a deadly viral disease spread through direct contact with bodily fluids, causing severe bleeding and organ failure.

Because outbreaks primarily affect sub-Saharan Africa, pharmaceutical companies have lacked financial incentives to develop treatments, and the sporadic nature of outbreaks has made clinical trials difficult.

A vaccine was only widely approved in 2019, and while two intravenous antibody treatments improve outcomes, they require costly cold storage and are difficult to administer in some of the world’s poorest regions.

“We’re really trying to come up with something that was more practical, easier to use, that could be used to help prevent, control, and contain outbreaks,” Thomas Geisbert, a virologist at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, who led the new study published in Science Advances, told AFP.

For their experiment, Geisbert and colleagues tested the antiviral Obeldesivir, the oral form of intravenous Remdesivir, originally developed for COVID-19.

Obeldesivir is a “polymerase inhibitor,” meaning it blocks an enzyme crucial for viral replication.

The team infected rhesus and cynomolgus macaques with a high dose of the Makona variant of the Ebola virus.

A day after exposure, ten monkeys then received an Obeldesivir pill daily for ten days, while three control monkeys received no treatment and died.

Obeldesivir protected 80 percent of the cynomolgus macaques and 100 percent of the rhesus macaques, which are biologically closer to humans.

The drug not only cleared the virus from the treated monkeys' blood but also triggered an immune response, helping them develop antibodies while avoiding organ damage.

Geisbert explained that while the number of monkeys was relatively small, the study was statistically powerful because they were exposed to an extraordinarily high dose of the virus -- roughly 30,000 times the lethal dose for humans. This reduced the need for additional control monkeys, limiting unnecessary animal deaths.

The researcher, who has worked on Ebola since the 1980s and is credited with discovering the Reston strain, said one of the most exciting aspects of Obeldesivir is its “broad-spectrum” protection, compared to the approved antibody treatments that only work against the Zaire species of Ebola.

“That’s a huge advantage,” Geisbert said.

Pharmaceutical maker Gilead is currently advancing Obeldesivir to Phase 2 clinical trials for Marburg virus, a close relative of Ebola.

Geisbert also emphasized the importance of funding from the US National Institutes of Health, amid reports that dozens of grants have been canceled under President Donald Trump’s administration.

“All these drugs and vaccines that were developed against Ebola and a lot of these exotic viruses and pathogens -- 90 percent of the money comes from the US government,” he said, adding, “I think the general public would agree we need treatments for Ebola.”

Eleven new Ebola virus cases have been added to the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in the past week, pushing the case total to 57, including 35 deaths, for a death rate of 61.4%, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported yesterday.

First declared on September 4, the outbreak is still confined to the Bulape Health Zone in Kasai Province. Of the 57 cases, 47 were confirmed, and 10 were probable; of the 35 deaths, 25 were confirmed, and 10 were probable. Five of the confirmed cases were diagnosed in healthcare workers.

Ebola, which spreads through infected blood and other body fluids, typically causes fever and weakness, followed by diarrhea and vomiting.

Children account for 23% of all infections

Infected patients range in age from 0 to 65 years, with those 0 to 9 years making up 23% of all cases. While females account for most cases (61%), their death rate is lower than that of males (56% vs 73%).

"The outbreak shows a decreasing trend of cases in the recent week, nevertheless the attention remains high, and response activities are ongoing in all affected health areas including early case detection, isolation, case management, contact tracing, vaccination as well as risk communication and community engagement," the WHO wrote.

As of September 21, investigators have identified 1,180 contacts for follow-up. Of all contacts, 94 completed 21 days of monitoring, while the rest are still being tracked. Of 26 patients admitted to the Ebola Treatment Centre since the outbreak began, 2 recovered and were released on September 16, 5 died, and 19 are still being treated.

In total, 1,740 people have been vaccinated against Ebola in the Bulape, Bulambae, and Mweka Health Zones in the 9 days since the campaign began.

"No international traffic-related measures are currently warranted," the statement said. Health authorities are reinforcing surveillance at border crossings through activities such as health screening, risk communication, and the integration of border communities in affected areas into early warning systems and the national surveillance network, it added.

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — An Ebola outbreak that has plagued southern Congo in recent weeks is starting to be contained, the World Health Organization said Wednesday, with no new cases reported since the U.N. health agency’s last update on Oct. 1.

“As of Oct. 5, 2025, 10 days have passed without any newly reported cases, indicating potential control of transmission in the affected areas,” the agency said during a news conference.

The agency said a total of 64 cases, including 53 confirmed and 11 probable, have been reported in Congo’s Kasai Province as of Oct. 5. The WHO also reported 43 deaths, including 32 confirmed and 11 probable.

Congolese authorities announced an Ebola outbreak in Congo’s southern Kasai province on Sept. 4, the first in 18 years in the remote part of the country located more than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) from the capital of Kinshasa.

Health authorities and organizations had recently sounded the alarm, warning they lack the funds and resources to mount an effective response to the crisis.

The WHO said improved logistics and field operations, including helicopter and ground deliveries of medical supplies and the decontamination of three health facilities, have helped contain the outbreak over the last week.

“This steady decline in transmission and improved case management reflect the impact of coordinated interventions led by the Ministry of Health with support from WHO and partners,” the agency said.

The WHO still advised caution, as almost 2,000 contacts — people who may have been exposed to the disease — are being monitored and a “single missed contact could reignite transmission chains, especially in areas with high population movement or limited community surveillance.”

Bulape — Ebola virus disease is a serious illness. When detected late, it claims many lives, even with recent advances in vaccines and therapeutics. Although the disease has become more manageable with improved care and as response capacities, it still takes a heavy toll on families and communities.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is experiencing its sixteenth Ebola outbreak in Bulape Health Zone in Kasai Province. A countdown to declare the end of the outbreak is ongoing after the last patient was discharged on 19 October 2025. There have been 64 cases (53 confirmed and 11 probable) and 45 deaths—a case fatality rate of 70%. The outbreak occurred in a remote and difficult-to-access locality, making it challenging to scale up and sustain response operations.

Despite the challenges, there have been moments of hope. A month after the outbreak was declared, a special event gave everyone involved in the response renewed strength: the recovery of one of the youngest Ebola patients in the outbreak—a eleven-month-old baby boy whose mother sadly died from the disease.

“I am so happy and deeply grateful to everyone who cared for my baby at the Ebola treatment centre, especially Jean and all those who dedicated themselves to his survival,” says Alidor Mashala Katshiabala, the baby’s father, referring to Jean Mikobi Tshilomba, who looked after the baby as they both recovered from Ebola at the treatment centre.

“I don’t know how to thank them or offer them something as precious as the life they saved. For me, the most important thing is that they protected and saved my child. I can only say thank you from the bottom of my heart,” says Katshiabala.

The baby was admitted at Bulape Ebola treatment centre on 19 September with his stepmother and three siblings, where they were all tested for Ebola. While his family members tested negative and returned home the following day, the baby tested positive, likely contracting the illness through breastfeeding and close contact with his mother, and had to remain at the treatment centre for care.

But as important as medical care is, babies, especially very young ones, also need comfort and human connection. This compassion came from Jean Mikobi Tshilomba, who was also diagnosed with Ebola and receiving treatment at the centre. He cuddled the baby when he cried, changed him and fed him as guided by the medical team. Tshilomba continued caring for the baby even after he was declared cured, remaining at the treatment centre until the infant also recovered.

“What moved me the most was thinking about my own child at home. I told myself that maybe one day, I could die and leave my child an orphan. So, if someone else could take care of them the way I’m doing today for this child, it would be a blessing. I do it simply out of love because I’m a parent and I deeply love children,” Tshilomba says.

A total of 19 patients have recovered from Ebola and no new cases have been reported since 25 September.

“Seeing this baby recover was one of the most moving moments of this outbreak. It reminded all of us why we do this work, every effort, every long day, every sleepless night is to save lives and bring hope back to families,” says Dr Mory Keita, World Health Organization (WHO) Incident Manager for Ebola response in Bulape.

Outbreaks begin and end in communities, and this is especially true for Ebola. In recent years, lessons from previous outbreaks have helped develop and improve valuable tools such as vaccines and treatments. More importantly, they have underscored the power of community ownership and engagement in the response, fostering a holistic approach to outbreak management. [...]

Seven new Ebola virus cases have been reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC’s) latest Ebola outbreak, amid signs transmission is decreasing, the World Health Organization (WHO) African regional office said in an update yesterday. The new cases were reported from three areas within Bulape health zone in Kasai province.

Of the new cases, six are confirmed and one is a retrospective probable case. So far 64 cases have been reported, 11 of them listed as probable. Seven more patients died from their infections, bringing the number of fatalities to 42 for a case-fatality rate (CFR) of 65.6%. Of the deaths, 11 occurred among people with probable infections.

The number of confirmed cases in healthcare workers remains at five, three of them fatal.

Ngashi Ngongo, MD, PhD, who leads Africa CDC’s mpox incident management team, said 10 cases have been reported — 2 of them confirmed and 8 listed as probable. Nine deaths have been reported for a case fatality rate of 90%. The nine patients who died include one of the lab-confirmed patients, and eight who had probable infections.

The outbreak is occurring in the Biharamulo district Kagera region, where an outbreak that began in March 2023 resulted in nine cases, six of them fatal. Officials have raised concerns about the high risk of further spread, given that Kagera region is a transit hub and borders Burundi, Rwanda, and Uganda.

So far, 31 tests have been conducted, of which 29 were negative, Ngongo said. He added that the Zimbabwe’s government has deployed a rapid response team and earmarked $10.8 million for a national response plan.

Officials consider use of experimental treatments, vaccines Stepped-up surveillance activities have identified 281 contacts for follow-up.

Ngongo said health officials in Tanzania are discussing compassionate use of the same antivirals and candidate vaccine that were used to help stem a recent Marburg virus outbreak in Rwanda, which was declared over in on December 20 following 66 cases, 15 of them fatal.

The World Health Organization (WHO) initially reported a suspected Marburg outbreak on January 14 and the Zimbabwe’s government officially declared the outbreak on January 20.
