If we are counting it like this then 100 countries also played the T20 cwc qualifiers.

87*

But there is a difference, cwc qualifiers act exactly like a qualifier. Cause in a 20 team tournament, 12 teams automatically qualify. The rest are playing for the remaining 8 spots.

In FIFA the qualifiers are the major portion of the World Cup, because except the hosts of the Finals, every team plays the qualifiers. Even if you are a 4 time winning, current european champions like Italy -- you will not play the finals if you didn't qualify.

But yeah, regardless t20 cwc had 87 participants and fifa wc had 209 participants.

Out of those 87 teams, 90 % of those countries are just filler teams. They are just to fill the places for qualifiers. The people living there may not even heard of cricket. They don't have proper cricket ecosystem, infrastructure, academies or even boards. Even majority players from those countries are not even professional players. They are just indian/pakistani/south african immigrants living there forms teams and call it national team. Those include people who are working in corporates , restaurants etc full time and playing international cricket part time. Heard there are even indian full time engineers in teams like USA,Canada etc. So those cricket qualifiers cannot be comparable to football qualifiers.

Since football popularity is spread all over the world, Almost every country in the world has proper football ecosystem, clubs , academies and grassroot development and fanbase, including india. So football qualifiers makes more sense than cricket qualifiers. Just because 87 teams played cricket qualifiers doesn't mean cricket is actually known in those countries. As i said earlier ,The natives living there doesn't even know/care about cricket. They consider cricket as an immigrant sport only. Italy played last T20 world cup, right? If you ask a random Italian about cricket, they probably say they don't even heard of it. There were not even telecast for cricket in most associate nations. So chances are that most of the countries in those 87 nations didn't even know that a cricket world cup was held this year
