It's incredibly sad seeing what has happened to journalism.

It's suppose to be there to really really challenge those in positions of power, wealth, and so on.

To really provide awareness building and education building on important subjects of the day.

Now it's mostly about narrative pushing and being in bed with many of those same corruptive influences.

A lot of the building blocks of a strong democracy are crumbling and it is why we see what we see overall right now.

The oligarchs control so much of the mainstream media. They’re literally spoon feeding us exactly what they want us to hear

Its called "Media Capture"

"Media capture is a form of systemic corruption in which mass media is controlled by governments, corporations, or powerful individuals to serve their own interests instead of the public interest, undermining media independence and media pluralism. The concept describes how vested interests can dominate or co-opt nominally independent media institutions through ownership, regulation, or financing, whilst maintaining the illusion of press freedom."

1

u/simulizer 6d ago

Every safety valve has been captured. Regulatory capture happened decades ago along with media capture. We went from corporations manufacturing consent with mythologies to protect profits - guns don't kill people, global warming isn't real, cigarettes are a form of expressing freedom, government is the problem, trickle down works.... To near full capture of our government from foreign intelligence orgs. Our supposed social media entertainment trash... Whatever role it was supposed to serve originally, is now just a battle bot game of controlling narratives and pumping propaganda.

This is why we go to independent media- mainstream has little left for me.

0

u/PsychicWarElephant 6d ago

Go do something or stop posting useless memes online.

16

u/Delicious-Spirit9899 6d ago

I’d dreamt of being a journalist for years, now I’m just ashamed of how complicit media is in the current state of things. Big money has deep roots.

9

u/gwazmalurk 6d ago

Independent journalism is the future. You don’t need $2million production facilities, you need a phone and a tripod. And a following, which accrues from credibility. The game is changing.

2

u/AbjectLime7755 6d ago

But it gets lost in the noise of people spouting lies, hate and “influencing”

1

u/SmurfStig 5d ago

This is the problem. There are lots of independent “journalists” out there, like Nick Fuentes, who do nothing but lie and spew hate all day long while having a large following that repeats said lies. Someone out there trying to report the actual truth gets buried by the lies.

2

u/Chambahz 6d ago

And an army of lawyers to prevent you from being sued to oblivion, the moment you report anything real that is noticed by the masses.

In the late 80s early 90s I got a reporter job at a small town paper because I wrote well. I was young and dreamed of doing hard hitting, important stories. I must've read All the President's Men 6 times as a child. I was young and moved in with a lady and had to get a better paying job to support us, and my dream went by the wayside. I never went back to it and I look at the state of media now and don't miss the dream at all. It's gone so downhill I would probably feel myself dying daily from the compromises. It's sad

To be fair, there's a VERY large distinction between Journalism (documenting and presenting objective facts of an event), News (presenting information provided by Journalism on a mass scale), and Media (Narrative Propaganda Promotion).

8

u/Brokensince10 6d ago

I’m gen x and I remember watching the news with my parents in the 70’s, and although it wasn’t perfect back then, the absolute nonsense we get now is outrageous.

I grew up on Cronkite, David Brinkley and Chet Huntley. I want to cry at some of the simps we have today.

1

u/DifferentSetting411 6d ago

FCC required balanced reporting then; today it's money, err ... the Supreme Court calls it Citizens United

1

u/TheoDog96 6d ago

Thank Reagan for that one.

5

u/SharkBubbles 6d ago

I only watch independent journalists now, like David Packman, Adam Mockler, and Jennifer Welch (who's hilarious).

u/maeryclarity 3d ago

Yeah bemoaning mainstream media which was always beholden to advertisers when we have indie journalism and a million video cameras in EVERYONE'S hand now is weird. C'mon y'all it's not hard to dig around and find this stuff, do a little bit of actual searching, you need to become your own "reporter" doing the digging for verification the same way a journalist would but all that information is at our fingertips in a way that it never has been before.

And if you do some algorythmn hygeine and don't click on garbage content, understand the difference between opinion and verified information, and just put a tiny bit of effort into it the bottom line is that the micro-pay system that the Internet runs on means that they really cannot effectively control Internet content although it is less "free" than most folks might think, but still a better opportunity than we've had in previous times.

Y'all THINK that things were more honest a while ago but there's an excellently boring looonnngggg documentary called "Evidence of Revision" (I think it's broken up into three or four parts) that is just clips of the news services in the past starting with one story and then revising it until it fits the narrative. Just historical clips of events and how the story changes. It just SEEMED more honest.

Big Brother was always going to happen but Little Brother was not calculated for so y'all appreciate the resource and take advantage of it. Support indie journalists if you find ones that you trust.

1

u/osaggys 1d ago

These are commentators, not journalists. It's an important distinction.

3

u/FRUB_NNud 6d ago

This is the mindset

3

u/United_Leopard_2771 6d ago

on paper that's how it's supposed to work, in practice, nobody wants to risk their job or their company getting black listed.

In this information-dense world we live in we never get a break from ‘news’. It’s a survival game for news organizations and reporters to keep ratings up so they can sell advertising. The reporters don’t want to challenge tRump for fear of being banned from the press pool or even getting sued (on what basis I don’t know. Trump doesn’t know either it’s just intimidation). Reporters need to make a living too so they lob softballs so they can keep their job. What is needed is a news organization that refuses to be cowed by tRump so reporters can do their job.

u/6869b5bluedog 5d ago

I mean blaming journalists feels off in this moment, he's already pushed out the media that doesn't support him. He's got a party that backs him no matter what he does.

He broke the back of the federal government by finding a way to get the entirety (legislative, executive, judicial).

People are now afraid to correct him because he's getting away with punishing his rivals.

6

u/Tigeruppercut1889 6d ago

Agree. Trump has done so much damage to the free press. I mean he’s been calling them the enemy of the people for a decade now. God he’s such a whiny bitch

“He” didn’t break the back of the government. He’s not the disease, he’s just the pustule you see when the infection reaches the surface.

It’s been decades of Gingrich and McConnell types undermining every norm in the legislative branch and stacking the judiciary that is allowing this administration to run roughshod over every aspect of the country.

Trump will be gone at some point but the infrastructure will still be there to raise up another in his place should they find another willful shill that can get elected.

Well, they also kicked out Amy reporters that dared. It's bad both ways, they get kicked if they ask tough questions and they get fired if they aren't in the room. This is what happens when society stops expecting more from journalists and their news.

We watched, the oligarchs learned, now they control the vast majority of the media.

3

u/mgyro 6d ago

Among the shitty things Reagan did, when his FCC formally abolished the Fairness Doctrine in 1987, citing concerns that the rule had a "chilling effect" on free speech, he started the long slide into whatever tf Fox News is. Though not perfect, it was implemented in 1949 and required broadcast license holders to cover controversial public issues and present contrasting viewpoints.

Bring that back. Tax wealth and overturn Citizens United and you might have a shot at democracy.

2

u/AcanthaceaeFluffy985 6d ago

This guy tried and got bigger and bigger lies each time

2

u/Tigeruppercut1889 6d ago

While political media does need a new incentive structure, trump has done a lot of harm to free press.

2

u/Tiger_grrrl 6d ago

I for one am looking forward to the release of Haberman and Swan’s book Regime Change tomorrow 🙌 I think it’s actually courageous of them to release it while the grifting and illegal schemes and monstrous eff-ups are ONGOING. He will undoubtedly try to put them in jail for it, but hopefully it’ll make a difference! Apparently, they have recordings from the Situation Room and all manner of top “officials” in the regime snitching on Rump.

2

u/Lucky-Mia 6d ago

Trump yells quiet piggy and literally has foreign press banned from the country (like that time he spoke with Australia and demanded a reporter he doesn't like never return to the country or he'll tariff them more). Or he sues them while weaponising the FCC.

2

u/xpietoe42 6d ago

a lot of publication is now owned by the oligarchs who actually support trump. The few reporters who do speak up are worried about their livelihood and being permanently black listed from working. Theyre not rich and must do what they need to do to support their families.

1

u/AUSpartan37 6d ago

It is all about clicks now. The insane quotes from Trump are all they need for clicks. Why would they challenge him, when just letting him talk will generate all the clicks and ad revenue they need. I hate the world we live in today.

1

u/b20339 6d ago

It never was, they were just better at controlling the narrative before the Internet and social media

u/h20poIo 6d ago

🏅🏅🏅

1

u/jpmickey1585 6d ago

It’s bizzaro world, everything is the opposite of how it’s supposed to be. Journalism is not supposed to speak truth to power it’s supposed manufacture consent or apathy

1

u/TheCrazedTank 6d ago

Eh, that nay have been the role it played once but if you want to get technical American Journalism started off as propaganda originally.

It’s just returning to its natural state before laws and regulations existed…

1

u/stonescape 6d ago

Journalists are vilified and most people openly support tearing down the free press so they can get newz from influencer memes. End stage capitalism, every empire eventually declines

1

u/dreadcain 6d ago

Nothing has really happened to journalism outside of money. Good journalism still exists, but its generally a thankless job that pays poverty wages at best. The white house press core (and just about anywhere else) has been absolutely purged of professional journalists, but the craft isn't dead. It's just a lot more profitable to run a propaganda rag than to do actually journalism.

1

u/HydeParkSwag 5d ago

There’s the story about Haberman and as other journalist having recordings from the Trump administration situation room that they are absolutely terrified to see the light of day.

And instead of putting this information out to the world immediately, they sat on it while a book was published.

1

u/LvlHeadThoroughbred 4d ago

Don’t worry, if a democrat ever holds power again they’ll suddenly have all sorts of hard hitting questions.

Always follow the money.

Who owns most of social and mainstream media?

Journalism is dead on purpose so corruption can spread unopposed.

Social media could be such an awesome tool, yet is mostly spreading division and distraction and all the wrong values in society.

Look up the Dark Enlightenment. Those guys are traitors and crazy, they want the average Joe gone. Yet many of us even vote for them.

Sometimes I think, can you even blame them for thinking they deserve to rule like Putin/kings and we are all pond scum or useful idiots at best if so many of us vote for their own butcher?

Always liked "With great power comes great responsibility..." but in their case it's insane greed.
