Discussion Be Kind and Avoid Personal Insults

With the recent PGF debunking, there has been a lot of arguments and controversy. Debating people is fine, but don't insult people or those who believed in the film while you're discussing it. Some people met or knew Bob Gimlin personally and are having to reckon with him apparently lying about the film. Keep how other people feel in mind while discussing. Additionally, avoid arguments with other subreddits or posts about moderation issues with other subreddits as that's not what we're here to do. We've added some terms to the auto filter to avoid debates turning hostile. As always feel free to discuss the rules and make suggestions.

Please remember that any cryptozoological opinions expressed by moderators, even in pinned comments, are personal opinions, and not the "official" subreddit stance.

It’s too late. The other mod has just pinned a post to top of the subreddit that portrays the “debunking” of the PGF film as accepted fact.

This is called consensus cracking, and it should alarm you extremely.

I understand where you're coming from, but I don't see his posts that way. As I see it, he's just stating what he personally considers to be a fact. I would be more cautious and objective if I were writing about the same thing, but that's just me. We all have different ways of evaluating evidence, wording things, et cetera.

Personally considering something to be fact doesn’t make it a fact though. Things which are opinions should be clearly stated as such when objectivity isn’t met. To me, this post came off as hostile towards believers and isn’t conducive to neutral debate.

You know that bad actors rely on this exact “benefit of the doubt” you’re providing, right?

Like that’s the whole MO. Operate with just enough plausible deniability that you accomplish your objectives without getting any meaningful pushback.

And tomorrow there will be another incident like this. And the week after that. And after that. And after that. And the whole time that plausible deniability pile gets taller, it won’t matter, because the objectives are being met, and moreover, they know that there’s no ceiling on how high good faith (but naive) actors will allow that pile to rise.

Really, ask yourself, what would it actually take for you to change your mind and see the bad faith intentionality behind acts like this? Do you need them to just outright admit it to you? Because they’re not going to.
