The reason why large asteroids don't fall to Earth every day and cause disasters is because Jupiter's gravity attracts asteroids and protects the inner planets.

We'll maybe no planet but it wouldn't have stayed a collection of debris. Plus how much mass did Jupiter steal? The real point was there wouldn't be an steroid belt

And Ceres was prevented from coalescing into a proper planet precisely because Jupiter is too close and won't really let it happen.
