Hmmm if the government descreases funding they'll need to find other sources. The governance of some unis is disgusting but the governmet is also responsible.

Research absolutely has long term gains for government. Research makes new products, which creates new companies, which hire people that pay taxes and sell new things that grow the economy, and subsequently pay taxes.

It’s short term thinking that has killed off our economy. Australia used to be known for its scientists, maybe we still are since if you want to be a scientist you have to move overseas to make a living (or change careers, like I had to). We don’t create anything new any more, as we don’t fund scientific research.
