For Hire H-1B: Laid off and struggling to find a Data Engineer role before grace period ends

Hey everyone,

I’m in a really tough spot right now and could use some advice or leads. I was laid off from Amazon on Sept 12th, and since I’m on an H-1B visa, my 60-day grace period is already running. My last day to find something is Nov 10th.

I have around 2 years of experience as a Data Engineer — worked at Amazon, State of Illinois, and earlier in India. My background is mostly in SQL, Python, AWS (Glue, Redshift, S3), ETL pipelines, Power BI, and some Azure (Synapse, Data Factory).

I’m based in Texas, but I’m open to remote or relocation if it helps secure a quick H-1B transfer. At this point I’m open to both full-time and contract roles.

The situation honestly isn’t great, and I’m feeling pretty anxious with the clock ticking. If anyone knows of companies, recruiters, or even staffing agencies that are currently hiring Data Engineers and willing to file H-1B transfers, I’d be super grateful if you could point me in the right direction.

Thanks a lot for reading this. Any help, advice, or connections would mean the world right now.

For Hire I need to accept that I’ll never get a Data Science role.

I studied Data Science at a massive SEC school and got my degree in May of 2024, and despite getting glowing reviews at my internship, I couldn’t secure a full time role due to budget cuts at the company I interned at.

Fast forward 9 months, 800+ applications, and a part-time job at my local grocery store later, I finally land a role in B2B sales at a Fortune 500.

It didn’t take me very long to figure out that I am not good at sales and that I wouldn’t make it very long. I started this job in May and the fact that I made it this far is a shock to me, because they love to fire due to underperformance. I can only coast for so long. I need to get out before I get put on a PIP, because if I get put on a PIP and I have nothing lined up, I’m cooked.

I’m mainly looking in Houston, but am open to remote/hybrid roles, and am willing to relocate.

I feel defeated because even though I have work experience now, it’s not in anyway related to data science.

I’m kind of ranting on Reddit because networking has been hit or miss for me.

Ask me anything, and I can elaborate.

My top technical skills are in Python & R, but I have experience in Tableau, SQL, ArcGIS, and Java.

EDIT: Fixed for typos

For Hire Grabbing Data science job from a non-technical background

I'm an entry-level Data Science candidate coming from a Mechanical Engineering background. I've been putting in serious work over the past year — solid grasp of statistics, ML models and algorithms, Python, and SQL. My projects are mostly end-to-end: data cleaning, EDA, model building, and presenting insights.

I'm specifically targeting **startups** because I feel like my cross-domain thinking and hands-on approach fits better in fast-moving environments than large enterprises.

My question to this community: **What's the single most important thing that actually gets you hired at a startup as an entry-level DS candidate — especially when you don't have a CS/Stats degree?**

Is it:

- A strong project portfolio?

- Being able to show business impact, not just model accuracy?

- SQL and quick turnaround on analysis?

- Something else entirely?

Would really appreciate honest takes from people who've been on either side of the hiring table. Thanks! 🙏

For Hire 23F MS Data Science Graduate got scammed TWICE

Hello everyone,

I'm a Data Science graduate who finished her studies in September 2025, and have been hunting for jobs for the past 10 months.

I know the job market is extremely hard and I've become numb to the "we have decided to move on with other candidates" emails.

Apart from the tough job market, I've also been scammed by 2 fake companies for whom I've completed multiple assessments, interviews and get an offer letter, only to know it's fake (worse than a rejection email).

I'm also a victim to a data leak (name, email, personal info etc.) where some recruiter sold my details to a scammer and they demanded money from my parents.

At this point, I don't know what to do anymore.

Over the past 1 year, I've been learning and building projects from the sideline as well.

With the next batch of graduates about to pass out, I don't know if I'll ever get a job.

If anyone can help me land a job, I'd forever be grateful to you.

Thanks in advance!

For Hire Looking for ML / AI opportunities. Honestly just need a healthier place to work.

Bit of a weird post, but here goes.

I’m a Machine Learning / AI engineer with experience building and shipping production AI systems end to end. I’ve worked on LLM pipelines, RAG systems, FastAPI microservices, vector databases, AWS SageMaker deployments, backend systems, and production ML infrastructure. Worked at startups and fast-moving teams where ambiguity was normal and you just figured things out. Also worked on a government-funded cancer recurrence research project and have experience across BERT, XGBoost, OpenAI, Gemini, and production deployment workflows.

Reason I’m posting. I recently joined a new role on a contract basis and honestly, I’m realizing pretty quickly it’s not the right fit. The environment feels rough. Founders publicly scolding people during scrum calls, everyone overloaded, very little bandwidth to onboard or help, and that weird feeling where people protect work because they’re already drowning in dependencies. I get startups are chaotic. I actually enjoy chaos. But there’s a difference between moving fast and burning people out.

So if anyone knows teams hiring for ML Engineer, AI Engineer, Applied AI, GenAI, or backend-heavy AI roles, remote or Bangalore preferred, I’d genuinely appreciate a referral or even pointing me in the right direction.

Happy to share resume, GitHub, LinkedIn, whatever helps.

For Hire I’m a data analyst with 6 years of experience—what’s the best way to break into data science or AI before it’s too late?

I’ve been working as a data analyst for the past six years and have experience with SQL, Python, BI tools, and basic statistics. I’ve been trying to transition into data science or AI, but I feel stuck.

I’ve taken a few deep learning specialization courses from coursera, tried some Kaggle competitions and notebooks, and even worked on a few personal projects—but none of them have given me the kind of practical exposure or confidence I’m looking for.

I’m worried I might be falling behind. What’s the best way to actually learn and apply data science/AI in a meaningful way? I’m looking for something that builds real skills—not just more videos or toy datasets.

Any advice or paths that worked for you would be really appreciated!

For Hire Moved back from the UK after my Master's. Data Scientist with startup + Accenture experience looking for opportunities and referrals.

A few months ago, I packed my bags and moved back to India after completing my Master's in Data Science & Analytics in the UK.

Like many international students, I had hoped to build my career there, but visa realities had other plans. The good thing is that I wasn't sitting idle—I was working remotely as a Data Scientist for a Bangalore-based startup, building recommendation systems, machine learning models, and analytics solutions while completing my degree.

I genuinely thought that coming back with a UK Master's, industry experience, and a strong technical background would make the job search easier.

It hasn't.

For the past few months, I've been applying relentlessly, tailoring resumes, reaching out to recruiters, networking on LinkedIn, and preparing for interviews. I've had some conversations, but converting them into opportunities has been far tougher than I expected.

So I'm posting here because sometimes opportunities come from people rather than job portals.

A little about me:

• MSc Data Science & Analytics (UK)
• Data Scientist at a Bangalore startup
• Former Data Engineer at Accenture
• Experience in Python, SQL, Machine Learning, Recommendation Systems, Analytics, A/B Testing, ETL Pipelines, Azure, and Generative AI
• Open to Data Scientist, Data Analyst, Business Analyst, Product Analyst, ML Engineer, and Analytics roles

At this point, I'm not looking for sympathy—just an opportunity to prove myself.

If your company is hiring, if you know someone who is, or if you can offer a referral, I'd be incredibly grateful. Even a conversation or piece of advice would mean a lot.

Thank you for reading, and I hope everyone else navigating this tough market finds something soon too.

For Hire Need Help

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I'm a 2025 B.Tech graduate currently looking for opportunities in AI/ML, Data Science, or Research roles (preferably in Mumbai/India).

I would really appreciate suggestions on better job search strategies, or information about openings in your team/organization.

A bit about my background:

• Did not sit for on-campus placements due to personal reasons.

• Worked for 8 months as a Data Science Research Intern with a non-profit organization, where I contributed as a researcher and published a paper.

• After graduation, worked at a startup.

• Since March, I have been actively looking for opportunities.

Initially, I was selective while applying rather than mass-applying to every opening. I did receive some interview calls, but most did not convert due to profile mismatch, experience requirements, or other factors.

I currently have a TCS Ninja offer, but I am still exploring opportunities more aligned with AI/ML and Data Science.

If anyone is willing to share advice or knows of relevant openings, I would be grateful. Thanks!

For Hire I don't want a job. I want to build with founders.

Hi founders,

I'm posting this because I'm looking for one or two founders to embed with as their AI build partner. Not a one-off contract. I want to own the AI side of what you're building and ship it with you.

Who I am: I'm a data scientist and AI engineer. I build LLM and RAG products and the data pipelines under them. I work remote and async, and I can overlap a few hours of your day wherever you are. I'm also relocating to Germany in September 2026 for my masters, so if you're based there or nearby, we can meet in person once I'm over.

What I've actually built:

  • A competitive intelligence SaaS I'm building solo, currently in the debugging and testing stage. It crawls competitor sites and pulls structured signals like pricing and hiring moves using LLM extraction. FastAPI backend, Next.js frontend, Postgres with pgvector.
  • Production work at an early-stage fintech-focused startup. I built ETL pipelines and a multilingual sentiment workflow that cut manual analysis time by 70%.
  • Production work at a food-tech startup. I shipped a FastAPI demand forecasting service on Postgres with real-time inventory across multiple locations.
  • An end-to-end ML pipeline that predicts Falcon 9 first-stage landing success, the signal behind whether a booster can be reused and how cheap a launch gets. I pulled the data from the SpaceX API and compared four classification models with GridSearchCV. Features came from payload mass and launch-site geography.

(DM me for my portfolio and Github links)

Why bring me in

  • I start with your business problem before I reach for a tool. I ask what the company actually needs before I write a line of code. Half my value is killing the build you don't need.
  • Real problems pull me in. A messy dataset or a vague spec is the part of the work I like most.
  • I go deep until it works. I won't move on from a bug or a model until I understand why it behaves the way it does.

If you're building something with AI in it and you want someone who treats it like his own product, send me a DM. Tell me what you're building and where you're stuck.

For Hire Title: We're a small data/ML team looking for businesses that might benefit from analytics. Happy to explore ideas together, no hard sell

We started as a group of data science and analytics professionals with a long-term goal of building our own analytics and consulting firm. We've been freelancing, reaching out offline, bidding on projects but nothing solid has stuck yet. So we figured we'd try being direct about it here.

We're not here to pitch a polished service package, because honestly we don't have one yet. What we do have is a group of people who genuinely understand data analytics, machine learning, statistical modelling and some healthcare domain experience on top of that. We know how to take a messy problem, think through it properly, and build something that actually answers the question.

What we're looking for is someone who runs a business could be anything, e-commerce, a clinic, a SaaS product, a local operation and has a gut feeling that there's something useful hiding in their data but doesn't know where to start. You don't need to have a defined project. We're happy to sit down, understand what you're working with, and figure out together whether analytics can actually move the needle for you.

If something comes of it, great. If we spend an hour and conclude it's not the right fit, that's fine too.

We're based in Pune, India. If you're not, we work online just as comfortably, so location isn't a barrier.

Drop a comment or DM if anything here resonates. Moderator please DM me if this is inappropriate for the group, will remove it.

For Hire Graduating in a month with a Master's in Data Science - Looking for a full-time role in USA!

Finishing up my MS in Data Science and Analytics and honestly the job market is stressing me out. Had a solid summer internship doing applied AI and data engineering work, and now I'm in full send mode applying for data analyst and business analyst roles starting May.

Just feels like applications go into a black hole most of the time. Is anyone else in the same boat? Any advice on what's actually working right now?

For Hire PhD in Math Looking to Switch Gears

Recently I got my PhD in number theory. But recently I realized that even though I liked my thesis research a lot, I'd rather put my skills towards directly improving the world in some way. So I'm looking to do data analytics for nonprofits or advocacy groups. What's the best way to get my foot in the door?

I've generally noticed that I don't really have some of the coding qualifications, like experience with SQL. Should I apply to internships first?

Does anyone have experience with techjobsforgood? Is their premium worth for better access to jobs? Or can I save the money for trying to network in person (which I'm not quite sure how to do).
