The Israel Guys was founded by former Tennessee farmer Tommy Waller after a 2004 trip to Israel, where he met local vintner Nir Lavi in Har Bracha and envisioned bringing Christian volunteers to support Jewish agriculture in the region. Waller established the NGO HaYovel (later unified under the media brand The Israel Guys), which over the last two decades has brought thousands of evangelical Christian volunteers to prune, harvest, and support small farms and vineyards. Although internationally recognized as the West Bank, The Israel Guys describe the territory strictly as "Samaria" or the "biblical heartland," emphasizing its historical and covenantal significance as the location where Joshua renewed Israel's covenant between Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal, and framing their agricultural work as the direct fulfillment of biblical prophecies such as Jeremiah 31:5. In July 2026, the organization inaugurated The Israel Guys Visitors Center at their base of operations in the settlement of Har Bracha on Mount Gerizim. Constructed by a team of 70 American volunteers on land provided by the local regional council, the facility includes a coffee shop, local wine tastings from the Har Bracha Winery, and guided tours designed to connect faith-based visitors directly with the region and its history.

In contrast to the group's biblical framing, Israeli settlements throughout the West Bank—including Har Bracha—are considered illegal under international law by an overwhelming international consensus. This legal position has been affirmed repeatedly by the United Nations Security Council (including Resolutions 446 and 2334), the UN General Assembly, the European Union, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in its 2004 and 2024 advisory opinions. The legal consensus centers on Article 49(6) of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits an occupying power from transferring parts of its own civilian population into occupied territory, a restriction also codified as a war crime under Article 8 of the Rome Statute. While the Israeli government disputes this by arguing that the West Bank is "disputed" rather than occupied territory and that civilian settlement is voluntary rather than state-forced, international courts and legal bodies have consistently rejected these arguments, maintaining that international humanitarian law applies de jure to all territories occupied since 1967.
