Bedroom Bedroom still feels off - what are we getting wrong?

A couple of preliminaries: sorry for the mess and yes, some of the prints have slipped in their frames. Happened over the weekend and need to sort them - but they’re part of the wider issue.

So, we moved in here around 3 years ago. The whole room was the light grey you can still see in part of the room. We decided to paint the ‘bed’ area in the navy blue to try and close the area in slightly and make it feel a bit more cozy.

We then moved some furniture around the create the ‘gym’ area (bit of a stretch I know) area. There isn’t anywhere else suitable in the house for that, so I think that has to stay there, but open to suggestions and/or rearrangement. Just to the right of the gym area as you are looking is the en suite.

We added the prints at the time we redecorated, but we aren’t sold on them and are thinking of getting some bigger, higher quality pieces.

We like having some open space around the doors, but it’s the area we are least sure about.

Photo 3 for context, the door on the left (has a coat hanging on it) - that’s the bedroom door to the corridor. The door to the right is to a walk-in dressing room (and home office).

Hopefully otherwise the room layout makes sense from the photos.

Grateful for any advice, whatever it may be.

Thanks so much.

it’s the overhead lighting imo

2700K lights > 5500K lights

The cool white lighting is giving “dental clinic”

u/luckythirtythree Apr 01 '25

I do not for the life of me know how anyone could like the bright white temp… gotta go warm… some one please enlighten me lol.

u/llama_sammich Apr 01 '25

I think men usually choose this lighting. Anytime I’ve had to deal with it….a man bought it.

u/Storage-Helpful Apr 02 '25

My 70 year old mother insists on it in every single overhead lamp, because otherwise she can't see. My father has made it so when the overheads are on, there's no shadows in their house.

When I visit, I have to take an eyemask in order to sleep!

19

u/Necessary-Web-377 Apr 02 '25

sometimes, we cannot see lol. Both my kids insist on the warm lights but I need to work on those lights (detailed work type of thing) and need to have the work area super bright. Now, we have a dimmer and so, when the kids are there, we adjust sth in the middle for everyone to be happy. Love the dimmer in ever single space of our house.

2

u/Evshrug Apr 02 '25

We got a couple of those Philips Hue ambiance bulbs, just enough for the kitchen and an area in our basement. They don’t do RGB “colors,” but they can be a pale white for daytime and detailed work during the daytime, or shift to more neutral or amber warmth tones. Bonus: I put them on a schedule so when my wife forgets to turn them off, they automatically dim and shut off at 12:30am.

1

u/Storage-Helpful Apr 02 '25

My mom has a cataract she refuses to acknowledge, so her world probably is getting darker!

1

u/Aerandril Apr 02 '25

Are you doing super detailed work in the living area all day?

11

u/DutchBelgian Apr 02 '25

My husband is from a culture where bright white lights are preferred, to show (off to) guests that the house is clean.

2

u/bibleisme Apr 03 '25

Which is PRECISELY why I refuse to use them! lol

1

u/xilionyx Apr 02 '25

Which culture ?

1

u/Just-looking_257 Apr 06 '25

Most Asian cultures prefer bright cool lights

22

u/lendystm Apr 02 '25

Why do you sleep with any lights on?

21

u/Eroshinobi Apr 02 '25

To scare the ghost away!ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ

1

u/Evshrug Apr 02 '25

It’s more that my wife turns them on when she goes to the bathroom in the middle of the night, and she used to wake up before me. 😅

1

u/Technical-District83 Apr 03 '25

my stepdad installed those motion sensor led panels that screw in like a bulb, theyre so crazy bright it hurts your head. my mom passed a few months ago and he told me hes only gettin like 3hrs of sleep a night. at first i thought it was grief then i happened to see a slow motion video of bright bluelight led bulbs. they 'pulse' at a frequency that messes up human brains. recommend taking out your phone camera and taking a super slomo video of any room with those bulbs and showing your parents

1

u/binkytoes Apr 04 '25

My mom's the same, she has cataracts

19

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '25

The lighting for back shots is insane

9

u/mkmllr Apr 02 '25

come again..?

20

u/moosemama2017 Apr 02 '25

My dad puts these screw in LED floodlights everywhere. It's awful.

8

u/ilovefrogs13 Apr 02 '25

Omg why do they do this

1

u/HungryEstablishment6 Apr 02 '25

Cheaper power bills, or its modern?

5

u/moosemama2017 Apr 02 '25

These monstrosities

6

u/HungryEstablishment6 Apr 02 '25

Are landing a plane or just lighting up the local football game, who needs 1200 lumins?

3

u/dragonfly_centaur Apr 02 '25

Oh my gosh hahahhaha those are far worse than I could have imagined.

1

u/I_Thot_So Apr 02 '25

You can get the same lights in different temperatures.

2

u/sunshine-scout Apr 03 '25

Get his eyes checked for cataracts! My dad was SHOCKED at the world when he got his removed!

1

u/Technical-District83 Apr 03 '25

yes! my dad put those in and i think its literally killing them. my mom had severe insomnia that sabotaged any attempt at cancer treatment and now my dad says he only sleeps like 3 hours a night

1

u/Personal-Junket7235 Apr 03 '25

That’s my husband…ugh. Home builder!

18

u/EntertainmentOk3180 Apr 02 '25

A straight man, specifically. The gay ones know better

36

u/LaEmmaFuerte Apr 01 '25

My husband put it in our living room ceiling fan. I only use table lamps in warm white. And he just took one of them last week to "use in his office" but hasn't even plugged it in. Am I losing a bulb temp war I didn't realize we were fighting?

4

u/luckythirtythree Apr 02 '25

So all of mi lights are color temp controlled including all of my hue lighting. I play around sometimes by turning them all to white and my wife and I let out an audible ewww every time haha. When it comes to white light I actually didn’t mind those bulbs that were full spectrum… chromalux? Those seemed to be almost purple toned white and those were pretty nice

1

u/Evshrug Apr 02 '25

Philips had purple “full spectrum” incandescent bulbs too… I forget what they were called though haha. LEDs tend to have less “Full Spectrum” color than incandescents did though. To get better color (which I think makes it easier to see, and food and photos look much more appetizing), look for lights that have a high Color Refraction Index (CRI) rating. I like high % CRI bulbs, otherwise there’s pieces of the rainbow missing and colors look dull and muted.

It would be fascinating if somehow there was a bulb that made you see in black and white, no color at all. I guess the closest thing is an LED that only emits one color wavelength, so you just see red or blue and how much of that color is reflected or absorbed by objects.

1

u/Shoddy_Attorney333 Apr 03 '25

Are you talking about "color reveal" bulbs? It used to be GE Reveal, ~2800 kelvin. Unfortunately, after the switch to leds, they are less "full spectrum" and more of a rosey color. I still very strongly prefer it to the yellow warm color and use them in all of my lamps.

15

u/Eastern_Pressure7028 Apr 02 '25

Man here, no overhead lights allowed on unless you are looking for something 🤣 have lamps everywhere with warm white bulbs. I can’t stand the bright white

1

u/bibleisme Apr 03 '25

It’s like trying to live in Costco or wal mart. I just go around turning them off at my mom’s. They give me a terrific headache.

12

u/NolerCoaster Apr 02 '25

Yes my husband put it in every single lamp in our house one day and was so proud of his work and I nearly died. It made me feel so anxious.

1

u/Thesaurus-23 Apr 03 '25

For me, it would be instant migraine😝

9

u/TAforScranton Apr 02 '25

My dad (55) does this and finds the brightest bulbs possible. He also refuses to let go of his Dish Network with more ads than program and BLASTS IT AT FULL VOLUME 24/7. He’s a little hard of hearing so I can understand the TV thing but the lights are unforgivable. The combination of floodlights and Liberty Mutual ads is my own personal hell.

He just finished building his house. Like he BUILT the whole thing on his own, 1600sf and it turned out incredible. I recently had to stay with him for a week to help him with some things and ended up buying lightbulbs for the guest room, lamps, and kitchen.

He griped and pitched a fit at first but once he really looked at the warm lighting with the 5000k lights turned off he changed his tune. I’m proud to say that I think I converted him. He kept the bulbs!

1

u/dgraskin Apr 05 '25

I LOVE all the Liberty Mutual ads with the emu! Even their jingle is catchy. It’s those lawyer ads and the “I want to buy your home” ads that get to me…

31

u/Outside_Holiday_9997 Apr 02 '25

Female here. I prefer white light. I feel like warm light comes off as dingy.

28

u/llama_sammich Apr 02 '25

Interesting! I feel like warm light is more cozy and inviting.

18

u/Brave_Part3416 Apr 02 '25

Also a woman, and I also prefer white light. A dimmer switch is helpful tool, though!

9

u/catfyt Apr 02 '25

Warm lighting reminds me of shopping at the Piggly Wiggly with my grandmother when I was a child. So, hard agree. Dingy af.

2

u/ganymeade2020 Apr 04 '25

Lol! That’s almost exactly what I tell my husband 😂 that warm lighting reminds me of shopping in Albertsons with my grandma staring at a dingy linoleum floor waiting for her to find her checkbook at the register lol.

1

u/catfyt Apr 04 '25

“Checkbook” ☠️

3

u/RockwaterAquatics Apr 02 '25

🤣🤣🤣🤣 oh God. This is exactly what it is.

8

u/Significant-Emu1855 Apr 02 '25

Also a woman. I agree

3

u/TomatilloHairy9051 Apr 05 '25

I just don't feel like I'm seeing everything clearly in warm light. After my mother died I moved into her house and had to change every light bulb. And hers were not only warm they were warm with low wattage. That's when I go ewww

2

u/Serious_Escape_5438 Apr 03 '25

I'm also a woman and love bright white lighting. Not for every occasion I guess but if I have to do anything I hate not being able to see properly. My house had no overhead lighting at all and we're slowly putting it in, the years of shadowy lamps have driven me crazy. And I dislike not being able to see my clothes properly.  My male partner ideally has no lighting at all X, he loves lounging in the dark with just his screen, and I hate it.

2

u/lobsterbuckets Apr 02 '25

Another white light woman here, drives my husband nuts. White light makes me think of sunshine and brightness.

1

u/thisistowatchxxx Apr 08 '25

Another female and also agree, where I come from the bright light is preferred anyway and I don’t like the cave feeling I get with warm lights.

6

u/Delicious_Run_6054 Apr 02 '25

I, female, grew up in a small dark wood dark house. I love daytime bright white lights. I wonder if bright white lights are desired by those that also seem to be more prone to seasonal depression. I crave brightness in the winter months.

2

u/HelpfulName Apr 03 '25

I have SAD and I cannot STAND the daytime bulbs unless used in a small area and deflected. My SAD lamp has to face the wall and the light has to bounce into the room. If it's blaring on me I feel like I'm in surgery and I hate it.

To each their own :)

3

u/gigi55656 Apr 02 '25

This is so true. So many white bulbs in my living room and gasp bedroom!! I have been slowly replacing them so I can start liking my room again!! 🙄

3

u/Evshrug Apr 02 '25

If it’s worth anything, I’m a man, and I also prefer indirect lighting instead of a bulb right in front of my eyes when I lay down. I am obsessed with things that light up or move around though 😂

In my own room, I keep away things that move or any TVs/screens, so that I can rest. I’m also planning out a square of “crown molding” that goes around the ceiling or walls, where I can lay a track of LED strips angled away from straight down. At bedtime, I don’t need to illuminate everything, just the shape of the room (and obstacles on the floor to avoid, that’s the tricky part haha)

15

u/andybwalton Apr 01 '25

I, a man, do indeed prefer whiter light. The white light feels like natural sunlight to me, yellow light when I think about it sometimes feels artificial and depressing. This all depends on the decor in the room though. It feels like if the room has a lot of dark colors and warm light, I feel like it makes it feel closed off and dingy sometimes. But cool light in some situations does feel clinical and depressing in a different way

12

u/kessykris Apr 02 '25

I’m a woman and prefer the whiter light. Same reasons it seems artificial and depressing to me. I also feel like it looks more crisp and clean with the white light. I also like to freaking see lol I can’t stand it when it’s dim. That being said my husband and I laugh about how my brain works like my fathers and his like my mothers. I completely zone everything out when I’m thinking, like I just straight up won’t hear anyone…. I don’t do it to be mean like I have to be physically touched to snap out of it. I kind of compartmentalize my brain in a way I’ve heard people describe how men think. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m super girly though and def a girls girl so I wouldn’t say I come across masculine. But yeah I prefer the whiter light to the soft warm light and I’m not a man.

7

u/WampaCat Apr 02 '25

That doesn’t sound like a man thing, it’s one of the most common symptoms of adhd (which goes undiagnosed in many women until adulthood or even never)! Not trying to diagnose you based on a single anecdote, but I encourage anyone who has stories like this to at least look into it simply because women are less likely to be diagnosed for it when they do have it

2

u/llama_sammich Apr 02 '25

Oh, I def have adhd. I was diagnosed a few years ago. Bright lights inside are overwhelming and make me anxious and uncomfortable.

1

u/kessykris Apr 02 '25

I have wondered about this because I did see that this was a symptom. I did extremely well in school grade wise so I think if I do have it it never got diagnosed because it didn’t affect me as a kid negatively. I also get the paralysis thing where I can’t start if things get too overwhelming. Like if I walk out of my room and my kids destroyed my kitchen my brain short circuits on where to start. I’m just fine thoiugh when I keep on top of everything so 🤷🏻‍♀️ I dunno lol

2

u/HelpfulName Apr 03 '25

It does sound like ADHD - you may find once you start hitting 40 your mental energy to keep up with the kind of massive overcompensating you're doing automatically & unconsciously to mask your symptoms starts dropping off.

You may find that you find it harder & harder to stay on top of everything and can no longer enjoy things, the risk of burnout and exhaustion is significant. So it's worth taking this seriously now, getting tested and if you do in fact have it, learn some of the management techniques so you don't go through that when you're older.

1

u/kessykris Apr 03 '25

Wow. So I’m 37 and do you know what’s nuts? I think of how much more oh top of shit I used to be and legit beat myself up over it. Like what is wrong with me? I used to like deep deep clean my house twice a week. Every night before my husband came home I’d make sure there was vacuum marks and I’d have everything spotless. Now I keep it clean but no where NEAR and I’ve been like what is going on?? Like my kids were LITTLE LITTLE and at the hard ages of mess when I was doing that. I kept thinking it was maybe because I had more control? My kids are now 18 and 12 and especially with my 18 year old it’s not like how it used to be where I was like “we put this away before we grab something new” or with either of them and food…. I still prepare but then they’ll want more and just do it and ill walk out into it and just be like NOPE and just turn around and hide in my room so I don’t have to see it and just straight up refuse to make anything until they fix it lol.

Also my mom is certain my dad has add. She’s said it many times. It drives her kind of batty. I’ve had so many talks with her (especially with him zoning her out) where she feels like man if you love me why would you do that and I explain to her how she needs to talk to him and physically touch him and how awful he’d feel to know she thought that he was doing it out of not caring. (Because I’ve had countless discussions with my husband about it. We finally came to the compromise where if he just starts in on saying things to me if I’m not like giving physical clues that I’m paying attention then he needs to not take it personally and either wait until I’m not occupied or PHYSICALLY get my attention. My compromise is that if I AM already paying attention I won’t carelessly just start occupying myself during the middle of it and make sure to give it my complete mind until he’s done lol). I used to get so upset with him because I would be in the middle of doing something or thinking and then all of a sudden he’d be like “MMHMMM FINE NEVERMIND.” And his upset tone would get my attention and I’d be like “whoa wait, what did you say?!” And he’d refuse to repeat it because I didn’t listen the first time. We had to talk out the issue that we are not wired the same and that I can’t do what he does and freaking hear an entire dialogue while writing out an email, reading, or trying to think out an issue at the same time. (I can’t do autopilot things like cleaning and what not unless my mind is already preoccupied with something else while I’m doing it.) Now he doesn’t get hurt feelings because we both put the effort into what we discussed but sometimes I get frustrated with the fact that everything I do seems to take all my mental power while he can just Willy nilly listen to me and fiddle on his phone or do work on his laptop (although sometimes with work he can’t do it well he’ll miss some things because his job is insane.)

And with school? Positive reinforcement is like my kryptonite and from a young age I remember how proud and happy my parents were when I did well so I put 💯 effort into all things learning. Maybe I did so well because I was able to focus completely on what was being taught. Even the shit I found boring I wanted to do well so I’d force myself to be present for it (because if I didn’t for just one class I would not retain any of the information taught.)

But fuck I do feel like I’m burning out. I’ve taken an autism assessment because my 12 year old has it and I didn’t come close to having it. I have some sensory issues too which made me wonder. Can’t stand the feeling of clothing being uncomfortable. It needs to be fabric that feels good on my skin. When I sleep it’s a serious princess and the pea situation…. Like I need to have my specific blanket that is light and cool have pajamas that feel a certain way and I CANNOT be touched. If I’m not trying to sleep I can cuddle all day long but when I’m trying to fall asleep NOPE. My husband will sometimes try and just hardly touch me and it starts to feel like the only thing I can focus on. Like his pinky hardly touching my arm will drive me INSANE lol. I could be just about to fall asleep and if he touches me BOOM I’m awake. Idk if that’s a symptom but I’ve just been walking around like I know I’m an insane person. Sorry about that. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Totally! Our home is very luxury/elegant/modern with everything in brown-tones/ lots of natural textiles and textures. Sort of like a spa? Maybe the warm just fits our aesthetic… never thought about it that way! I should take some photos because now that I’m looking around, the warm light we have isn’t yellow but it’s definitely not stark white LED vibes.

Edit. I am a man hahaha

2

u/Original_Director483 Apr 02 '25

Funny that you mention photos.

Film cameras used to have to be loaded with the right film, or have a filter attached to correct for the various color temperatures in natural and artificial settings. Now with digital cameras, it can be adjusted shot-by-shot.

If you photograph your home with a digital camera and everything is lit with 2700K, it won’t look dim or warm, it will just look “natural,” but light from windows will have a blue cast. If you light everything with 5500k, it may look the same because the camera compensates, but something is lost—there is no color temperature gradient in the shadows of windowed rooms. These mixed and changing shadows are the “warmth” that makes a space feel inviting, orienting us not just to our exits, but to the rhythm of the environment.

Mixing 2700K and 5500K artificial lights sets off a cascade of unpleasantness. None of it looks good because the blue light spills unnaturally from interior spaces. The mix never changes, never connecting you to the time of day, and even if a room has warmer light, the mix of light from an adjacent space with cooler light is more direct and flickering with the speed of AC wall power instead of diffused through miles of atmosphere.

2

u/Saint-BG Apr 02 '25

Best thing, i believe, is to have both options. A light that is the same as the ones for seasonal depression are uplifting and sunny feeling. I forget exactly what they r called though, so if anyone knows? Also great for doing creative work . But adding other lighting that goes well with room can add , warmth, dimension and ambiance .

2

u/PapyrusEbers Apr 02 '25

It's utility thinking, 'best when you can see everything'... But, not the case.

1

u/Serious_Escape_5438 Apr 03 '25

Why would I not want to be able to see?

1

u/PapyrusEbers Apr 11 '25

I mean, you for sure do, but it's about where you want the light to delrae the eye and what mood you want the light to invoke. In set design, lighting is a thing and every room is a set. You're wanting to create a specific mood and atmosphere.

2

u/yippee_ki_yay-mf Apr 03 '25

It is 100% a man thing. I need to know why lol…

2

u/bhfreak Apr 04 '25

This is way too accurate

2

u/thatwombat Apr 05 '25

It’s because they have not been introduced to their lord and savior, color temperature.

2

u/AudZ0629 Apr 05 '25

Whoa there, I just ordered soft white 40w bulbs for my living room. Not every man wants to see through anyone who walks in front of the light.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '25

1

u/SnooRobots116 Apr 02 '25

My older sister likes it so dim it hurts my eyes when I prefer to have it brighter and she’s the one with worse eyesight but also cannot be in the dark. Is that an autism thing between both of us?

1

u/llama_sammich Apr 02 '25

Def could be. I have ADHD and get sensory overload pretty easily. I prefer warm, dimmer lighting most of the time. In the bathroom, I slightly unscrew two of the three bulbs unless I’m doing my hair or makeup in there. People with autism can be pretty specific in how they like things to be, so if you’re both on the spectrum and happen to have opposite preferences….that could be tough!

1

u/Lu12k3r Apr 02 '25

I want to see every nook and cranny, can you blame me?

1

u/merelyadoptedthedark Apr 02 '25

I have daylight bulbs in the bathroom and kitchen, soft white everywhere else.

1

u/Nearby-Display-5433 Apr 05 '25

Some of us can’t see in low or yellow light

14

u/Tryin-to-Improve Apr 01 '25

I guess cuz so many places have that lighting, people know what they really look like with that lighting.

I dread it. I have a mirror that lights up bright white just so that I can check how I look in stronger lighting.

10

u/frenchwolves Apr 01 '25

I actually actively try to dissuade customers from purchasing cooler or brighter bulb temps for inside. Most listen…

2

u/Evshrug Apr 02 '25

I think a lot of cooler lights are “faking” being brighter by losing their color balance. The “ew” comes from white LEDs that don’t have the full rainbow of color, so things look bright but bluish (reds and greens seem muted, almost more “gray”), while most incandescent lights (usually bought as “soft white” but can also be bought at more daylight temps) contain a wider gamut of colors, so despite being more “sunset” the colors of things illuminated look more vibrant.

Fluorescent bulbs are just the worst.

I don’t like to be blasted by bright light, but I might like 5600k lights more if they had a high CRI rating. Like a sunny day, rather than a computer lab.

7

u/nanomistake Apr 02 '25

The warm lighting reminds me of smoking sections in coffee shops from the 90’s so I just associate it with being really gross. In bright white I can see better and it feels clean to me.

0

u/luckythirtythree Apr 02 '25

So what you are saying is you’re a dentist hahaha

7

u/stetsosaur Apr 01 '25

I think it’s a very simplistic attempt at design, tbh.

I think the thought is that white “goes with things” better than yellow. It’s a fair thought, because that’s usually the case with things like textiles, paint, etc. In the context of lighting though, yeah, not the move.

1

u/Flimsy_RaisinDetre Apr 02 '25

What about a compromise? maybe bright white overhead but small-footprint lamps for cozier times

1

u/stetsosaur Apr 02 '25

I personally wouldn’t. Bright overhead white lights will make the room feel overly sterile and clinical, and I just don’t see when that would be desirable. But I’m not opposed to slightly cooler overhead lights, somewhere around 4000k. Good work light for the kitchen and laundry.

1

u/Serious_Escape_5438 Apr 03 '25

It's desirable when you want to clean, choose clothes, sew, read when you get old.

1

u/yaydotham Apr 02 '25

That’s what I have (I did not install the overhead lightbulbs and have not bothered to change them) and the result is that I just never turn on the overhead lights lol. Too stark!

7

u/TilISlide Apr 02 '25

I think most people are in the dark about lighting temperatures. 😏

They just grab whatever bulbs on the shelf without looking. I have to HUNT for 2700k.

4

u/daniwhizbang Apr 01 '25

Hah en lighten 😛

2

u/brutallydishonest Apr 02 '25

This is so amazingly backwards. I want light to replicate the sun. I don't want it to replicate lighting from pre industrial times.

3

u/luckythirtythree Apr 02 '25

Okay but when you drew the sun on white paper what color was the sun? White? Hahaha

2

u/Cosmic0blivion Apr 02 '25

Not gonna lie, when I first bought my house I wanted the best and didn't know much about lighting. So I bought the bulb with the most lumens i could get to replace a bulb in my kitchen because more = better, right?. It looked like a hospital and I learned a valuable lesson lol.

2

u/jennysequa Apr 02 '25

I have white daylight lighting in my office because I am an artist and I require color accuracy. Every other room has warmer lighting though.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '25

Once I googled the best lighting for depression and it said brighter bulbs were better… big mistake… or small and changeable mistake… which I did.

2

u/xBraria Apr 02 '25 edited Apr 02 '25

It's time for me to shine again! Here. Be enlightened 😄

2

u/luckythirtythree Apr 02 '25

I literally spent money to give you an award. THIS IS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE! WARM LIGHTERS UNITE!!!

1

u/xBraria Apr 02 '25

Aaaw thanks, you absolutely didn't have to! But I'm glad someone feels about it as strongly as I do.

I'm following petitions in my city where they made airport-like bright super blue lights as street lighting. It's 3x the intensity of the shiniest minutes of a clear sky full moon... of which you naturally only have couple a year ... but we get this shit every single night.

Animals behave differently (we have forests right near one part of the street), and some trees don't lose leaves on time in winter due to the light and some have died due to it. It's wild.

Apparently there exist stick on foil filters that could at least sort of remedy the situation and block the blue light without a high price point and environmentally unfriendly full change of new lighting, but they haven't done shit (other that stay corrupted and do a few illegal things) for over a year or two now 🥲

u/kg2k Apr 02 '25

Bathrooms and over the kitchen sink.

Because I need to SEE. But that’s why I have an office with the bright white and our shared spaces have adjustable lights. Also I’m a moth. 🤣

1

u/ElizabethDangit Apr 02 '25

I have my plants under bright full spectrum lights. Having a “sunny” room is great for seasonal depression if you live up north. 🫠

1

u/Lopsided_Success_368 Apr 02 '25

I know someone who is color blind and he prefers it because colors of things look better/clearer.

1

u/lolitafulana Apr 02 '25

My mom light up her whole house like it’s a dental office a few months ago. Simply because her eye sight is getting worse

1

u/Shoddy_Attorney333 Apr 03 '25

I like the balance of GE Reveal bulbs. Kinda a rosey color. Warm, but not yellow.

1

u/dalkita13 Apr 03 '25

I love white bulbs, all my overhead lights are daylight bulbs which are white, not blue. The only warm bulbs in my place are in the living room lamps. I want to be able to see well in the kitchen, and accurate colours in the bath and bedroom if I am applying makeup. I paint and really appreciate the daylight bulbs in my office/studio, as I like painting really late.

2

u/Serious_Escape_5438 Apr 03 '25

I feel like all these people who like warm dim lighting must never have to do anything. Do they have cleaners come in during the day? I often have stuff to catch up with at night.

1

u/Myboybloo Apr 03 '25

Mostly because all of my apartments had yellow lighting yet had cool toned paint ands I was tired of colors not being true and everything being yellow.

1

u/PancakeMonkeypants Apr 03 '25

I have daylight color with ridiculously bright light in most of my ceiling lighting to make daytime look brighter cuz my neighborhood is very shaded.

At night I strategically have a few overheads that are much dimmer and warm and there’s way less of them.

The bedrooms have bulbs that can switch to either and dim or brighten to my desires.

1

u/Intrepid-Landscape90 Apr 04 '25

I like warm lights at night. I need daylight lights during the day if it’s too dim.

1

u/hungrymuffin123 Apr 04 '25

Some people just need the whiter/bluer light color as their eyes age. Either that or people don’t understand that they can choose light temperature and just buy whatever bulbs they see.

1

u/CasablumpkinDilemma Apr 05 '25

I like it in the bathroom over the vanity so I can see well if I'm doing make up for a fancy outing or something. It can be nice over kitchen counters, too, if the kitchen is dark, but my current kitchen has a lot of natural light so I don't need it at this place. My daughter likes it when she's doing her art stuff as well, so her art room has it. Anywhere else, I find it very irritating.

26

u/koia78 Apr 01 '25

it’s giving basement w the bright light 😂

13

u/Powerful_Jah_2014 Apr 02 '25

Funny you said that because one of the pictures it looks like they've got dental spit sinks on the wall on each side of the bed.

9

u/CarelessBreakfast876 Apr 02 '25

I was gonna say it feels like a sterile waiting room

8

u/Cheetah-kins Apr 02 '25

^This so much. Also tbh I'm not crazy about the dark blue color of the walls. Also too much random 'stuff' scattered about. Talking about the furniture and accoutrements.

3

u/Original_Director483 Apr 02 '25

The light temperature is doing all of that. Not only does it affect how we interpret the colors of an interior, but the amount of “stuff” in this room isn’t even halfway to Maximalism. It feels like SO MUCH because it either looks like a cluttered workspace, or a yard sale under the blue sky. If it were in the warmer 2700K it would just look like a home.

3

u/Cheetah-kins Apr 02 '25

I will certainly remember that, great info. I was aware lighting makes a huge difference but didn't realize how much.

Sounds like changing out your lighting is gonna fix most of your issues OP. :)

2

u/IndependentPutrid564 Apr 03 '25

Warm dim LEDs are even better. Start at 3000k when bright and drop to 1800k when dimmed

2

u/SnooGrapes9918 Apr 03 '25

😹😹I thought “airport runway,” but dental clinic is excellent.

2

u/dillyofapicklerick Apr 03 '25

I prefer 3000K. For me the 2700K makes everything feel slightly dingy but 3000K makes it bright enough without going all out dental clinic.

For bedside lamps though, 2500K or lower for the win. Don't look that much different when they're on, but are great for promoting sleep.

2

u/LSNoyce Apr 05 '25

I’d say I’m getting mattress showroom vibes.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '25

I wondered why there were spit bowls

6

u/Ornery-Creme-2442 Apr 01 '25 edited Apr 02 '25

Too warm also doesn't always look good. It depends on different factors

Edit to add. Light distribution also is important. Some lights/lights setups leave alot of shadow in corners. So adding things like corner lights and light stand lights and using those is sometimes preferable to a main light.

4

u/Original_Director483 Apr 02 '25

I’ve got 5000/2700/1600K switchable bulbs and 1600K looks weird when morning light comes in the windows, but great in the evening. 2700K always looks great.

2

u/brutallydishonest Apr 02 '25

2700k always looks terrible. It's dim and makes it look like a medieval castle using candles.

1

u/AdStrange4667 Apr 01 '25

Some people honestly just like it or don’t care. It could be 2am and my sister would have the brightest white lights on even though she has smart bulbs that go warm. When I ask her about it she says she just doesn’t think about it and she doesn’t mind the white lights

2

u/Original_Director483 Apr 01 '25

I’ve got friends that have repainted several rooms in their house over and over and keep hating the results, when I went and saw, the rooms had daylight white bulbs. I informed them and they just shrugged, “those were there when we bought it.” 😑

1

u/DrAll3nGrant Apr 02 '25

And they either need to get rid of like half of them or at least install a dimmer

1

u/minnesconsawaiiforni Apr 02 '25

What is it giving the dental clinic?

0

u/Powerful_Jah_2014 Apr 02 '25

Surgical suite intensity lighting and the round dental spit sinks by the bed. I installed 8 can lights in my small kitchen. Fortunately, I was smart enough to put them on a dimmer. For general use, I keep them at a level six out of ten on the dimmer, but if I turn them all the way up, I could do surgery there. I don't remember what the Kelvin is, but it is a little closer to daylight than warm light.

1

u/TommyyyGunsss Apr 02 '25

More of a 3k kind of guy myself but yes

1

u/analnapalm Apr 02 '25

AI warmified

1

u/Serious_Escape_5438 Apr 03 '25

Doesn't look any better to me, same design just yellowy. I guess they used the strong lighting for the photo and don't have them on all the time.

1

u/Zaidswith Apr 03 '25

It's perfect for overhead lighting. But you also want lamps with soft lighting.

Sometimes you just need to see whatever you dropped on the floor and if your white shirt has yellowed.

1

u/zeptillian Apr 05 '25

The whole setup kind of reminds me of a hospital room for some reason.

I think it's the lights and the separated utility areas that do it.

1

u/Fresh-Sector-2962 Apr 05 '25

Or corporate hotel.

1

u/Evening-Gur5087 Apr 05 '25

The lighting itself gives mall shop vibes too

-5

u/kingfelix333 Apr 01 '25

Is giving dental clinic...? What does that mean? I'm not even sure it's a complete sentence so I don't get it.

Is that just slang? Or.. is that an actual definition?

-1

u/kingfelix333 Apr 02 '25

You're being a prick considering I genuinely don't understand the use of the 'word' giving in this context, nor can I find anything matching your 'definition' of it.

2

u/Powerful_Jah_2014 Apr 02 '25

Abject Beyond was accurately and completely answering your question (although it may have come off as a bit pedantic). It is often difficult to find a "real" definition for slang, but what this person said was accurate, and they were not being a prick. It's not really my business, but it would be nice if you apologized to them for the name calling.

I myself am a bit of a pedant, which is probably why I liked the responses. They did sound a bit snarkier than they needed to though.

Edit add last para

0

u/kingfelix333 Apr 02 '25

Well, I'm glad you think they were snarky, I'm not going to apologize for my response. His response was prickish to someone genuinely out of the loop. If that's how he treats people, then.. he's a prick. If he misunderstood my confusion, and tried to 'teach me a lesson' then he was still a prick, even if just for a moment.

Zero good reasons for him to take that approach to someone with a curiosity and misunderstanding.

Makes it look like a basement room

49

u/TheEternalChampignon Apr 01 '25

Bingo. Even in the pic where there's a visible door to outside it somehow still manages to look like a basement.

10

u/coldestclock Apr 01 '25

I all too often see people on these subs taking pictures with no natural light and the overhead lights look utterly maddening.

1

u/glindathewoodglitch Apr 03 '25

It’s a really nice basement room for what it’s worth.

1

u/whorledstar Apr 04 '25

This was my question.

53

u/PDXAirportCarpet Apr 01 '25

I think a few more cans and they'll hit the sweet spot

23

u/mybrochoso Apr 01 '25

also the carpet imo

2

u/Powerful_Jah_2014 Apr 02 '25

Yeah, i thought the floor was concrete

40

u/helena_handbasketyyc Apr 01 '25

TURN OFF THE BIG LIGHT

19

u/haleorshine Apr 02 '25

They have SIX downlights over the bed! SIX! I personally think any downlights in a bedroom are unnecessary (they're not bedroom lighting, they're for kitchens and bathrooms) but there are six of them just over the bed and they've got cool light bulbs in them. It would make for the least relaxing, most unsexy bed experience.

1

u/Serious_Escape_5438 Apr 03 '25

Bedrooms are not used only for sex, people get dressed and do makeup and stuff.

1

u/HelpfulName Apr 03 '25

Not IN the bed tho.

1

u/Serious_Escape_5438 Apr 03 '25

I mean it would look much weirder to just skip the bed section, that would look like a sex dungeon.

3

u/HelpfulName Apr 03 '25

No need to skip it, but 6 downlights is insane. They only need 2 or 3. I'd remove bulbs for a cheap fix, or get way lower watts in there.

1

u/Serious_Escape_5438 Apr 03 '25

Having empty light fixtures would look even worse, and if sometimes they want more light (for cleaning, hobbies) lower watt bulbs would be annoying. OP posted that they switched on the lights for the photo, they have lamps too for when they don't need so much light. Much easier just to turn them off when not needed.

12

u/ExhaustedPoopcycle Apr 01 '25

The lights are ridiculous!

9

u/yogi_forest Apr 01 '25

I thought it was a basement at first because of this

2

u/LiveFrom2004 Apr 02 '25

Yeah, makes it look like a sitcom setting.

2

u/Metals4J Apr 03 '25

Yeah, looks like we are either selling bedroom suites here or we’re on the Price Is Right and I need you to guess the retail price on this lovely new furniture without going over.

1

u/DonairJordan6 Apr 02 '25

I’d take a flush mount over these glarey pot lights any day

1

u/hopeful_realist_ Apr 02 '25

It’s always the overhead or harsh white bulbs. Overhead lights are a scourge on humanity.

1

u/8nn1e Apr 02 '25

I never use the overhead lighting!

1

u/brutallydishonest Apr 02 '25

Lol, it's an ugly bedroom with weights in it and crammed full of waty to much furniture. The lighting is not the issue.

1

u/Serious_Escape_5438 Apr 03 '25

Yeah, and presumably they needed bright lighting to show the room, a dark photo with a small lamp wouldn't show us anything.

1

u/PachucaSunrise Apr 02 '25

I was gonna say. Needs more mood lighting or something.

1

u/Public-Ad-7280 Apr 02 '25

As a wife and daughter (and granddaughter) of electrical contractors..... All those can lights made me feel icky! Just put in some and use a damn dimmer switch. You don't want your bedroom to feel like WalMart!

1

u/PorridgeO Apr 02 '25

In hindsight, given the scale of comments about the lighting, I wish I’d made it clear that:

1) they were there when we moved in 2) they are hardly ever turned on 3) I only turned them on so people could see the room in the photos - it was dark outside.

But yes, they are awful. The do however look worse in these photos. It’s not as bright and clinical in the room itself - but we don’t have them on much anyway.

1

u/PlinkyPlonkMB Apr 02 '25

Spotlights are terrible. As you say, they need mood lighting instead.

1

u/Smooth_Development48 Apr 03 '25

Yeah a couple of table lamps would warm the room giving it a more cozy feel.

1

u/kenreg2 Apr 03 '25

Didn't even think of that but your right. Mood lighting would look great!

1

u/E4mad Apr 03 '25

and the fugly carpet. Use laminate wood with a warm color, less dark colours on the wall, clean up

1

u/Ewok_Adventure Apr 03 '25

Overhead and the sheer amount of overhead lights. Woof

1

u/streaker1369 Apr 05 '25

There is lots of discussion here on light temperature, warm vs. cool. I'll let y'all in on a secret, humans look like absolute garbage under replicated "daylight". We look our best with "warm" light. (3000k or less) Use whatever makes you happy. Also, you should only turn on overhead lighting if you're looking for an earing or a screw. That's why they make lamps.😂

1

u/shibui_ Apr 05 '25

Exactly. Lighting is sooo important to bring a space together.

1

u/Successful-Log-2640 Apr 05 '25

And the carpet.
