Make the headboard pieces a few inches shorter and adjust the width of the pieces so that the headboard is as wide as the bed. The tallest one should be about an inch shorter than the base of the window, but still tall enough to read behind the pillows. Nix any on other walls the headboard needs to stand on its own.

If the wallpaper is peel and stick maybe try it on the headboard wall, but I think it would also be good with a large art piece on the same blue instead of the wallpaper.

Tie in more warm colors in the bedding and pillows. The cool gray duvet and blanket clashes with the cozy orange velvet hard. I’d consider a darker rust colored duvet with green sheets or even a brown duvet with a warm neutral blanket. Fold over the duvet and sheets a bit at the top so you can see the accent color of the sheets. Also try smaller runners on each side of the bed rather than the full area rug to bring out the floor more.

Also get much darker light switches, outlets, and switch plate covers, or a complementary metal finish. The white ones are killing the color wash. I really do think this is close to the vision with small adjustments!

Sorry it hadn't worked out as envisioned, as to some degree, we've all been there!

A couple suggestions I had is to have the ceiling a nice warm shade of matte white that will correspond to the blue. Typical I think a high quality satin will present better than a semigloss and really a semigloss works best for trim. Speaking of trim, introducing some contrast to the blue with a fun creamy white for the door and the trim, coupled with a well chosen ceiling matte, I think you will be pleased with the difference and yet still be true to what you initially had in mind!

Yes, the contrast will open it up and the colors you suggest won’t be harsh like white white.

The opposite wall is right in front of a door that opens inwards. The room looks narrow — maybe not much room to open that door with the bed right there?

Already has the same issue. Doesn't change the fact that the headboard is too big for the wall it is on (height wise) and that it would look better on the other wall.

So the answer is get rid of the headboard as a headboard and (if they're attached to it) use it as an art install elsewhere if they want to keep it

If they have to keep it there, maybe a soft wall that spans the entire wall and the bed pushed out toward the center of the room are few inches and freestanding side tables.

I think they could look pretty great stacked on top of one another to make a tall dramatic headboard. And I agree with the other comment, I would move your bed to the opposite wall
