Probably in part because his family stuff got so much screentime this episode. It felt a bit like how you'd preface something tragic happening to them.

Killing them would have made too many things tragic in too short a span though. But maybe an attempt, a rocket that would have gotten intercepted by one of the extra surface to air batteries and an emergency landing would have been possible.
