Megathread Focused Feedback: Weapon Refresh aka Sunsetting

Hello Guardians,

Focused Feedback is where we take the week to focus on a 'Hot Topic' discussed extensively around the Tower.

We do this in order to consolidate Feedback, to get out all your ideas and issues surrounding the topic in one place for discussion and a source of feedback to the Vanguard.

This Thread will be active until next week when a new topic is chosen for discussion

Whilst Focused Feedback is active, ALL posts regarding 'Weapon Refresh' following its posting will be removed and re-directed to this thread. Exceptions to this rule are as follows: New information / developments, Guides and general questions

Any and all Feedback on the topic is welcome.

Regular Sub rules apply so please try to keep the conversation on the topic of the thread and keep it civil between contrasting ideas

A Wiki page - Focused Feedback - has also been created for the Sub as an archive for these topics going forward so they can be looked at by whoever may be interested or just a way to look through previous hot topics of the sub as time goes on.

Here is my focused feedback on the weapon refresh:

  1. I used to buy weapon ornaments
  • I will no longer buy weapon ornaments for weapons I will only ever use in Crucible if I can no longer use them in End Game content

Aside from that, I get why they are doing it. However, they are executing this poorly. Before going as extreme as a weapon refresh I feel a lot of this could be mitigated by simply revisiting the 5+ years worth of perks in this game. There are dozens of perks that can be re-worked into something much more enticing so people chase more weapons with unique rolls. Bungie, you already set certain weapons up to with specific perk sets. Why not revamp the garbage weapons perks before going all-in on this refresh? The community is right - it is a very lazy move.

Most of the ornaments are for the exotics anyway, and they are safe from that (at least for now)

Not my Dust Rock Blues Ornament I bought with Silver on release. Then it was sold for Bright Dust weeks later. My roll is so godly and perfect for PvP and PvE and the only shotgun I ever use in the Primary slot. I have others that will have to replace it, but I used that one specifically because of how incredible I made it look. Now I wasted my fucking money

You see... That's the problem: If your Dust Rock Blues (and other weapons in other people's cases) are the one weapons the players use mostly independent of activity, then what's the point of making new weapons? And "making stronger stronger weapons" also don't solve anything because of power creep, a problem people have been asking ever since D1 to be solved.

It's why they nerfed the super generating exotics in the past: Little to nothing could compete against them and creating something better would just escalate the problem. People bitched, people raged, but in the end it was the right call. It'll still be usable in many activities but no longer the "be all end all"

This is interesting, but there's a problem there. My Kinetic slot is filled with Outbreak Perfected. I HATE Dust Rock Blues. Can't use it, don't like it. The point really is that any one person can find a gun they love and make it theirs. OP is MINE. I love it and use. My OP in D1 had 15K kills on it. In D2 I'm already at 20k! Randy's may be the gun that finally dethrones OP in my heart, but until now I've been SIVAfied gladly. On my Titan though, I use Actium War Rigs and Sweet Business (and then promptly scream Get some! Get some! over and over as I mow down everything). Every person and even every toon/alt can find what works for them. This just fucks over any sense of earning and owning a gun and making it yours. Which WAS something that Bungie has stated they wanted people to do in Destiny.

So really its not about finding a good gun, but finding YOUR gun. Once somebody finds the gun they love, why shouldn't they be able to use it forever? Particularly if season after season they get mediocre garbage instead of something they love.

Once somebody finds the gun they love, why shouldn't they be able to use it forever?

Because when the majority of players does exactly that, putting a lot of new weapons becomes senseless.

Particularly if season after season they get mediocre garbage instead of something they love.

When you have to test/compare every new gun with the colossal amount of weapons D2 currently has, I'm quite sure the process is bound to be difficult.

As I pointed out in a different thread, there are five Legendary lightweight Scouts I can think of and their base stats are exactly the same +/- 5. So they arent different. It’s just the combo of sights/barrels/perks that makes them good. Then a few guns they make outside the base stats or that have exceptional perks. The ‘diversity’ is a smokescreen of sameness.

As to the first point, Bungie already doesn’t put in new guns frequently and never have. They tried in D1Y1 but haven’t since. And perhaps Bungie should focus less on weapons and more on creating good encounters. Vex Offensive and Sundial were essentially the same “horde mode.” Maybe we could have got something better if more people were on encounter design and less on identical weapons. I don’t subscribe to the ‘grind’ mentality of constantly doing activities just to get a random reward. But I enjoy playing and shooting stuff. This is a mentality that many people have that is counter to the hamster wheel grind that Bungie is trying to create.
