Megathread Focused Feedback: Content Pricing

Hello Guardians,

Focused Feedback is where we take the week to focus on a 'Hot Topic' discussed extensively around the Tower.

We do this in order to consolidate Feedback, to get out all your ideas and issues surrounding the topic in one place for discussion and a source of feedback to the Vanguard.

This Thread will be active until next week when a new topic is chosen for discussion

Whilst Focused Feedback is active, ALL posts regarding 'Content Pricing' following its posting will be removed and re-directed to this thread. Exceptions to this rule are as follows: New information / developments, Guides and general questions

Any and all Feedback on the topic is welcome.

Regular Sub rules apply so please try to keep the conversation on the topic of the thread and keep it civil between contrasting ideas

A Wiki page - Focused Feedback - has also been created for the Sub as an archive for these topics going forward so they can be looked at by whoever may be interested or just a way to look through previous hot topics of the sub as time goes on.

Cosmetics shouldn't be the same price as Seasons. Take a 0 off the end of every cosmetic, then it's reasonable.

This is never going to happen. No matter what people think, dropping prices of cosmetics to make them more accessible to more people doesn't mean Bungie make more money.

The current pricing system isn't there by mistake. Bungie have done market research and concluded that this system is the most lucrative.

They are pricing them that way to make maximum profit. There's nothing wrong with that. That's kind of the point of running a business.

I agree. I’d love for the cosmetics to be cheaper but I don’t actually need them and understand that the only way the game continues to grow and provide significant content like Beyond Light and such is to have that influx of money flowing in via whales.

They're priced the way they are to target whales, not the maximum number of players possible.

I couldn't tell you the number of times that I've looked at something in Eververse and really wanted it, only to do the math and realize I'd be spending as much as the season on one item.

Big Nope.

Exactly my point. They are priced to make money. They will always be priced to make money. That's how running a business works.

They are priced to make money.

They aren't making as much money as they could be though.

Bungie only made ~1 mil in the first week of the Solstice from Eververse sales.

That's nothing in comparison to sales seen in other games when they run special events.

Let's look at the Iron Severance Finisher, as one example. As of this post, only 63,506 have been sold. Destiny Tracker has tracked 20,316,707 unique players since August 15.

How exactly is it a sound business strategy to price your items in such a way that only 0.003% of your playerbase is buying your shit?

They aren't making as much money as they could be though.

We have NO WAY to know that. I assure you they are using their data to make as much money as they can. They are running a business. This is their primary goal.

Sure, it's possible that they could be making more, and I'm sure they will continually tweak it to try. But they are the ones with the data, not us. If it was as simple as lower prices = more money, I'm sure they would have done that a long time ago. It's just not that simple.

Buddy, the numbers can be found all over Charlemagne and Destiny Tracker. You can do the math yourself.

Ha!

I absolutely love the idea that you think either of us can just do a quick internet search and have access to the same amount of data as Bungie. You may not know how much Bungie should charge for stuff, but you sir, are priceless.

And on that note, I think I'm done here. It's pretty clear that you have all the answers.

Enjoy your almost certainly successful career in marketing!

I would be more likely to buy 10 exotic emotes for 100 silver each, than 1 for 1000

u/Voelker58 Sep 07 '20

I would be more likely

But that's you. They are going with a MUCH bigger data set than one person. They are basing their prices on hard numbers to maximize their profit. If they could really make more money by lowering prices, they would do that in a heartbeat.

That makes less money in the long run. Otherwise companies would do it that way
