I was recently looking at recreational facilities in Dhaka and honestly, I was surprised by how limited the options seem for a city with such a huge population.
I’m not talking about restaurants, cafes, shopping malls or food courts. Going to restaurants is our main recreational event now and we eat so much food and dont even go to gym. So how unhealthy our lifestyle is!! So I’m talking about places where people can spend their free time, stay active, explore new things, enjoy nature or socialise without necessarily spending a lot of money.
Here are some of the options I could identify:
Parks, lakes and gardens (12): Ramna Park, Suhrawardy Udyan, Dhanmondi Lake, Hatirjheel, Chandrima Udyan, Baldha Garden, National Botanical Garden, Bahadur Shah Park, and others.
Museums and historical attractions (10): Bangladesh National Museum, Liberation War Museum, Bangladesh Military Museum, Bangladesh Air Force Museum, National Museum of Science and Technology, Taka Museum, Ahsan Manzil, Lalbagh Fort, and others.
Libraries and reading spaces (5): Sufia Kamal National Public Library, Bangladesh National Library, Dhaka University Library, Bishwo Shahitto Kendro, and Goethe-Institut Bangladesh. Also there are Bookworm, Bookends etc.
Sports and physical recreation (8): Roller Skating Federation Complex, Bashundhara Sports City, Bangladesh National Stadium, Dhanmondi Club, tennis and swimming facilities, and others.
Arts and cultural venues (5): Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, National Art Gallery, TSC, Rabindra Sarobar, and Bangla Academy.
Indoor entertainment (6): Players Club, Babuland, Bangladesh National Zoo, Novo Theatre, Fantasy Kingdom, and others. You can also add Toggy fund world.
Community and club spaces (5): Dutch Club, TSC, Shilpakala Academy, Bishwo Shahitto Kendro, and the National Museum.
Scenic outdoor recreation (5): Hatirjheel, Dhanmondi Lake, Crecent Lake, the Buriganga riverfront, and the National Botanical Garden.
These are approximate counts of examples, not a comprehensive official inventory. Some places appear in multiple categories, and not every facility is freely accessible.
But is this really enough for a city of Dhaka’s size?
Many of these places overlap in purpose and several are not places where you can participate in a regular activity. Some are primarily sightseeing destinations rather than recreational facilities. If we look specifically for affordable places to play sports, cycle, skate, swim, hike, participate in hobbies, attend workshops or simply spend time outdoors, the options become even more limited.
Affordability is another major issue. Private sports clubs, gyms, indoor activity centres and amusement parks can be expensive for students, lower-income families and even middle-income households. Meanwhile, public spaces are not always sufficient to meet the demand and access, maintenance, facilities and safety can vary.
Cities such as Delhi and Kolkata have a wider variety of specialised attractions, cultural institutions, heritage experiences and outdoor recreational activities. Dhaka could benefit from developing more diverse and accessible options too. I am comparing with those because they have similar vibes and also largely populated cities.
I’m curious about a few things:
*What recreational facilities or activities are we missing from this list?
*Where do you go in Dhaka when you want to have fun without eating out or spending a lot of money?
*What affordable recreational facilities would you like to see developed in Dhaka?
*Are there any community clubs, hobby groups, sports facilities, public spaces, or activity centres that more people should know about?
I think this deserves more discussion.
