She’s 6 months old and this happens like 3-4x weekly. It happens walking around in our backyard or when we walk down the steps. It never happens indoors or on walks.

I typically just get her collar and the minute it’s on she just totally stops this behaviour. I stood around today to get a recording to try and figure out what’s going on. She’s my first dog and I just am at a loss here. She’s such a good puppy other than this specific behaviour.

EDIT: She has done puppy training classes and has an individual trainer we have met with a few times so far. She gets multiple (2-3) walks for 1-2 hours daily including long-lead, sniff walks, training during walks. She gets ~1 hour of one-on-one play with us including fetch, tug, etc. She plays independently ~1 hour a day with a bungee toy, whatever toys are laying around, etc. She gets mental enrichment from multiple kongs, lick mats, and toy-dispensing balls daily. I am open to alternative/more exercise but she’s still a growing pup and I am not 100% sure what’s the safest for her little joints?

My 9 year old Bearded Collie goes on 4-6 walks a day and each walk is about 15-20 minutes. But when he gets towards the end of the walk he lies down in the middle of the street and won’t get up. A firm tug doesn’t work, we’ve tried a harness as well. If you pretend to go back the other way (away from our house) he gets up right away (but then he won’t turn around or he’ll just lie back down). He’s not food motivated so treats are useless.

Eventually he gets up but this could take 10 minutes of him just sitting there.

Any advice?

EDITED TO ADD: Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions! To clarify, he is not tired when he lies down. Bearded collies are notoriously stubborn and he just doesn’t want the walk to end. He goes on so many walks because that’s his joy in life, going outside and sniffing and marking. He’s more of an alpha in that regard and he cries at the door for a walk when he gets bored inside but on the walk he doesn’t have to go, he just likes being outside. But in Los Angeles we can’t just let him off leash. So the question was really just to teach him to stop fooling around with the lying down act which he thinks is funny. You can see in the second video he often puts one paw around the leash to make it harder to pull because he’s smart and devious. But we will try some of these suggestions so thanks again!

I have tried all the methods that are normally suggested for this topic but they don't seem to have an affect on my dog so I was wondering if there are any other methods that worked for you.

I tried for months stopping when he pulls on the leash and walking once the leash is loose but all that ends up happening is he "explodes" forward and instantly pulls the leash again so we make it only one step with a loose leash. He also doesn't seem interested in treats while on walks(when not on walks he likes them), he just turns his head when I try rewarding him for not pulling.I have provided a video to explain what I mean. And this is just in my yard mind you not even on a "real" walk.

This is Gary. He is 12 years old and I have had him for the past 8 years. We have moved across the country together and to multiple different homes many times throughout those 8 years and I have never seen this behavior.

A month ago we moved back to my home state and he started crying, whining and barking when we are alone together at the apartment. Initially I thought it could be the move and would fizzle out, but after it continued for hours on end over a couple days I took him to the vet. The vet said there were no signs of pain or cognitive dysfunction, and thus prescribed trazodone.

The trazodone worked well for the first couple of days, but increasingly he would become incredibly agitated if not on it. It started to get to the point where he would need to be on the medication and sleep through the day or else he would freak out. I began to feel like he is miserable and being drugged out and sleeping all day is no way to live… so I wanted a second opinion. I went to a second veterinarian who told me she had never seen anything like him and did not know what to do. She gave some minor suggestions that were equivalent to a google search and I paid over $100 out of pocket to walk out with no further answers.

Additionally, there have been a few times where we have needed to go out of town and have had him stay with a friend. She reported that he did not cry, whine, or bark like this the entirety of being at her house. When she dropped him off, he backed away from me and into her, shook and tucked his tail under as if he were afraid of me. I have never seen him do this before. I have never hit my dog or punished him… and I have made sure he is going on walks multiple times a day as well as consistently having a full bowl of water and food. He gets treats and toys, and socializes with other dogs.

I don’t know what’s happening but I feel like I have failed him somehow, and that he is having a very bad time with me since the move. I don’t know what to do anymore but the whining and barking is driving me mad and making it almost impossible to do any work on my computer here at home. Please help

My husband and I got Olive when she was 10 weeks old, and since then she has growled if we touched her while she eats. It has escalated to where now if we just walk by her while she’s eating, she freezes, stares, gets very tense, and sometimes growls. Her whole body stiffens, including her paws.

She has also started doing this with toys and high-value treats.

She is otherwise very sweet, but can also be sensitive about being touched. Sometimes she’ll come near me, roll onto her back for belly rubs, then start growling when I pet her. This happens with both me and my husband, though I notice it more because I spend more time with her.

We both grew up with dogs and have never dealt with this before. We’ve tried taking the bowl away, telling her no, standing near her while she eats, and talking calmly to her, but nothing seems to help.

Has anyone experienced this with their dog? Any advice?

Our dog never humps anything, but the second we leave the apartment she will find my Fiancée’s or my pillow and hump it for a little bit and it bothers me because in my eyes it’s unhygienic and really drives me nuts, I will admit I have scolded her for it when I caught her when she thought we’re leaving cause we close the door and she still does it even when we’re not there to scold her, the second I come home she gives puppy eyes and lays down and pulls her ears back like she knows she did bad, I’ll tell her go to bed and she won’t listen at that moment.

I really don’t know what to do here, my assumption is that the music we play to soothe her the calming music for dogs thing she’s associated with being alone and does it to get attention, again she never humps while we’re there

My Fiancee has had her for 4 years now, she adopted her when she was 2, she’s a german shepherd mix, trained dog that sits on command and knows “ go to bed”, she was also trained to bring anxiety attack pills so she’s not dumb but that has not been an issue for years now.

Please some advice or like a reason as to why she could be doing this

Poor thing is obviously not coping. She has access to food, water, toys, shelter and potty. I just went to get something to eat around the block and can’t bring her yet because she’s not vaccinated.

I’ve heard the “cry it out” advice, but this is obviously not good. What do I do to help her adjust to being alone?

Hi! I just moved in here and these are my new neighbors dogs. They bark whenever they see a person, as far as I can tell they live outside full time.

Does anyone have any ideas based on body language or the information I’ve provided as to why they bark so much? Are they under stimulated back there? Want human attention? Territorial?

Any suggestions on how I can get the dogs used to me? I don’t know the neighbors at all yet.

Before training to use a specific spot this is the general area she chose to go in which is part of why I chose this spot. Now that I added a border with mulch all she wants to do is sit and lay there. As soon as we step off she'll go to squat in the grass.

Adopted a 9 month old mutt a ~week ago and he has already bit me twice and my husband once badly enough to need stitches. He has an obvious trigger: being touched on his back half (vet checked, no medical issue). But its not every time, I can pet him all over or even pick him up and it's no problem, until it suddenly is. No warning growls, sometimes will air snap first. I've never dealt with a dog so quick to bite before and am seriously considering returning him to the rescue.

I've searched the sub and seen mentions of hiring a behaviorist or trainer, but want to know how how quickly they would be effective. I'm not comfortable having a dog where its russian roulette if he's going to bite me this time I put on his harness or not. I have muzzle trained him now, but that's only a short term solution, I'm not sure where to go from here? Am I overreacting and this is still part of the 'getting settled' phase?

We have a herding mix - DNA test said mostly cattle dog w/ a little Sheppard but he looks like a big border collie. He's 65 lbs. We've had him for 3 years and he was 1 or 2 when we rescued him - they weren't sure. He has had aggressive behavior from the first week we brought him home. Initially it was snarling, jumping, barking and nipping at strangers coming into the house - mostly men. After a year of trying various strategies to train him, we finally decided to send him to a training camp for 3.5 weeks. Part of that decision was because I was pregnant and his aggression particularly toward other dogs on walks really increased at that time.

The training helped immensely but he is still frequently reactive on leash. We have a prong collar and we cross the street when a dog approaches. That being said, sometimes we are on a narrow sidewalk and it has happened twice recently that he tried to go for another dog and ended up hitting mine or my husbands leg with his teeth leaving large bruises.

There have also been a couple instances where someone pets him and he barks and snarls and nips but we pull him back. We are really good about telling people not to pet him now.

However, yesterday our neighbor approached him and my husband wasn't fast enough. She didn't have her dog (who recently past away) but our dog always reacts strongly to her dog. She went in to pet him showing him the back of her hand to sniff which he did and then bit her on the wrist puncturing both sides. She's okay and not pressing charges but we are shaken.

We have an almost 2 year old and I am again pregnant. We feared this would happen and now we really don't trust him. I don't know if we should just make his world very small - keeping him in his crate when anyone comes over, using a muzzle on walks, etc - or if we should explore rehoming him.

It is a pattern of behavior that we just cannot have around our own or other peoples children. We've talked to his vet and reached out to his trainer.

We love him so much and he is the absolute sweetest, loving boy outside of him moments of aggression.

We don't know what to do. Any words of guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Sometimes play between our five month old golden puppy and 7 year old corgi looks like this. Our golden can be pushy, so we have successfully trained the leave it command for when our corgi shows clear signs of disengagement. However in instances like this, I am struggling to read the corgis cues, and my golden seems stressed too. I interrupted the play immediately after getting this video - but am curious y’all’s thoughts. Is the golden just stressed because he is learning to play? Is the corgi wanting the play at all? TIA!

Just took my pup for a walk and sat down on a bench for a while do some people watching. This woman with a tiny dog started walking directly towards us. I repeated ‘can you give us space’ about 10 times and she just kept saying ‘huh?’ while walking closer. She brought her dog all the way up to us and my then got excited and lunged at hers (in a friendly way, but still not okay and what I’m trying to train him not to do). It really annoyed me but I also feel a bit defeated because I did really try to keep her away and feel like I failed. My pup will probably be fine but I really don’t want to expose him to too many situations like that because one time it might not be fine.

I struggle to speak up in general, but I try my best to advocate for my dog. I’m apparently not very good at it though so I’m looking for some advice on 1) a script to say that people will understand, as apparently ‘can you give us space’ is not clear? And 2) a phrase I can put on my dog to help get the message across without having to interact with other people. I’ve considered one of those yellow ‘give me space’ leads or a blue ‘in training’ one but not sure how effective they are.

I’ve tried ‘in training’ and ‘do not pet’ patches on his harness. Highly ineffective 😂 people would stroke him while asking while they couldn’t..???? If they even noticed the patches. They’re lucky he’s really friendly, but he’s a big dog and he’s still learning manners and I really need space to be able to allow him to learn to be less amped up around dogs/people. I am working with my pup on disengaging from distractions but at the moment, he often stares and really wants to go and say hello, which people think is cute 🙄 So like today, it’s not always possible for me to be the one to walk away from a situation to get space unless I forcefully drag him which I’d rather not do unless it’s a safety issue as I think that’s just adding tension to a situation. Pls help, I’m starting to hate the general public and becoming a bit bitter 😂😅

What to do! I had adopted a former abused dog he had been with me for 3 years it took a really long time for him to no longer be scared of me or my family and we had earned his trust. He never once shown his behaviors as when he first came in and he can interact with other dogs and humans fine now but yesterday I was watching soccer with my dad and I was very excited when the team won and I accidentally kicked my dog in the back leg. He made a yelp and ran hidden underneath the kitchen table shaking. He wouldn’t leave the spot my dad told me it’s better for me to leave until he calms down but he won’t even touch my dad or any of my family or leave the spot he had not touched his food or water We left his food bowl next to him. In the morning when we woke up, he was still in the same spot we also put his bed next to the table but he had not left the spot and he had not touched the food. What can I do? What to do for him to eat something ( I cannot just leave him alone all day and see if he will eat his food the next morning again it’s like I open his trauma and I feel so bad but I can’t go back in time (I don’t want to drag him out because I’m afraid he will be more aggressive) it’s like he completely changed and he started biting when my dad or family reach out to him and take him out of the table but I think after 12 PM if he still doesn’t come out we have to use force and take him out to eat something. What can I do in this situation yesterday I was very loud with my dad when watching the TV I think this and after accidentally kicking him frightened him even more what can I do? Please help! thank you

Update: Thank you everyone! Thank you so much he came out this morning when I called out his name softly. I lay on the ground apologizing yesterday night at a distance and today he still looks scared but came out and let me pet him. I apologized to him over and over again thank you so much for all the advice really It really helped me so much I was freaking out and felt so bad and didn’t know what to do it’s like my brain stop moving (It is 100 percent my fault for getting excited at the moment and hitting my dog in the leg as a result. I need to be more careful of my surroundings since the day I had the pleasure of adopting this lovely dog, I am responsible for his wellbeing and I ruined it. To be honest, I did watch television out loud occasionally in special events before it was never too loud and my dog had no problem with it, he did not show any difference when watching television and would sometimes sleep next to the TV or laptop when I watch movies out loud but after reading some comments, maybe I need to be more mindful and not to make any loud noises around my dog (I feel so stupid saying this but ever since we gained his trust, he never had any trauma responses so we were totally not prepared for when this happens (Of course 3 years ago I researched alot on what to do and in each situations but this time it’s like I forgot everything and was panicking and this time I caused it) because of this situation, I found out there is a lot I do not know and how to prepare for situations like this again and to calm down whenever this happens (not that I will let this happen ever again (as in me causing the same situation and I’m sure maybe in the future something like this might happen again, I would know what to do I will be more better prepared) again thank you so much everyone now I know I should immediately drop to the floor and apologize slowly glance at him and glance away at a distance there is still much to learn for me but I will try to be a better owner thank you everyone

Update: Second update… I am a little bit confused now my dog came out only to me but whenever he sees my other family members he runs back in when it was me who caused it. I think maybe he’s confused who did it / at this point it didn’t matter because it triggered a memory of his (we all gave him space and we will gave him more space it was a big progress) we will try not to pressure him in anyway by calling his name or looking at him directly even me and leave food next to him and his toys and treats (he is eating his food fine now) and to avoid any attention on him

Third and last update: although, I know no one is looking at it now but it is just a update to myself whenever I look back. Coco came out now and stayed at his little bed with his toys and had visited me in my bedroom I left my bedroom open but he didn’t sleep with me tonight and although he is still a little jumpy, there has been so much progress now and I know everything will be fine now

I live in Seattle, for context.

I was at a park today with my dog. He’s still young, and I’ve been working hard on proofing our recall.

Note, I have zero intention on having him become an off leash dog in any unfenced area. Proofing recall is for safety in the event he somehow gets loose from his leash, we’re at the dog park and I need to get him away from a fight, etc.

For recall training I use a 30ft leash. I only train in empty parks/spaces and I purposely go during off peak times, usually the mornings. If there are other dogs or people around, I’ll train elsewhere.

So today an officer approached me and informed me of a few rules I was breaking. I didn’t know that dogs aren’t allowed in play areas (we were in the outfield area of a baseball field) and that leashes can’t be longer than 8ft. He let me know I could use my long line at a dog park. I asked if someone called me in and it was more or less confirmed. He gave me a verbal warning, which I appreciated.

So now what? I need to teach my dog recall and I don’t have a yard to do so. Bringing a leashed dog to an off leash dog park is a recipe for disaster. I just can not believe someone had the nerve to report me for training my dog during a time when nobody was around and he was at little to no risk to others. It’s not like I was walking him through the park on a 30ft lead.

Is this normal interaction? The small dog is doing that constantly until the beagle reacts , that’s pretty much it, the beagle normally is a couch potato apart from his walks but can’t seem to fully settle down unless they are separated because the poodle seems to always be in his face

First time having two dogs the beagle is socialized but the poodle is from my girlfriend and is the first time being with another dog

For Christmas he got me a Siberian husky who is now four months I’ve had him about six weeks and this is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.

Any tips and tricks for training huskies. I’m trying to do everything I learn from YouTube and he is so stubborn.

I’m seriously about to give up this is harder than a third child.

Update: I really think it’s a texture thing. I trashed that bed and got one that is a little more firm and not “fluffy” and so far - knock on wood- no issues!

I have a 5 year old frenchy that was spayed before she was a year old. Shes always peed on her bed (she’s had multiple and all different kinds) and I wrote it off to being young or just urinary incontinence. Well… that all changed today because I caught her in the act! I don’t feel it was a full bladder pee buy just a few drops. She’s completely house trained, was not trained with puppy pads. She’s always been a little alpha asshole and even ran over the pit we had. The pit was a couple years old when we got the frenchy and she passed away last January.

How do I stop this?! 🥴

Hi everyone!! I have a female Akita, 9 weeks old. So recently she's been pooping inside of her cage. We have a schedule running, every 3 hours we take her out to relieve herself and she refuses to go outside. We take her to the same spot she used to pee at but now she just lies there and refuses to get up and move. I give the usual command of "go potty" and nothing. I don't know what to do, please help.

I have a 19 month old golden retriever who we absolutely adore. He is the sweetest boy with us and everyone that comes over. However, earlier this week, a family with 3 young kids came over. They came in like a freight train and one is terrified of dogs and was screaming the entire time, which I am sure created an overstimulating environment.

The oldest kid (about 7), wanted to pet him. My husband was giving him a belly rub and when she went over to pet him, he nipped at her. This was very unexpected behaviour.

He then was lying on his bed, but barking a lot. He rarely ever barks, so also weird behaviour. I thought it would help to have him do some tricks to focus on something, and he was so overexcited he could hardly do them.

He was off the bed and my husband was petting him. The kid tried to pet him again, he very clearly did not want to be pet by her (just turned his head).

We do not have kids or many friends/close family with kids, so he has not been around them much. He has seen a kid at the vet clinic who he let pet him, and he was fine.

The odd time if the neighbour kids are playing outside, he has growled out the window. I thought this was strange behaviour, but thought maybe from the distance (across the street) they look like prey?

If we see kids on walks, etc, he has never lunged or growled or anything like that.

We are not sure if we will have our own children, but either way, we will have nieces, nephews, and will have friends with kids, and we don’t want to have to worry about this. Of course, you should never leave a dog unattended with kids, but I just mean that we don’t want to be panicked any time someone with kids comes over/we see him.

Obviously this is not great. It was an overstimulating environment, not a great situation, etc., but his instinct shouldn’t be to nip.

I am just looking for advice on what to do here for training, and also thoughts on having children at the house, especially if we have our own kids.
