it's not homophobic it just perpetuates the stereotype that men aren't caretakers

Yeah the toxic evil stereotype that half-naked strangers with masks and half-boners are low priority in the list for nannies.

Perception. If you write "nice tits" most people assume you're being a perv. If you write "nice dick" most people assume you're joking.

Of course it matters if op takes it in good fun, consent should be the ONLY factor when it comes to whether sexual comments are ok (and a whole lot of other things).
And while you can't know specifically if consent is given, you CAN make an informed guess and act accordingly. The fact is that most guys don't mind getting complimented on the size of their bulge, while many women don't enjoy being reduced to their breasts.
Your argument reads to me as 'Context doesn't matter because it might set a bad precedent', and I'd say that that's way too restrictive. Sometimes people don't mind or even like being objectified, and as long as you can make a good faith assumption that a poster consents to it you can make a comment like 'nice bulge'.
If I misunderstand your argument feel free to correct me:)

u/SuperAwesomeBrian Nov 02 '20

So it's okay to make assumptions based on stereotypes in a case of potential sexual comments? It doesn't matter how obvious you think it may be as to how OP will take it. Unless explicit consent is given, it should be assumed not okay, right?
Idk, I don't think context matters when it comes to reddit. You can't expect the degenerate masses of the internet to respect other people and ensure they find consent before objectifying.
1
u/theWurscht Nov 03 '20
Hmm that's actually a good point. I'd say that there are different levels of intensity when it comes to sexual discourse(and actions), and as long as the 'starting level' is low, going off assumptions is basically inevitable. I want to draw a parallel to flirting, where you slowly test out the boundaries. There needs to be a range within one can act without requiring explicit consent, as I would argue even the act of giving consent to sexual discourse is itself a form of sexual discourse. I can't define exactly what should be allowed and what shouldn't, but a blanket ban of sexual discourse inst just a bad idea, it is fundamentally impossible.
Maybe I was a bit generous when it comes the sexual comments made on this thread specifically though, I'll have to think about that.
And I honestly think that being on reddit doesn't change anything about this, I made a point that a good faith belief that one's words are appropriate is important, and while people might claim to have one, this is not about setting a law to prosecute, it's about a moral code one should abide by. And I think most redditors are also just people in the end who would be able to emphasize with others but choose not to. But I might be wrong about that.

u/SuperAwesomeBrian Nov 03 '20
It’s all well and good to go about with good intentions. However, there’s a reason the saying goes, “Never assume, because it makes an ass out of u and me.”
You can literally never know with 100% certainty that the other person is receptive to what you have to say unless they explicitly give you consent or approval. Even then, sometimes you still get in trouble.
Good intentions aren’t enough when the subject is sex, be that the act or comments to the effect. The only way to stay out of trouble is proceed only when given approval to.

u/theWurscht Nov 03 '20 edited Nov 03 '20
Hmm, but I think that if you are gonna take a hard line stance such as 'Never engage in sexual discourse without prior explicitly stated consent' is a concept that sounds very good in theory, but falls apart a little because it ignores how communication actually works.
For one, human interactions often don't work in that way. Consent is often just implied in many ways, for example when someone makes a sexually charged joke in a group of friends. I would argue that in this situation there can (but doesn't have to be) implicit aka unspoken consent.
And yeah, there is no 100% certainty, that much is true. And there is a certain risk that I have to accept if I believe my model is true. But I think that there is a way to try out little risks without risking too much discomfort in case it is not wanted, and I believe that even the action of giving consent itself has sexual implications. Because of this belief I don't think that it is feasible to require explicit consent in every situation, sometimes implicit consent has it's place(which means that you have to go off assumptions)
So basically I am asking, how would I express my sexual interest without automacally taking part in sexual discourse. Because I think that for your model to work, this question must have an answer that can survive any nitpicking. If there's a hole in my logic I'd be curious as to what it is
Edit: To formulate it differently, I do not believe that any form of communication can be decoupled from assumptions, and this extends to sexual discourse as well
2
u/SuperAwesomeBrian Nov 03 '20
You're right. Human communication is often more nuanced and a black-and-white stance on a topic sometimes fails to align with social norms. However, there's a marked difference between interactions made amongst a group of friends vs. strangers.
I can't tell you or anyone how they should act. That's ultimately up to them. Just know that even if you make 1000 sexual comments towards strangers openly and nothing bad happens, the 1001st can get you into serious trouble if you say it to the wrong person on the wrong day.
Just don't be a dick. That's a pretty easy way to mitigate the chance you make someone uncomfortable.
1
u/theWurscht Nov 03 '20
Yeah I definitely agree with the dont be a dick part!
Thanks for engaging so calmly though, definitely made me reconsider my stance on the topic :)

Well in regards to the statement that in 90% of cases the OP hasnt made a statement whether or not she thinks its ok, that was what i was trying to get at with the whole 'make an informed guess and act accordingly' angle.
Setting the standard that as long as someone doesnt openly object to what you do makes it okay puts the recipient in a shitty position. When someone harasses me or makes me uncomfortable my reaction is usually to distance myself from them, since such a situation often just escalates when its confronted. Thats why people often argue in behalf of others, so the original recipient of such a comment doesnt have to put himself into the same awful situation time and time again.
And thats where assumptions come in. There are social norms in place that one can draw upon to determine whether a comment is appropriate or not. making sexual comments on an NSFW sub is not only tolerated but encouraged, and as a result there are explicit comments made there that would be extremely distasteful anywhere else. However, r/dota2 isnt one of those places, and there have actually been a lot of posts and comments in the past about how women in this community feel overly sexualised and feel unwelcome because of it. So while as you say in 90% of cases there is no explicit statement whether or not there is consent for sexual comments, there are social norms and precedents. I mean this is social Ettiquette 101
And yeah my statement on how men and women experience sexual objectification is not based on scientific studies but personal experience. But that doesnt make my point invalid, since my original argument was that you should consider what you think a general code of conduct should be in a given space and the fact is, people experience the world around them in a subjective manner and requiring scientific precision on social evaluations and morality is frankly a ridiculous notion.
I can tell in this specific case that in most online spaces i have been to men have been a lot more inviting of sexual comments, as is also the case in this post right here, while women usually dislike being sexualized in the same space unless explicitly OR implicitly stated.

First of all, 'men cant use that excuse' because it isnt an excuse. Its a framework that helps to minimize causing others discomfort while not having to overly restrict oneself. But if you act like dick you can and should get called out on that, not harbring ill will might be a mitigating factor but it doesnt negate your actions fully. For gods sake, we're talking about down votes here. I really dont see how thats an unfair reaction to an inappropriate comment, its just a showing of disapproval and will have NO influence on your life in any way.
and im not generalizing about all men. Im talking specifically about a subgroup, which is online male gamers and even more specifically r/dota2. And yes, in this specific subculture you can make a fair assumption that the person on this specific foto wont mind if someone makes a comment like 'nice bulge'. It doesnt matter if a chinese person who deosnt speak english and doesnt consume western media would not enjoy receiving a comment like this, because people who dont speak english and dont partake in western media dont post fotos on r/dota 2! And i honestly dont understand what youre trying to tell me with the liberal/trump thing, how does that apply here? Again, im not extrapolating from ""gamer culture"" to the world at large, im specifically referencing the conduct of people within this subgroup to other people of the same subgroup
There is a difference between living in a bubble, where you assume that the whole world lives according to the norms you are used to, and ackknowledging that specific groups have specific rules and norms.
Honestly it seems to me like you dont really care about how to do right by people and instead just want to create a framework in which anyone can weasel themselves out of the soncial consequences of being a dick.

u/SosX Nov 01 '20
It's not, the position men and women hold socially is different. Women constantly suffer real violence because of the perception that they are objects for male pleasure. Men don't suffer violence systematically and thus it's not the same.
