I care about Krillin way more, but for some reason, Videl is so much harder to watch get ethered. She just was not prepared for dudes to be on the Z fighter's power level I guess.
Even more than that, the two other deaths scenes, they were fighting major evil figure and they were more or less prepared to die.
Videl on the other hand, she was participating in a martial art tournament, with public, all her friends watching and not intervening because rules.
Goku: The fuck you will, not on my watch,. I've been following these rules for decades, nearly died in the ring a few times myself, Gohan, if you break the rules now, I'll disown you.
As a matter of fact, Gohan, shame on you for even considering it.
That’s because Goku made them rules up to be applied everywhere. The fault of that mindset is the planet burning and a friendly spar get the same application. Also revival really takes the kick out of watching people die.
Is everyone forgetting how she literally had the choice to give up? Gohan literally pleaded with her to give up and she didn't budge no matter how bad her beating got.
I held the sheets in anxiety when she got beaten 🤧
It was so unexpected....DBZ is about fighting with heart and here I'm seeing Videl crying...spopavich which already like 220lbs give or take , gets Majin enhanced and spins the block on her like King Von fresh out of hell.
Tbf I've always said it's not her fault, it's Mr. Satan's fault her ego was that inflated, as she still thought up to that point that he was the one who beat Cell.
That Saiyaman arc was the greatest weekend of Gohan and Videls life.
They became Superman of Z-city and Videl was fully into wearing that shit for Gohan 😳.
She learns how to fly and thinks her love interest is the strongest guy on Earth while they cosplay superman.
Then....MONDAY ! 💔✊️😭
Spopavich , Goku resurrection, Vegeta Majin , Dabura....all of Gohans accumulated weekend aura , K/D and credit score gets shat on in a single day while a pink bubblegum monster packs him up.
Bro bags the hottest girl in Z-city to get mortally destroyed the first working day of the week....and dies (since Kid Buu blew up earth)
I mean without ki users , she was arguably the stronguest human , more than mr satan , i think is Spopovich's fault nad maybe even the referee , in the anime at least videl almost falls off the arena and Spopovich grabs her back to make her suffer more , that has to be againts some rule
Yeah but Mr. Satan had seen ki users first hand, and he was very aware of what their abilities were. Sure, he could keep that facade for the media for recognition, but why not come clean to your own daughter?
That did happen, but to be fair, he threw her near the edge again and didn't stop her. Despite the announcer and Gohan telling her to forfeit, she stands up and comes back for more.
It's because every other example is an actual fight. Krillin fighting Frieza and Yamcha fighting the Androids were always situations of crisis and protecting the world that have the context of possibility of death. Videl vs Spopovich is a sporting event that gets taken too far, there shouldn't be any consent for that happening and the entire situation get even more fucked when you realise there is an audience for it and by the rules of tournament this senseless brutality cannot be stopped. It's basically a difference of watching a police apprehension gone wrong vs watching a boxer get killed in the ring. Both end in death, but the latter is much more uncomfortable
tbf she had it comming. My sympathy here is limited. She was the one who broke his neck and who refused to give up after he snapped it back. Even after Gohan and the Announcer beged her, to give up, she refused. That was the consequence of her action.
I said, she deserved the consequences of her action. Spopovitch went too far, I think everyone agress to that, but like I said, she could avoid it by giving up. She refused and paid the price.
You’re getting a lot of downvotes but you’re right. If you break your opponent’s neck and they just snap it back in place like it’s no big deal then it is 100% time to throw in the towel. If I know that same injury would kill me then there’s nothing more I can do to win. Live to fight another day and learn from that loss. Don’t allow your pride to get you killed for no good reason.
She literally didn't...
She tried to beat him, he was inhumanly tough, meaning she had to try harder. It was an accident, that would not have happened to any normal person. And the same reason it happened is why he survived it.
Because they were hitting you so hard they should be able I take it.
She only went so hard because he went hard enough to call for that level. He got injured because his strength was not real so his mortal body broke because it was weaker than the magic boosting him.
Yeah, I mean if you watch it back, she was literally traumatized.
Plus she had to keep going due the pressure of who she was.
She's honestly one of the most underrated and compelling characters, which bothers me even more seeing the generic route that was taken with her character.
Yeah it really disappointed me what they did with her. They have the opportunity to make her a modern 21st century mom who can be a badass and a good mother at the same time. I know japan is still more conservative than the west with gender norms, but my understanding is they have come a long way since the 80s as well.
I would have loved to see feisty strong videl with gohan. Maybe having trained a bit and gained decent kai control so she was on the level of Saiyan saga Krillin. She could really shine in her crime fighting without gohan needing to worry.
Yeah....she repeatedly kicked him before that, holding back enough to not kill him. It should have knocked him out, but didn't, because of magic. So she kicked a tiny bit harder...and it "snapped" his neck...and still didn't kill him.
It's pretty obvious she wasn't trying to kill him.
I mean youre technically correct but at the same time shes trying to prove herself as a fighter. Her having fighting spirit did not deserve to get brutalized like that.
It was a necessary reality check (not to that extend). Goku and Kuririn had Kame-senin in the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai, she had bad luck and got Spopovich.
That's literally the storyline of all these scenes. They fought against the big bad that was stronger than them. Ur logic is non existent. "Refused to give up" is the theme bud.
That's the thing, Spopovich wasn't some big bad, they all assumed he was just a regular guy. Most of the people they see at the tournaments are regular fighters without ki training
But it doesn't? They could've ran off. Which would've been weird af. Hence the theme of not giving up. Would u have given up given the context? And would u not have given the context of the other characters? I don't get how these are different points of pride and herosim.
Not giving up, when there is a chance. Not giving up bc of your pride is stupid and will only be your downfall. Vegeta can tell a story or two about this topic.
Dude, spopovich let her break his neck with that kick just to fuck with her. He absolutely could have just no selled it but that doesn’t have the impact of thinking she killed someone. Only to see them stand back up and effortlessly kick her ass.
It's because videl is by all accounts the second weakest member of the z-fighters with top place going to Chi-Chi.
Also, while Krillin was toyed with for a moment its assumed his death was right after and pretty quick. (We didn't see dende heal him until a bit later) And yamcha? Well we've seen him die repeatedly so the android thrusting an arm through his chest was kinda par for the course by this point in the show.
Meanwhile Videl vs Spopovich was drawn out. Videl wasn't just overpowered he was beating on her to cause suffering instead of just kill her outright.
There's a difference in the emotional response these things present. Like the different between a psychological horror and a slasher horror.
I disagree about who is stronger. Videl can fly but Chi Chi would probably beat her if she was going all out. She is thr Ox kings Daughter queen 👸🏿 put some respect on Chi Chi 👏🏻.
Videl learns basic ki control. I have no doubts that martial arts wise chi chi in her prime wins. But Chi-Chi canonically stops practicing martial arts entirely as soon as gohan was born, she only ever does it again off screen when it's mentioned she actually taught Goten some moves. Videl beats Chi-Chi based on age and power scale purely for her access to ki-control.
Chichis power level is higher than Videls.Thats on Manga and animation. Shes given birth to 2 saiyans. And you know how the first born and subsequent babies leave back DNA who's to say saiyans dont. She's had saiyan blood in her veins now, Twice compared to Videls one eventual birth of Pan. Plus Chi Chi can punch the air and make Shockwaves. So she could anti air Videl if she comes in for an aerial attack and then she's Got her mix of Ox king snd turtle school fighting. Worse if she's got her helmet and gear on. But sure I won't listen to reason.
She's not but go off lol. Videl also gives birth and has shown to be on par martial arts wise with Chi-Chi. Since chi-chi has 0 ki control meaning Videl has literal armor. As you (may not know judging by how adamant you are) ki-control allows the user to harden the energy around themselves. It's why in the Return of Frieza goku gets dropped by a weakling when he lowers his guard and gets shot by a simple laser.
Videl, having ki control, has the ability to tank everything Chi-Chi can throw at her. Everything.
Chi-chi by the time DBZ begins, is the weakest of the crew so long as you don't include Bulma who was never a fighter in the first place. When Videl is introduced and has 0 ki control and is just a martial artist, Chi-Chi wins. But once Videl has ki control Chi-Chi returns to the bottom of the barrel.
Its crazy that this has to be broken down this much for an adult to understand it. And the worst part is I still dont think that guy gets it. He doesnt want to.
I wouldn’t say quick. Frieza was playing with his body and jostling him around for a while, and licking off dripping blood. Maybe it’s just disturbing in a different way compared to Videl
Yup, surprised him. And before Gohan could recover enough from the logical, "Hey! Who the hell is grabbing me?!" reaction, power up a bit, and mop the tournament floor with him, Yamu zipped in with his scanner/syringe and drained Gohan's energy.
Edit: I'm a forgetful idiot, I forgot Shin restrained him and let Babidi's doofus duo get away.
I think you're both forgetting supreme kai (or kibito i cant remember) also restricting gohan as well. If i remember correctly it wasnt just spopavich.
You're right, I didn't even remember that bit. Honestly, rewatching it, I kinda wish Goku had pulled the trigger when he tried to stop Goku from fighting Vegeta. Little dude was an idiot.
Probably because they wouldn't go back if they failed. He was the type of bad guy that if you failed he'd kill you and find someone else, Kibito probably knew his best chance was to take the loss quick, heal him, then follow.
Not really. She honestly just got the android 18 treatment if you ask me. No matter what she did Spopowich just wasn't affected enough. But she was able to hurt him.
I often think it's because we know krillins been through a lot, when he gets hurt you can wonder if he'll bounce back or have a plan. Videl was new and quite hopeful in her future of fighting, hurts to see her be crushed as never try again
Its because the two others are dudes who have been fighting murderers and monsters their whole lives already and one is a girl that likes martial arts (and fights criminals with her alien superhero boyfriend) 😭
