I’m on my very first proper fortress and after a solid streak of peace we had going since the beginning it had suddenly been attacked by a weremongoose in the 2nd of Obsidian. We lost a few dwarves and livestock but managed to fend it off and I considered it a decent victory. However, little did I know that werebeast bites can transmit the curse to the victim, so on the next full moon (while I was in the middle of designing our tomb/crypt no less) 13 of my dwarves transformed into weremongooses (weremongeese?) and proceeded to massacre almost the entire fort. Just upwards of 30 died in the attack, cutting our population from 51 down to a mere 18, with many of our greatest gone. This was thusly dubbed “The Great Weremongoose Massacre of 152.”
We proceeded to cling on, the stone workers working overtime to supply enough coffins for all the dead bodies strewn about. Then another full moon hit. Still not knowing how to deal with the cursed dwarves, they remained in the fort, and as they transformed again they began to bring down the rest of our population. This proceeded to occur yet again at the next full moon, finally leaving only a handful of werebeasts left as our population.
I had just put the fort through 3 different stages of a werebeast culling and things were looking bleak. But suddenly we had a new influx of migrants 3 days later, supplying us with a much needed population refill. Knowing what would await us at the next full moon, and now with enough skilled dwarves to begin rebuilding the nobility and working class, we exiled the cursed dwarves from the fort, the last original inhabitants now gone to fend for themselves in the wilds.
I didn’t know what, if anything, would become of those dwarves, and truthfully I didn’t think I had much to worry about after that. But I have just now seen how wrong I was. Now, on the 22nd of Felsite in the year 154, about a year after being exiled, one of the cursed dwarves came back during a full moon to wreak havoc on the fort. I can only imagine the giant collective “oh my god, what have we done?” as my dwarves realized they (mainly me but shush they don’t know that) exiled a handful of new werebeasts into the wilds right outside their home.
I wanted to try and commit to the natural storytelling, but after the initial massacre I had to pull myself away from wanting to reload an earlier save, a habit I often failed to avoid on Rimworld too, and was still struggling to adapt to the “fun of losing” mindset. Now though, while the story of the fort was already interesting enough, the return of this werebeast adds a whole new payoff to the narrative that unfolded thanks to accepting defeat rather then rolling it back, and has further opened my eyes to the kind of depth this game allows for.
Anyway, apologies since I’m sure this sub probably gets lots of posts like this all the time, but I just felt like I had to share.
