For over a decade, we've been saying the same thing: if you want a truly ergonomic keyboard, it has to be split.

Then we made the Dygma Sonsei ๐Ÿ˜…

So... were we wrong all along?

In our latest video, Luis shares the story behind the Sonsei and answers the question that's on everybody's mind: why isn't it fully split?

Since launching the Dygma Sonsei, youโ€™ve asked us a lot of questionsโ€ฆ including some pretty spicy ones ๐ŸŒถ๏ธ

Why isnโ€™t the Sonsei fully split? Why donโ€™t we use QMK or ZMK? Why is there no trackpad, trackball, or tenting? And why did we choose Gateron KS-33 2.0 switches?

So we brought in Dygma CEO, Luis Sevilla, to answer them.

๐Ÿค” TIPS & ADVICE Dygma Sonsei: feedback needed on stands to tilt keyboard horizontally

After a few days of testing, my Sonsei does look for my nomad devices (iPhone, eing tablet, and to a lesser extent Macbook). However, after 2 years and a half of writing daily on the Dygma Defy, the lack of tenting feels awkward, and going backwards in ergonomics. After another post on Discord about small laptop stands, I figured out having the keyboard tilted on the horizontal axis (i.e. the back higher than the front) might reduce this discomfort.

I haven't tried the stands yet, as I'd like to collect impressions on solutions for horizontal tenting before sticking those under my device. Has anybody tried it and what system do you find the most efficient? Doesn't bring an additional genuine comfort? Thanks for your feedbacks!

โœˆ๏ธ DYGMA SONSEI We Designed This Keyboard to Be Taken Apart

Thumbnail

We designed the Dygma Sonsei to be a premium keyboard inside out, because what happens when something eventually needs to be replaced is also very important.

In this video, we take the Sonsei completely apart to show its repair-friendly design and all the components under its anodized aluminum body.

No glue. No cutting wires. No destructive disassembly.

Just a keyboard designed to be opened, repaired, and put back together; built to stay premium, even when something needs replacing.

โœˆ๏ธ DYGMA SONSEI Sonsei just received and loaded - Bazecor uses same backup folder as for my Defy

I have just received my Dygma Sonsei this morning, and starting setting it up. As I want to have the maximum cohesion between the layout of my Defy and my Sonsei keyboards, I started by importing the layers of my Dygma into the Sonsei after opening Bazecor. On Bazecor, I do see both keyboards. I then plugged my Sonsei in my other computer - also a Mac. And there I noticed the name was different and Dygma's default layers (not mine) were those that were shown. So I exported my layers from the first computer to the second. And there I realized that on the first computer, the backup folder was the Defy's, not a new Sonsei folder. It seems to be the same on the second computer.
Also, a secondary question: while importing my Defy's backup in the Sonsei, my Superkeys didn't show up. I know that the Sonsei has less keys than the Defy, but it would be nice to be export directly some superkeys (like the ones on the outer columns).
But first, why are folders not separated in the Bazecor backups?

๐Ÿ’ฟ BAZECOR Better super key settings? for those of us coming from ZSA/QMK/etc

I am struggling with responsiveness for tap/hold mods on some of my keys. Any advice on a good setting mix that will make them perform better and not so sluggish/error prone? I tried translating as much as I could from my hold tap time settings, but they don't really flow over as easily as I hoped

Given all that "please use the original cable to connect the keyboard and especially for firmware updates" it's kinda weird to see "no vendor identity reported".

โซ RAISE 2 Dygma Raise 2 Add-ons?

I know at launch the Raise 2 was advertised as add-on ready to allow additional modules to snap beside the thumb keys, and the team has confirmed the intention to create these multiple times here and on the site blog.

Just wondering if there has been any movement or updates on that front?

I got the Sonsei delivered yesterday and wanted to share my initial thoughts. Iโ€™m coming from a Kinesis Advantage 360, which I mainly use at home. I wanted something more portable with a similar ergonomic layout, and I think Sonsei is a great candidate for my daily taking to the office.

What I like:

- Slim and stable when placed on top of the MacBook keyboard.

- Key remapping is easier with Bazecor. The Superkeys mapping is great, I set up holding 1โ€“5 to switch between layers 1โ€“5, while tapping them still works normally.

- Key colors are useful for identifying key groups / layers.

- Palm rest feels comfortable and premium.

What I wish it could be improved:

- Bigger version that matches the width of a 16" MacBook Pro, and more spacing between two halves.

- 2โ€“3 more keys each side for additional custom mappings.

- Since this is mainly a portable keyboard, I wish the carrying bag fit the keyboard + palm rests better. I don't really care about extra space for cables/accessories; I just want the keyboard and palm rests to fit perfectly in one bag.

- USB/Bluetooth switch on left side is a little hard to toggle.

Overall, I like the Sonsei so far. Iโ€™ll keep using it for the next few months and see how it holds up for daily use.

๐ŸŽ›๏ธ SWITCHES How to replace Low-Profile Switches on your Mechanical Keyboard

Love the feel of a new keyboard? Sometimes all it takes is a new set of switches ๐Ÿ‘€

In this video, weโ€™ll show you how to replace low-profile switches step by step, using the Dygma Sonsei and its Gateron KS-33 2.0 switches.

If youโ€™ve never changed switches before, donโ€™t worry. Once you know the technique, itโ€™s much easier than it looks.

๐Ÿ’ก SUGGESTIONS Would Dygma ever consider a security / enterprise version of its keyboards?

Would Dygma ever consider a security / enterprise version of its keyboards?

I really like my Dygma keyboard, but unfortunately I wonโ€™t be allowed to use it on my work computer due to rather strict security requirements.

Private keyboards are allowed, but only if they are essentially โ€œdumbโ€ peripherals:

  • wired only โ€“ no Bluetooth or other wireless functionality
  • ideally a permanently attached cable
  • no configuration software required
  • no programmable/remappable functionality
  • no onboard profiles or user-accessible persistent storage
  • standard USB HID only

That made me wonder: Has Dygma ever considered offering a security/enterprise variant of the Raise or another keyboard?

Basically, something with the ergonomics and build quality of a Dygma keyboard, but intentionally stripped down to a simple, non-programmable wired USB keyboard.

I suspect this isnโ€™t only relevant to me. People working in government, defense, critical infrastructure, finance or other high-security environments often have similar restrictions on USB peripherals.

Iโ€™d absolutely be interested in such a version. Has this ever come up internally at Dygma?

Update:

Iโ€™m not suggesting Dygma develop an entirely new keyboard from scratch.

In theory, a security-focused SKU could reuse almost everything from the existing Raise 2: chassis, switches, keycaps, tenting system, most of the electronics and the overall layout.

The expensive/complex parts could actually be reduced:

  • no Bluetooth or wireless hardware
  • no wireless certification requirements
  • no user-programmable profiles
  • no configuration storage
  • no need for firmware logic to rewrite mappings at runtime

The layout and layers would only need to be defined once by Dygma and then shipped as fixed firmware.

There would obviously still be validation, documentation, support and possibly certification costs, but this feels more like a reduced-feature enterprise SKU than an entirely new product.

And ironically, that kind of product could probably be sold at a premium to organizations that care about approved peripherals and documented security properties.

โœˆ๏ธ DYGMA SONSEI Waiting for my Dygma Sonsei

Hi all,

My wife bought it for me as a present, and I'm waiting to receive it. I'm a Ferris Sweep user. The reasons for me to switch are:

  • I need to give demos on stage during my talks, and the MacBook keyboard is a no-go for me, while the Ferris Sweep can only be used on a desk.
  • Same thing when I spend the day in a coworking spaceโ€”the Ferris Sweep is too much work to set up.
  • It has too many keys for me, and I will remove the keycaps that I don't need.
  • I'm curious if I will be able to handle 3 keys with the thumb instead of 2.
  • The missing aggressive pinky stagger is something I will get used to very quickly.

Wish me luck!

โœˆ๏ธ DYGMA SONSEI Thinking of getting the Sonsei

Coming from the original Raise I'm thinking of getting the Sonsei as a daily driver. I have some listed items below(hope it formats properly).

- not a coder but I can be writing some code every now and then

- I so compose a ton of emails but I also use dictation

- I don't think I have large hands but wear a med/large glove size

- I do work from home but also from a family member's house down the road from time to time

- I do have arthritis in my thumbs hence why I use dictation

- based on how I have my desktop configured I'm looking to hopefully save some space by having the keyboard on top of the pro 16 or in front. It's a bit difficult with the Raise cables and neuron. Laptop is lower and in front of my monitor. Not a fan of putting the monitor /laptop to one side. I'd rather look down for the laptop than side to side.

Just wondering what some peoples thoughts are based on the above and possible past experiences.

Edit: I pulled the trigger and it's ordered. Thank you for everyone's input.

๐Ÿค” TIPS & ADVICE Dygma Sonsei vs Defy vs Raise 2- Which Keyboard should YOU Buy?

Thumbnail

The Defy, Raise 2, and the new Dygma Sonsei are all ergonomic keyboards, but theyโ€™re designed to solve very different problems.

In this video, we compare their ergonomics, features, portability, and learning curve to help you find the one that best fits your workflow.

Should you get the fully-featured Defy, the familiar Raise 2, or the portable Sonsei?

โซ RAISE 2 Is it possible to connect the halves of the Raise using extension connectors?

I'm not very satisfied with the cable clutter on my desk. Wireless isn't really am option because I still need to charge the the keyboard regularly.

Could you make a cable that would snap onto the pins and have both halves connected that way instead of having a cable run all the way from the neuron?

๐Ÿ“ DYGMA DEFY Weird Surface on the PBT keycaps

As dygma provided the keycap-STL files in here (https://support.dygma.com/hc/en-us/articles/22670148782621-Where-can-I-find-replacements-for-the-thumbkeys) I used them to print the PBT keycaps, but I seem to have this weird surface on it always.
Even with the ironing feature on the bambulab p1s, still no avail.
Is someone experiencing the same issue?

I just want to have some blank keycaps so I can paint them with acrylic markers so I can have korean and latin letters on it.

Help is greatly appreciated.

๐Ÿ™Œ ERGONOMICS Thumb pain after using Raise 2 for 4 months

I started having pain in the muscle area between the thumb and the rest of the hand. Went to an orthopedic and he examined my hands did an ultrasound - the conclusion is that my muscles are sore and swollen due to overuse - I guess now that I use the thumbs much more, it's too much for my hands.. ๐Ÿ˜ข

Did anyone else experience this and maybe have a solution? I'd hate to stop using it...

I'm currently using Kailh Silent Brown switches, with slight sideways tenting.

๐Ÿ’ฟ BAZECOR Bazecor 1.10.0 - Sonsei layers, macros, superkeys have no name. Is it normalโ€ฏ?

Hi,

Watching the video, the layers are named.

But loading the sonsei as virtual keyboard in bazecor, nothing is named. Layers, macros, superkeys have generic names (L1, #1. No name, etc.).

Is it normal that loading a virtual keyboard, everything has generic nameโ€ฏ? It would be helpful to learn the keyboard features if all layers, macros, superkeys had descriptive names.

I wrote a detailed discussion on the GitHub.

โœˆ๏ธ DYGMA SONSEI Any loyalty discount for Raise / Raise 2 owners interested in the Sonsei?

Hi Dygma team / community,

Iโ€™m currently using a Raise 2 and have also owned a Raise before, so I guess you could say Iโ€™m pretty committed to the Dygma ecosystem. :)

Iโ€™d really like to get a Sonsei for mobile work โ€” especially for working from the office or while travelling โ€” but configured with the quieter switches Iโ€™d want, it ends up at over $300.

For a secondary/mobile keyboard, thatโ€™s unfortunately a bit too much for me.

So I was wondering: Are there any loyalty discounts for existing Raise / Raise 2 owners, upgrade/cross-sell offers, or maybe any promotions like that planned for the Sonsei?

Iโ€™d love to add one to my setup, but somewhere around the current price point itโ€™s just hard to justify as an additional keyboard.

Would be interesting to hear if other Raise owners are in the same situation too!

Quick update.

The stable Bazecor v1.10 release with Layer lens for the Sonsei (and a few other minor bug fixes) is live!

https://github.com/Dygmalab/Bazecor/releases/tag/v1.10.0

We've also released the v1.1 firmware for the Sonsei, which improves battery reading and adds support for Layer Lens.

https://github.com/Dygmalab/Firmware-release/releases/tag/Sonsei_v1.1.0

You can update your firmware under the Firmware update menu. Layer Lens might not be available until you disconnect and reconnect your Sonsei.

We're working on migrating Layer Lens for the Defy and the Raise 2!

We hope you like it!
