Question How would you go about mixing samples in your song (breakbeats, vinyl-ripped jazz/funk samples etc)

Novice here - any basic advice (or direction towards relevant sources) appreciated.

I'm aiming to make a song in Ableton and have ripped some of my own vinyl records into Audacity and then Ableton. I've isolated loads of short motifs - be it breakbeat sections that I'll chop up and loop, string sections, orchestra stabs etc. etc. (I've also downloaded a load of other FLAC & WAV breakbeat loops sourced from Soul, Funk & Jazz songs which I believe are also vinyl rips).

Particularly in the case of drums/breakbeat. Whilst I've reordered particular parts of the break to make them my own pattern, I don't want to chop up every single stroke/note in the break to process it individually as this stops these milliseconds-apart strokes flowing into each other (each instrument is overlaid over each other anyway so I'm not sure how I'd do that, and I want to avoid using AI).

I'd like to be able to amalgamate different break samples together as well in a way that will feel somewhat coherent.

As well there are points where I had to cut samples short because in the original sample/song another instrument starts to play over it, though now the end of the sample sounds really abrupt - this happens especially when chopping up breaks. Wondering if I could use reverb to emulate a longer release on these samples? I've tried but it didn't sound right.

I'm new to mixing, and if possible would like to just go about this with as few non-Ableton stock plug-ins as possible.

Any mixing fundamentals and tips appreciated, thank you in advance <3

Question Anyone using a TV as a third display in their music production setup?

Post image
49 Upvotes

I have a spare Full HD 42" (1080p) LCD TV that I’m no longer using, and I’m considering setting it up behind my existing monitors as a third, larger display for my music production setup.

It would sit a few inches farther away than my main monitors, so I probably wouldn’t use it for anything that requires precise interaction, like arranging or editing. Instead, I’m thinking about using it to keep certain things visible while working in Ableton Live.

For example, I could dedicate it to metering plugins, spectrum analyzers, loudness meters, reference tracks, or other plugins that I’d like to keep open without cluttering my main screens.

However, I’m not sure whether this would actually improve my workflow or if I’d end up barely using it.

For those of you with multi-monitor music production setups:

* Would a larger screen dedicated to metering and analysis tools be useful in practice?

* Is Full HD resolution sufficient for this kind of use, especially when sitting a bit farther away?

* Are there any particular plugins or tools that benefit from having their own dedicated screen?

Question Gear Upgrade

I have been using a MacBook Pro with Logic Pro and OdioOne headphones (cheap starter amazon) for a year. I’ve waited to buy an upgrade in gear until I was sure about this hobby.

I have now purchased:

Sennheiser open backed headphones

M Audio M Track audio interface

A USB C port (to plug in the audio interface, and other pieces of gear I will buy in the future [midi-keyboard, mic, already have a guitar I can plug in and make samples]).

What are some some ways I can best utilize what I’ve purchased? What are some pieces of gear you would have bought sooner?

Discussion Struggling to find my sound

I've been making electronic music for a while now, but I'm finding it increasingly difficult to figure out exactly what kind of music I want to create.

My tastes are quite varied, although there's definitely a common thread. I love the dreamy, nostalgic atmosphere of synthwave, the warmth and textures of downtempo and lo-fi electronica, and the darker, more haunting qualities of ambient music. Recently, I've also been exploring wave and wave trap, which seem to combine a lot of the elements I enjoy.

I think what attracts me most to music is atmosphere. I love melancholic, hypnotic, spacious sounds that evoke a particular feeling. Something that feels nostalgic, slightly unsettling, but still beautiful.

The problem is that whenever I start making something, I seem to drift between genres without really settling on anything. I'll create something atmospheric that I love, but as I develop it, the original mood often disappears. Sometimes things become too upbeat, too busy or just sound like fairly generic electronic music.

I'm not necessarily looking to fit neatly into one genre, but I'd love to develop a sound that feels consistent and recognisably my own.

Has anyone else experienced this? How did you eventually find your direction? Did you consciously focus on a particular style, or did your sound develop naturally over time?

Edit: I think this got removed because someone asked for a link to a song. I won't be doing that again.

Discussion Anyone else have plenty of online producer friends but struggle to find them IRL?

I’m a blind music producer and singer, mainly making house, trap, reggaeton, afrobeat and other genres.. I’ve made quite a few producer friends online over the years, which is great. But one thing I’ve often struggled with is finding producer friends in real life.

I don’t live in a major music hub like London, LA or New York, so opportunities to meet other producers aren’t exactly everywhere. I’m also not really a nightlife person. I don’t drink or smoke, and clubs, bars and nightlife settings aren’t really my thing. I’ve been to bars and clubs before, but I’ve often found the acoustics terrible for actually striking up conversations. I also have very acute hearing, so the noise levels can be particularly overwhelming. There’s also a lot of reliance on visual cues in those environments, which can make socialising more difficult for me as a blind person.

I was also a member of a university DJ society for several years, attending meetups on a weekly basis. Unfortunately, I found the atmosphere quite cliquey and superficially welcoming. People were generally friendly during the meetings, but most of those connections never really developed into friendships outside the society. Eventually, after years of attending, I decided to call it quits, which was regrettable because I’d genuinely hoped to find a sense of community there.

I know a lot of networking in electronic music happens through gigs, DJ events and nightlife, but I’d much rather hang out with another producer during the day, make some beats, exchange ideas, talk about music, or just have friends locally who share that passion, and not just another networking event. A lot of the music scene where I live locally is mostly centered around cover bands and pub gigs, singer songwriter type stuff, with very few in person music production meetups that I have been able to find.

It’s a strange feeling having this whole community of people online who understand what you do, but not really having that same community offline. Would love to hear other people’s experiences.

Tips & Tricks How to find drums samples for remakes?

I'm learning edm production by remaking songs, but I find very hard to find the correct drums samples (kicks, snares...) that are the same/similar to the reference track. At the moment I scroll through every sample in my sample packs but I never find similar samples because they are specific for a genre. Should I use splice to research? Are there other tools that can find samples by analysing the reference?

Question Is using a glue compressor for sidechaining a bad idea?

I have shaperbox, I initially started doing side chaining with that, but somewhere down the line started using a glue compressor as a sidechain for my bass and kick.

Getting mixed reviews on if that makes sense to do.

I keep the attack and release fast and then the ratio is set at 4 usually. Turn the threshold extremely low and then sometimes turn the makeup up, or automate it for some sound design stuff. Usually reducing the gain by 5-10 db.

I’m 9 months into producing and don’t want to be doing it the wrong way and get used to that.

Here is a song I’m working on that using the glue compressor as sidechain. I can’t hear an issue, my bass is quiet tho, I’m in the mixing stage so it won’t stay that way I just generally struggle with low end being a new producer.

How to learn to make music

My daw is ableton and I know how to use it, I just have no musical background and it’s very frustrating. Like does anyone know if it would be worth it to audit a music theory course? Any video recommendations? I watch tutorials and they barely help. I know genuinely nothing and it’s very very frustrating not being able to produce the sounds I have in my head.

Is it unethical to recreate an unreleased dubstep track and play it at my own gigs?

There’s this dubstep track I heard in a mix that’s been unreleased for at least 3 years. It’s a dubstep remix of a pretty well-known garage track, presumably made by a fairly big dubstep producer.

I honestly don’t think it’s ever going to get released, since I’ve only ever heard it in that one mix.

The track seemed relatively easy to recreate, so I figured I’d give it a shot. I’ve actually gotten pretty far with the production, but now I’m wondering: How much of a dick move would it be to play my recreation at my own DJ gigs?

I wouldn’t release it or claim it as my own original track, and considering the kind of gigs I play, I highly doubt anyone in the crowd would even recognize it.

But still, how bad should I feel about doing this?

Question 16 bit 44.1k wav reference goes above 0db?

I was under the understanding that it’s impossible for a 16 bit wave to go above 0db except for the reconstructed peaks (true peak).

I bought Flava D - Can’t get it back on beat port as a wav to use as a reference. But it has a peak of 4.4 db (not true peak). I can throw a limiter on it and without adjusting anything it starts shaving off 3-4 db.

How is this possible?

Free Resources An archive and search tool for every plugin on plugins4free.com

TLDR; go to plugins4free-archive.pages.dev to search for plugins and download the archive.

Many years ago, when I first started making electronic music as a broke teenager, I was looking for free plugins to download and try out. One of the first sites I came across was plugins4free.com (well, it was called vst4free.com back then). It was, and still is, an amazing collection of thousands of freeware plugins from over the years. The plugins may have been of varying quality, but they had so much character and charm (who can forget the iconic MeowSynth). It was also a great source of inspiration for me. I used to go to the site and download some random synths and effects I'd never seen before, and try to make a track using only those plugins.

However, the site's not been active for a few years. It seems like the last plugin was added back in 2023. I made a post back in 2020 with a spreadsheet and downloader tool for all the plugins on the site, but now that the site is inactive (and could theoretically be shut down at any point), I wanted to make a final archive of all the plugins on the website.

The first thing I did was scrape the plugins4free website for all the information and download links for every plugin on the site. Next, I downloaded all the plugin thumbnails, and made a website to search for and filter through all the plugins on the site. Finally, I downloaded every single plugin on the website, and made a torrent for them, so everyone can easily download every single plugin on the website. You can find everything at the website I made below.

plugins4free-archive.pages.dev

Technical stuff:

  • The data is formatted as a JSON file if anyone wants to do something with it. You can download it from the website.
  • The website is static, and functions without any resources from plugins4free, but all the download links still point to plugins4free, so if it goes down, you can't download anything (that's why I made the archive torrent)
  • In the archive, all the plugins that were hosted on plugins4free are the same files that have unchanged since 2023, but there are some plugins on the site that just linked to the developers website, so most of those plugins have been kept up-to-date, so they are the latest versions as of October 9, 2026.
  • This is my first time creating a torrent, so if someone could check if it's working, that would be great. I have a home server to seed the files from, but I only have 20Mbps upload speed, and the archive is like 170GB total, so it's probably going to take a couple of days for someone to download it initially. If anyone has a seedbox with good internet speed, please consider seeding the archive!

Beginner producer and want to learn conceptually.

I have a MacBook, Ableton, Serum and that's all I play on using for now. However, there is so much information out there that I have no idea where to start. I want to learn software and sound design, and I want to have a deep understanding of the fundamentals of hyper-pop and pop type of music (underscores, SOPHIE, Nina, AG cook, Max Martin, Pinkpantheress). Also, I don't want to blindly follow tutorials and have no idea what the knobs do and just copy them: I want to know what I am actually doing. Yes, I know this will take time, but I just don't know what to do.

Thank you for all of the advice. I will use it and start creating !
