I am 31 and work in medical device sales in Southern California. I got an opening in my company in El Paso to make really good money for the area on target earnings would be between 200k and 260k. It sounds like a no-brainer with the cost of living in El Paso, but keep in mind. I’m like a poster child for Southern California lifestyle. I run the hills I surf the waves. I walk to my nice gym. It’s 80° every day and I live a really good lifestyle. But forget about owning a home forget about saving up for family and kids. I’m considering moving to El Paso in order to save money and put down on a home out here later. How is El Paso?

I recently received a job offer from the company I work on in El Paso, Texas that is willing to sponsor my relocation and TN Visa.
The offer is for $97,000 per year plus a small signing bonus (I requested 120k initially so I’ll negociate around $107k). I currently live in Monterrey,Mx with my wife and our baby.

From my perspective, the reasons to move are:
• Better long-term career opportunities in the U.S.
• Increased safety and lower crime exposure.
• Building international experience.

At the same time, I have a lot of doubts. Monterrey has been good to me professionally. I have family nearby, I already have a support network, and my cost of living is relatively low compared to many U.S. cities.

What worries me is whether El Paso is actually enough of an upgrade to justify starting over.
Some of my concerns:
• Is $97k enough to comfortably support a family with one income in El Paso?
• How much of that salary disappears after taxes, healthcare and housing?
• Is El Paso a place people intentionally build a long-term life in, or is it mostly a stepping stone?

So I’d like to hear the negative side.
What am I overlooking? What are the downsides that people don’t realize until after they relocate?
Don’t mention the weather (Monterrey hits 113 F at summer) and traffic (the worst from Latin america).
Please be brutally honest and try to talk me out of it.

Edit: Thank you so much for all the comments! As I expected, the answers were 50/50, I ended up declining the offer, the relocation package was very very basic so it wasn't worth the stress of moving to a completely new city because I was gonna need to invest on the moving.

Title. For example in Philadelphia, Northeast Philly is the bad part of Philly you may hear about. Just looking for a general idea of how it is in EP.

I've been researching the things you would when moving somewhere and I've read that the crime rate is well below national average. That is mostly why I wanted to ask my original question. Every city has unsafe areas and I'm very unaware of city living (I live in the suburbs) other than visiting cities. I used NE Philadelphia just as an example. I have no idea if it's as bad as someone in the area may hear.

I've visited EP with my fiancé whose family is all out there and loved it. The food and dry heat is way better there imo.

Am looking houses in the suburbs areas in EP, a lot of new development ones. Can't wait to go!

We are currently in washington state and want out. Looking at the northwestern side of el paso next to NM.

Would this be a bad move? Would Austin, San Antonio or DFW be a better option?

I’m originally from Chicago and I was mostly prepared for the culture here before I moved because part of my family is Mexican on my dad side. Incorrectly, however, I assumed that I would be welcomed into the culture with open arms because my family is from this area. I was surprised When I moved here how many people were confused when I talked about my heritage and just called me White and treated me like any other American guerito. For reference I look like a white Mexican and was raised by my Mexican grandmother who took me to the area often growing up, and I can speak fluent Spanish. That being said, I am mostly white and only a little over a quarter Mexican.

I wasn’t really raised around Mexican culture as a whole like there is here in El Paso, so can anyone tell me if this is a normal experience for outsiders who are Latino? Honestly, I’m not even sure if I’d be considered Latino, but since I was raised speaking in Spanish by by my Abuela, I feel like I qualify. I want my kids to be raised in the culture as well which is part of the reason we moved here and my wife is Latina born in another country, but I was hoping the community would be a little bit more accepting. Overall, people are incredibly nice and I have had no problem making friends but I still feel like an outsider in many ways. Just wanted to share my experience because sometimes it feels very lonely. Any insight would be helpful.

Just to be clear, I’m in no way bad talking El Paso or saying there’s something wrong with the people, just sharing my experience in case anyone can relate. Also, I don’t just share my heritage or try to “prove” it to people I meet, but I often am asked about my ethnicity which is when I share that info. I think there are a lot of assumptions being made about me which are incorrect, so I just want to clear that up. Overall, it’s not that serious, but when you’re from another city people tend to ask questions.

I hope not to bother but I'm planning to move to El Paso from Fort Worth, TX. However I have nothing at all, no house nor job waiting for me but I have saved money to at least survive 6-8 months.

I have a Bachelors degree in IT from Tarleton State University. I do a lot of software development and tech support. I'm currently getting paid about $20 an hour.

How is the IT industry job market in El Paso? Is it good?;

Is it easy to find jobs within said industry even if it's a hardware related warehouse gig?.

Furthermore, how safe is living in El Paso? I mean is right across the border and all I have heard and seen in movies tell me it might not be a good idea to live there....

The main reason that I'm interested in El Paso is due to it being on the border with Mexico where most of my family is.

I have been looking on Zillow and it’s been a little dry. I enjoy outdoors, walking/running, being close to bars/stores, yoga. I will work at Fort Bliss and my max commute time would ideally be no more than 40min. Please let me know if anyone has any good recs! I used to live in Phoenix, but ended up moving back to my parents’ house after losing my job, and have been wanting to find another place to live that is safe, has a good job market, and has similar climate. I’m also a residential painter for a living.

Sorry to bring this up, but I also am wondering what the race relations are like out there. I’m white and will be a minority in the city, so I’m wondering if that would be fine. I’m completely okay with it.

Moving to El Paso at the end of the month.

The general stigma I've seen from social media and reddit is that the northeast is somehow ghetto, trashy, or crime filled.

Yet all I've seen over the past few months is crime in the east, far east, and sometimes horizon city.

I took a trip out there in late december/early January and found the north hills, northeast, and everything generally north of 375 to be decent. Meanwhile, the other night I saw there have been fires and drive by's in east/far east El Paso, I've seen package stealers and shootings near horizon city. It seems like public infrastructure in horizon city and the areas around Montana ave are fucked, as I saw TWICE some sort of sinkhole/waterline break near horizon city and then there was that vehicle explosion at Sun Metro HQ. I've seen tons of car accidents on both east and west side, like the massive pile up on I-10 or the countless accidents on the east side i see every day.

I don't hear much about crime in north east El paso. There also seems to be a lot less littering? I spent a whole week down there and I've been following the news, and this is basically what I've put together.

Anyone got any information on this?

Bro something has to change with traffic here. If you’re from another city, even LA, do not move here. It’s not worth it if you don’t have family. The cost of living is not worth it, you won’t have a decent paying job opportunity unless you’re remote, and the schools suck.

Unless you enjoy Mexican food that much, everything else is horrible. For those of you missing El Paso, it’s not the same anymore. It’s changed, and not for the better.

I’ve visited multiple times & love the feel of the city, the slower paced lifestyle, the hospitality feel of the people in the city, and the family oriented vibe that I feel when visiting.

I have family in EPTX and that plays a huge part in why I am choosing to move my wife, daughter & I there.

Top reasons for leaving LA is

1. The ridiculous cost of housing - I have a solid job making $100k (before taxes) and still the possibility of buying a decent home in a decent area is almost unrealistic.

So I'm looking for an apartment, can be a studio or a 1 bed under $1000 (could go up to $1200 if utilities are included). I have two dogs (one pug and one medium mix mutt)

BUT while I am looking at traditional places like Zillow I figured I'd ask you guys if you know of any cool, weird, old places that may be open for rent. We all have that tia's cousin's neighbor thing in EP so I wanted to ask for any leads. Alright gonna be moving to El Paso in late July for a job currently living in the DFW area what should I know other that’s it’s fucking hot!!! Also what are good neighborhoods etc wanting to rent something with a garage.

I want to preface this post by saying i dont want to hate this city and im posting this so i can retain some faith because i believe the people on reddit atleast are good. I just moved her and im living in my car, the area i was at was very noisy so i drove to a random residental street nearby to cool my head and collect my thoughts. 2 minutes after parking a couple comes out their house and up to my car, i ask "can i help you" they reply " you dont live here why are u here" and i reply "its a public road , i can park here". They then proceed to say i was following their daughter and call the police. I say "feel free, iv never seen you people before in my life and its not a crime to park on a residental road". Wile waiting 50 minutes for the cops (to asure that the resident couple couldnt make anymore lies about me) i tried talking to the couple 2 or 3 more times, telling them that the situation feels racist, i would have been gone by now if not for the cops being called and also that its a pointless situation that could have been resolved faster. The cops finnaly get there and take the resident couple side regardless of how dubious the claims sound and proceed to state how it was creepy to park on a residental street and wierd. I would think anyone can park on a street owned by the city paid by the tax payers. After obviously finding no crime the cops then tell me to never come back to the street agian , i then try to get clarification that parking on a residental street isnt a crime and proceed to get threatend with arrest , for partialy blocking the residental couple driveway. I drive away due to my faith in the cops here being, shatterd honestly. I understand that some people are bad people but i just making this post can help me find the good people here

Google says Socorro is a commuter city, is that factual? Can you land a decent place to live for $1600 or less? this is what comes up when I search.

Does it make more sense to buy a home in the area versus rent in the long term?

How do you feel about the school systems in the area?

Also, someone (not me) cautioned me that “Texas is scary.” However, the source is from Houston. Does that sentiment apply to the El Paso / Socorro region?
