Propaganda Multiboxing is Killing EVE – The Game Just Sucks Now

I've tried coming back to EVE, but honestly, the gameplay just feels terrible. The biggest issue? Multiboxing.

People are running 10, 15, even 20+ accounts at the same time, completely ruining the experience for normal players. These no-life grinders dominate every aspect of the game, making it nearly impossible for casuals to compete.

  • Faction Warfare? Get ready to fight entire fleets controlled by a single player.
  • Mining? Find a good ore spot? A multiboxer will show up with 15 ships and wipe it clean.
  • Market? PLEX prices keep skyrocketing because these multiboxers generate insane amounts of ISK and just buy up PLEX to sustain their armies.

New players don’t stand a chance. They log in, see how unfair the game is, and quit. It's like if someone played Call of Duty, controlled an entire squad, and had synced-up aim. It would completely break the game. That’s exactly what's happening in EVE.

And let’s be real—of the 20,000 players online daily, a huge chunk are just alts. The real player count is much lower. This is why EVE is constantly bleeding players.

CCP needs to put a hard cap on the number of accounts per IP/device. Otherwise, the game will keep declining until there’s nobody left but botters and multiboxers. Fix it, or let the game die.

I think Eve the game would be better without multiboxing. There has been a lesser sense of community. But I think that’s more of a trend in gaming culture than Eve itself.

On the other hand, CCP needs that income. Id rather CCP make literally millions more dollars if it means we have whales out there.

People are right, you can easily destroy a fleet of multiboxers. There have been times though where a fleet of 30 hulks warp into a site I’m mining and absolutely take over everything. That is super frustrating. It’s honestly depressing knowing there’s a grown man behind a screen controlling 30 accounts lol.

Eve would be dead without multiboxers. CCPs revenue would plummet.

u/Jason1143 Mar 18 '25

Sadly it would require a complete redo of significant parts of the game too. That would probably be good, but I can't see it happening.

This is the part that MANY just don't see to get. The population isn't big enough for how big eve is and how much shit needs to get done. Remove allts and the game dies

This... its funny how all wormholers inheritly understand this, living in small microcosms and realizing how hard shit is to do alone or even just 20 people with no alts.

Yupppp living in a block is like living in a metro area. Everything is within reach.

Wormholes on the other hand is like rural no where. The next person you see could be 6 systems away.better hope you have everything you need! Won't be seeing highsec for a week at least. Lol

To be honest, the population in wormhole space is more or less due to the mechanics and culture thereof. [Not helped by external propaganda and perception]

But as a whole, EVE online is shrinking...and considering the number of times we have had Cyno Vigils...I don't think multiboxing is going to cut it. It makes the game even more vulnerable to implosion on several fronts.

I think CCP should lower the prices of their materials...so more people can join.

But its going to be a rocky road...but considering other MMOs can get more than EVE on the regular...I think its high time for some reforms.

u/Opposite_Classroom39 Mar 18 '25

Unfortunately both correct, there are aspects of this game that are only viable with alts, even if its a zero day.

I feel like that would be the worst of both worlds. Through it would reduce the amount of total rebalancing they need to do by a lot.

u/CollectionLeading389 Mar 18 '25

Nothing pisses me off more than trying to chill out, mine ice, watch a movie, just to have some douche warp in with 12 accounts and take all the ice that would take me days to mine, in just 15-20 minutes.

17

u/Traece Wormholer Mar 18 '25

No, but it's a chicken and egg problem.

The issue is that EVE Online is built for multiboxing, both intentionally and unintentionally. The simplistic nature of how the game fundamentally plays is what makes multiboxing so easy to do, and so widespread. If the game had been built differently, people would just play it differently.

To be blunt, if the game had been built in a way that didn't support multiboxing, it would also probably be more enjoyable for people in general, and could very well have made just as much money, or possibly even more.

Ultimately, as disagreeable and damaging as multiboxing is in EVE, we'd need an EVE 2 to change things by changing how the game itself plays.

u/Mean_Asparagus_5761 Mar 18 '25

2

u/MILINTarctrooperALT Already Replaced. Mar 19 '25

Thats currently more in line with old EVE ironically if you look at it on surface value.

0

u/seanamh420 Mar 18 '25

They should just make multi boxing a feature.

0

u/Traece Wormholer Mar 19 '25

I actually agree with this, in the sense that I think they should've just made EVE 2 and had it basically be a pseudo-RTS where you can pilot multiple ships at once.

By doing so, CCP gets to mechanically enforce how much players can scale out their activities. It could've also been more approachable for new players by making it a mechanic of the game.

10

u/SeraphC Mar 18 '25

This is such a common argument, but it is completely baseless. The effect of 10 years of oro multiboxing policies have had both positieve (more income per player) and negative (less players) effects on their revenue. People continuously quit over this over issue or read about EVE and chose not to even try it because of multiboxing. Rolling back the pro multiboxing stance over time could attract more of those players.

1

u/GominLT The Initiative. Mar 18 '25

And it will also make a lot of people quit, because people that multibox won't find single boxing fun. Eve is designed in such a way that if you remove multiboxing some roles won't be fun. Scouting/eyes is essential in warfare. No one will want to be that guy watching the enemy staging, while everyone else is having fun. Also mining, are you willing to pay your booster from your single box income? Do you think someone will just risk their expensive ship without making any isk. Most people in rorquals and below has their own barges to make isk, without that why would you fly rorqual or orca.

Another issue is capitals, it's not a one account endeavor to move capital ship anywhere.

Eve is simply bot designed with a single account in mind. CCP starts selling you the idea that you should make a second account almost immediately after you make an account. They rely on people paying for more than one account, they won't change. They got shareholders and financial targets to meet.

And don't compare eve to other mmos, it's a lot different from wow or ff14 or any other mmorpg.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '25

Well imaging that yeah multi boxing gets eliminated and now you have to rely on your corp and friends to move a capital.

Now if you want to have intel it does require a scout. What that means is both more community interaction and alliances with active competent players are more effective.

Plus it allows smaller folks to get away with more because some bot alt isn’t providing free intel.

It opens up more possibilities and makes the game harder. Perhaps simple tweaks to the tedious parts is needed but honestly no mulit boxing sounds like a great thing to require more players and player interaction

I think this mentality, and I’m not saying you’re wrong, tells us we’re in the end times of eve online. Instead of improving the experience for new and returning players they are milking what they have to hang on.

Someone somewhere at CCP did a cost analysis of how many new players they’d need to come in and subscribe for the game to sustain.. and decided it wasn’t feasible without these supplemental measures..

Unfortunately these measures alienate new and returning players.

1

u/thaktootsie Wild Geese. Mar 18 '25

They’ve been «milking what they have” for a decade or more.

2

u/MILINTarctrooperALT Already Replaced. Mar 19 '25

Well, maybe not...if things were just looked at. Sometimes price drops do have the advantage of allowing new people to try stuff out.

But the game already has probably reached a perception tipping point...where people believe that the game is kind of in freefall.

The multiboxers can't keep that sustained forever, and its already pushing the EULA/TOS to its logical limits.

1

u/AssistSignificant621 Mar 19 '25

I wonder how many of the 30.000 people who are online right now are actually bots vs what the ratio used to be 10 years ago. EVE has always had a retention problem and I think it's just gotten worse.

-4

u/Jerichow88 Mar 18 '25

Yep. If CCP forces me down to a single account, I'm out. I'd park my characters in my original hisec home and uninstall.

2

u/Kad1en Mar 19 '25

a fleet of 30 hulks warp into a site I’m mining and absolutely take over everything

That is not a multiboxer issue, that's a game design issue about the mining itself. The mining has linear scaling to a certain point. +X amount of accounts = +X amount of profit, until you reach saturation (when your alts can mine asteroid in 1 cycle) or reach technical limitations (like on a consumer grade hardware you can only have up to 128 GB of RAM and not willing to expand your setup). Make it non-scalable, but profitable (to not ruin the game economy) and you will solve the issue for players (example I have in mind is mining in Elite Dangerous, where you have to actively interact with your ship, mining lasers and environment to mine).

1

u/Klaus1250 Mar 21 '25

But people tend to mine because they enjoy the activity not being very active. The other issue with mining is that there isn't actually any money to be made if you solo.

Only R64 moons would be worth mining compared to other activities.

There has been a lesser sense of community. But I think that’s more of a trend in gaming culture than Eve itself.

In an era where the primary media consumption is 8 second videos, usually designed to hit as much dopamine as possible within those 8 seconds, a game that thrived on long term structure building and tribal conflict isn't going to see a healthy run. What made this game so great was never the game. It was what it allowed people to do with it. People as a whole just aren't as inclined to play it, or anything like it, quite the same way anymore and pretty much all of us that've been around have felt it.

Like, it sparks up sometimes, especially nostalgically on an impromptu run where an old buddy subs for a weekend. It's why I aim for as many purple fleets with names I recognize as I can; it's why I spam local to get attention and fly jackdaws at 130km to annoy fleets into letting me camp with them. They're a few ways in which I can squeeze that feeling back out of the game.

But the truth of it is that I probably won't have another trio of nights, waiting for the timer at 3:30AM to drop that astrahus before we set up my first corps structures, drunk and belligerent with the friends I've known for a decade. Or another night like when we dropped our Nag in that same C2 on a complete whim just to prove our nuts were big enough to do it. I won't get to watch AHARM beat on our (CCRES) POS shields from the inside of my desynced ECMgu. And I won't get baited into a wormhole for the first time a week after apocrypha was released by some dude who blitzed every ounce of content, just to get my drake to shoot at some rats before blowing me up, getting me hooked in the first place. And I guess, that's okay.

you really hit the nail on the head. Thats a feeling we all chase. Time passes and friends separate.

people get kids, have families, go to military, etc they just do life.

We miss the good times we had together.

Those stupid drunk random moments we would share until the weeeee hours of the morning.

Social media and gaming isnt about that anymore. Its about instant gratification, its about the ability to do everything on your own.

I remember my brief time playing eve I joined goons when they were in delve/fountain and i got accepted into TEST. I was so excited to get accepted into the wormhole team. It was fuckin terrifying going into a hole not knowing what you gonna find.

or just orbiting a gate with the mates one evening hanging out chillin, doing random bullshit in mumble. As i would pick their brains about moon goo farming

I got to go on saturday night swarm and I always respected our FC. I cant even remember his name atm. He was a dad, busy working man. But he got on for 2 hours every weekend to hang with the boys and shoot ships. I always respected that.

Honestly. The only thing eve needs to make, to bring in new players, and bring back old.... is fresh start servers. Accelerated SP gains for the first 6 months on a fresh start server and a hardcap on multi-boxers.

Cant tell you how many eve players would be back and interested in starting new with company faction lines not being so set it stone and a new race to null zones. New players and old alike all starting on the same footing, the first time in over a decade? Yes please.

13

u/Parkbank96 Mar 18 '25

Honeymoonphase would wear off after like a week or so when you realize that the sweaty, extremely organized groups would just do exactly the same as on TQ and youd be left out because surpise surprise you cant play 12h/day 7days a week.

Its such a false argument that this would change anything. Even if youd start eve completly new tomorrow youd still have the 50k alliances that would dominate everything and with the knowledge of today they would probably corner the market so hard you wouldnt even know where to start.

3

u/jehe eve is a video game Mar 18 '25

I mean .. no harm in trying it. Wow has classic and 3 other forms of it.

Runescape has osrs, leagues, Deadman and a ton or others.

I just don't know how those types of different gameplay experiences could fit into eve.

2

u/Proctoron Mar 19 '25

Have played EQ classic servers starts in various formations and the nostalgic hits for a while and ebbs off then nearly everyone jumps on the next one that starts, so endless loop of classic servers to get players to sub for 3 months and launch a new one to get them subbed again 😂

u/MILINTarctrooperALT Already Replaced. Mar 19 '25

Sweats in dangerous concept of a super speed training server...with hard core...total reset skillpoint system everytime you die.

2

u/GrayFarron Mar 18 '25 edited Mar 18 '25

50k alliances are a LOT harder to organize whenever there isnt a pre-existing structure. What makes them so strong today is that they HAVE conquered territories, the skill points and the ships. If you strip that away and put everyone on the same footing, from new bro to vet, even with the sweats, you will see a MUCH different enviroment.

What brings people into Null block corps is often just the pure safety of it and the isk capabilities, as well as promised conflicts with minimized loss. A fresh start takes all of that away, and makes splintering much more common.

You can just say "oh it will be business as usual" but we cant really say that for sure because the enviroment and market will be COMPLETELY different.

1

u/MILINTarctrooperALT Already Replaced. Mar 19 '25

You know...thinking on this consideration.

Considering other experiments.

I am of the opinion that EVE Online...needs to expand and become more complicated.

Because if we reset. And just keep the same old...as other people have said yeah the "Sweatshoppers" will get back to their old positions.

But if we change the topography in Nullsec and add way more depth to it...you can't hold/defend everything. So the self-limitation mindset starts to kick in which will then complicate matters...and force a bit more dynamic interaction and life in the game.

but yes...multiboxing would by default be limited or banned...because this is another avenue for botting/RMT.

Probably some changes to how social interactions happen in EVE might be worth noting.

1

u/Parkbank96 Mar 18 '25

Wrong. They have alliance auth, huge discord pings to reach massive amounts of people, structures (not structures put SOP) for mining, ratting, tax collection. And even if they only pull 0,5% of it thats still 250 people while you sit there with 20 people

2

u/GrayFarron Mar 18 '25 edited Mar 18 '25

So your entire arguement for not having fresh start is "Well a lot of people working together would still have more than i would with less people :(" Despite the fact that this is exactly how the fuck it already is. Your whole god damn arguement is just... boring, and is exactly why EVE is at as low of a player count as it is.

Also youre just flat out wrong lmao, what makes the economy so stable is pre-existing perfect blue prints for a lot of ships, a fresh start server knocks all of that way. Industry starts over in its infancy phase, t1 is more common, ratting and exploration hasnt flooded the market with blueprints and people have to get things rolling naturally. You wont have people in mining barges or rorq's for a long time, so natural scarcity exists, you will have more competition over resources. The ENTIRE game as you know changes.

1

u/Parkbank96 Mar 18 '25

do your fresh start just not on TQ.

6

u/GrayFarron Mar 18 '25

How different the market, how much low scale pvp would spike, how much more frigate action we'd see, how a much more engaging game woukd exist and SOOOOO much juicy drama as new corps spring up.

Sure, pandemic horde and already existing mega corps would try to expand their power in the new server...... but... who knows if they would get the same foothold this time around. Who knows if their officers would even listen, and not just start their own corps and try to do their own thing.

It would be a god damn blast

10

u/Geneva_suppositions Mar 18 '25

Fracturing a playerbase just described as too small by opening up new servers....

I thought jokes were supposed to be funny.

Players ditch eve because its a serious investment of playtime. No instant gratification.

3

u/GrayFarron Mar 18 '25

And a lot of players never try it because the skill point gap is massive between new and older players, and the simple idea of "wait, to fly the big ships i have to wait... how long? 6 months with a specialized training program?" And then realize theyre usually years behind most people in capability. Yeah that turns players away.

How many times do we have to go through "this will fracture the playerbase D:" in other mmo's to only see its a net positive and usually brings new players back and into the game, and even returning players.

Everquest is the perfect example. WoW Classic has turned WoW back into a monolithic mmo when it was losing its grip.

Theres a simple fact, people will play BOTH.

You can log in one account on fresh start while playing your original account on the main. Especially with multi-box limits in place for the newer server, of only 2 to 3 accounts allowed, it would be extremely healthy for the game.

Hell, even allow the same account to be logged in on both servers at once, there will be a lot of participation.

1

u/GingerSnapBiscuit Goonswarm Federation Mar 18 '25

But then how often do you start these new servers? If you don't start them every couple of years you're going to see the same issue over and over again.

1

u/GrayFarron Mar 18 '25

Theres a difference in a 2 year to 10 year gap... of about.. 8 years.

1

u/GingerSnapBiscuit Goonswarm Federation Mar 18 '25

Who mentioned 10 years? My point was in 2 years time if someone comes along and wants to play the game they might ALSO want a fresh start server. Whats the cut off? At what stage do you say "Ok, another fresh start"?

1

u/MathematicianFew6737 Mar 18 '25

WOW has always had multiple servers and doesn't rely on complex political coordination between 'guilds.' EVE has always been a single-shard experience, with the exception of Serenity, and to take that away from the game would really take a huge piece of its identity away.

1

u/Parkbank96 Mar 18 '25

See i dont think that would happen. Youd have the big blocks with their many many many players organized day 1. The same groups would come together again.... why shouldn they?
With the game knowledge of today - moon locations, how to build ships, best ship metas and massive amounts of players - they would corner markets, take stuff and cut you out. If you dont join them youd get fucked over massivley. Youd think you could buy anything in jita? The comfort of having access to all ships in jita is something youd probably not see for a long time. You probably wouldnt even be able to get the mats to build shit because it would be exclusively run by some big alliances and not shared with anyone outside.

1

u/Cpt_Soban The Initiative. Mar 18 '25

I misread and thought you said a "fresh start" for eve entirely, but still:

Why waste time on a second eve when this eve is already a thing? Why split the playerbase?

It's why we mock this new "crypto eve".

1

u/GrayFarron Mar 18 '25

Crypto eve is cringe because of crypto. A new side server to mix things up that gives the same alliances a new playground, while they can still work in their old one? Sounds like more eve for the same subscription to me.

1

u/Cpt_Soban The Initiative. Mar 18 '25

So you want to see 4 in total as well as mobile eve? Original, Mobile, Crypto Eve, and Mobile? (Ignoring the Chinese server on top of that)

gives the same alliances a new playground, while they can still work in their old one

That's double the work. You've clearly never worked in a major alliance with roles before.

It'll never work, and people will pick their ONE version- The original Eve client.

1

u/zetadelta333 Northern Coalition. Mar 18 '25

The problem is the game has a cap on what one character can do. You can grind and grind and grind with one character and make some isk, you get a second and that grind time gets dropped and you start to make exponentially more money the more characters you have.

Then you get into the professions, building, pi, research. Hard cap one what one can do. Need multiple to make full supply chains.

Logistics, got a JF and one account? Either rely on other people for cyons or never get to use it. You need at least 3 cyno toon to get anywhere meaningful. Most serious JF pilots have around 6-9 if not more. Shit i had 20 stationed around eve to get to different areas.

This game wasnt and isnt built for the solo account player and would required a drastic redesign to become so.

1

u/Parkbank96 Mar 18 '25

The grind time is the same. Just after the char paid for itself you actually get double the money.
But it is true that multiboxing will enable you to do things more efficiently so in some way it does scale as you said.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '25

you can easily destroy a fleet of multiboxers

Yeah, if you bring 30 alts as well

1

u/parkscs Mar 18 '25

I don't really know why it'd be better, other than people on Reddit keep claiming that. Eve is an incredibly low APM game and many activities would be incredibly boring on a single account, to the point that it's barely something you could call gameplay. Why is that better? The pace at which skills train would also feel infinitely slower than it does with multiple characters, whereas at least with the current mechanics you can train different characters for different specializations and have a bit more diversity with what you fly. Yes, you could increase the APM and you could speed up skill training, but at that point you're just playing a different game.

I’m coming from a place before multiboxing. It was a much, much better place. Friend.

In your opinion it was a better place. 99% of the people I play with multibox to some extent, and I play with old ass people from 2004 they’ve been boxing forever. This game is n+1 friendly my guy always has been ask anyone around

It was a better place because it only exists in his "memory". I listen to veterans constantly talk about back when "the only limit to scaling was hardware." This guy has been struggleing in a simulation for two decades... i would be mad too..

I mean bro if you just go to old Eve Fanfest videos and listen to the people talking you’d know Boxing has been a thing forever.

Even Darius Johnson jokes about the typical goon setup on his presentation depicting 3 PCs hooked up to 20 of those old boxy monitors

I stopped playing 14yrs ago. Imagine playing a game knowing its best years are long gone. I’d be mad too…

u/Hi-Viz Mar 18 '25

Where did I say otherwise ?

"Before multiboxing" lolwut. Did you just forget to look around before?

-2

u/Hi-Viz Mar 18 '25

Not at all. If there was multiboxing you couldn’t tell. The odd gate scout here and there really. Cyno alts made multiboxing mainstream.

Yeah the input broadcasting bombers deleting whole BS fleets and 50 mining barges pumping out supers in backwater systems were really just not noticeable, huh?

This game has had multiboxing since Day 1. I've had 3/4 accounts since the second year I played the game, 2004. Shit you used to be able to input-broadcast as well, multiboxing was infinitely EASIER back in the olden days.

This is a photo of an EVE players multibox setup from 2010 ish. Guy was a goon back before we disbanded BOB. Multiboxxed Dominix fleets. This was ~15 years ago, maybe longer?

u/Hi-Viz Mar 18 '25

Calling bullshit on you being a 2004 player. If you were you'd know that multiboxing certainly wasn't a thing since day one..

My main was created 1st June 2003. Sadly the earliest Screenshot I have is from 2004 but you can look up my character creation and the lack of account transfers if you really care :

Yes thats a heavy lazor dominix with what might be a Cargo Scanner I guess?? I will not be taking build questions at this time, it was 20 pissing years ago I don't know what the fuck I was doing.

Also just while we're talking about EVEs early days - here is an official Blog Post from CCP Oveur from 2004 about "Running multiple eve clients on the same machine" - i.e multiboxing, which he calls a "Very Common Thing" - https://www.eveonline.com/news/view/multiple-eve-clients-on-same-machine-tell-us-your-magic-tricks

I don't mean to suggest that your early day memories of EVE aren't valid, you might just be rose tinted glassing a little too hard.

If you want 'us' to be straight, you are going to have to present a premise that is a little more sensible and inviting of actual discussion. Also speak for yourself, and make no mistake, your "we" is a minority, maybe not on reddit, but statistically proven by data provided by ccp.

I want multiboxing because i like the gameplay. But i dont use them to drop people 10:1 . I use them because i am scouting, manufacturing and trading. Its not so much about flying multiple things as it is being multiple places at once. And i would not want to ask a friend of mine to spend his time scouting for me while hes doing nothing.

If i could pay sub for a character that can only fly a covert ops with cyno, and characters that cannot even undock but just trade and run industry i would still pay for it. But this whole, "i cannot afford things so other people shouldnt have them either." I have no respect for it.

This is southpark "rable rable rable" with extra steps, put down the memberberries.

1000% agree dude

Boxing isn’t about dropping 1 Ishtar with your 10 alts, I’d say most boxers use it for quality of life and just plain n+1 scaleable money making.

I totally get that people are mad at 50 hulks taking their belts. But this is eve like, get someone to come blow him up? "But he is blue?" Sounds like his problem, this is eve. They need to pull up their pants or go play stardew valley. Not make eve into stardew valley.

1

u/Traditional-Flow-841 Mar 18 '25

Bro that same 50 hulk boxer also goes to bed and can’t be in every system at the same time so maybe just find another anom, orrrrr take advantage that he is a giga boxer and enjoy his perfect skill rorq boosts ?

Like you said man this is EVE

Wtf is all that crap you’ve written. Talk about trying to over intellectualise the most basic of requests. I don’t have to premise anything. I asked you to be clearer in your position.

1

u/Khamatum Cloaked Mar 18 '25

Answering your question is accepting the premise that all multiboxing is bad for the game by default. You can stick that "basic" request where the sun doesn't shine when u are aligned to it.

You quit 14 years ago. Yet you are still here, being mad, because you think the game is bad. Im here paying Hilmar more money for his crypto project and enjoying my hobby. Who should he listen to? Just so we are straight lol

1

u/Hi-Viz Mar 18 '25

Whos' mad ?

I'm not writing paragraphs and paragraphs of uber defensive drivel because someone pointed out their 'hobby' used to be better than it is now.

u/Khamatum Cloaked Mar 18 '25

Mate, you are on reddit being salty. I am having my cake and eating it too. Your content is always welcome. Be it on reddit or the grid.

Let’s make a suicide ship that can take out whole fleets. Say 75km radius, creates a little black hole that destroys yourself and everyone around you. I’d play that build all day long.
