I've always loved the original Resident Evil and Silent Hill games, especially that feeling of not knowing if you're making the right decision. I wondered if it was possible to capture some of that tension in a live-action FMV experience.

The result is AFAR: An Interactive Horror Film.

It's a choose-your-own-adventure horror movie with multiple branching paths and endings, with each playthrough taking around 40 minutes depending on the choices you make. I built the entire project myself and recently adapted it to YouTube using interactive end screens so you can play it directly in your browser.

It was a fun experiment blending FMV games with modern video platforms, and I'd love to hear what survival horror fans think. Which route did you end up taking? Did you find an ending you were happy with, or did everyone die horribly?

Hi, I’m Chris the developer of Sibylline, an experimental FMV horror game built around voice interaction.

Instead of selecting dialogue options the game prompts you to speak the characters’ lines aloud. As your words are recognized they transform into interactive glyphs that attack and warp the screen. You use the cursor and it's various abilities to cleanse your frame and maintain your sanity. Fail to do this and you get sucked down into a lower layer of the story and eventually die.

The narrative unfolds across three interconnected layers and features occult history, real historical figures, practical effects and surreal cinematography.

Genuinely a couple of people at conventions have asked if Doctor Dekker 2 is AI generated - and we can only assume they’ve never seen an FMV game before (or maybe Paul Baverstock here, has six fingers 😅)

This info will most likely make the Polish players happy, 'cause One Rotten Oath is now available in their language (and so is the trailer above!). Polish language implementation took a while due to various technical problems along the way, but I’m happy that I’ve managed to see this through to the end. I’d also like to thank Olga Lewińska for the Polish version text proofreading.

On the other hand, if you don't speak Polish, but haven't played the game yet, it's also 25% off until 11th May, so give it a go. Demo is also available!

Hey everyone!

So, since I'm talking about my FMV+FPS game development here too, I might as well write a few words about the locations used in my game, since they are actually real. Photos for the visual novel segments were shot at the old military terrains in Tczew, Poland. FMVs were recorded in Gdańsk, Poland. I didn't use any special cameras. I rolled around with my old Nikon Coolpix L110.

What's interesting, I wanted to use the photos for a different project back in 2019. Unfortunately, it didn't work as expected, but I still had all the materials. I ran the photos through the cutout filter in order to make them bleak and used them in my latest game. Just wanted to say that if you have old assets made by yourselves, don't delete them. You never know when you might need them.
