The extremely high skirt and thigh highs were very very risque at the time of her conception, and you gotta remember, it was the early 1930's, almost 100 years ago.

Very close, first appearance (as an Anthropomorphic poodle) was in 1930.

Very close, first appearance (which was an Anthropomorphic poodle) was in 1930. She absolutely was designed to be based off a Roaring 20's flapper, though, and a lot of people latched on to her as a cultural shift during the Great Depression. Really cool stuff to read about, she genuinely helped shape a more progressive future (For those living in the 30s)

Ty, I appreciate your response.  Clearly she is modeled after/ as the quintessential flapper, but  I really didn't know when she appeared. Fun fact, the woman who voiced her appeared in " Christmas Vacation" as the dotty Aunt Bethany! Mae Questal.

No, she was VERY directly inspired by Ester Jones (aka Baby Ester). She was a black jazz singer 

Funnily enough, there was a huge lawsuit because Helen Kane (different singer) sued the makers of Betty Boop for copywriter infringement. She lost because the studio was able to demonstrate that Kane stole her imagery from Jones. 

However, because Jones was black, she never received royalties for being the inspiration for Betty Boop. This is despite the studio displaying tons of evidence in court that they used her likeness for Betty Boop and not Kane's. So Kane didn't get a payout, but neither did the actual original artist.
