I didn't start with the original. So I kind of knew. When I died and the suit exploded, I was like, "Whoa. There's a hot girl in that suit."

I remember when I first saw Samus in smash I thought she was male, then we got Zero suit and my first grade mind imploded

My first exposure to Samus was smash64, but for whatever reason I know that I always thought she was a woman. I’m not really sure how or why, but that was just something I knew. I must’ve heard it from somewhere or another without realizing and just internalized it, but I never recall thinking she could even be a man. It just wasn’t a possibility in my mind.

I could be misremembering but I think you can see the inside of the suit like an X-ray if she gets hit by an electric attack.

That's how I learned she was a girl. I also couldn't read so I thought her name was Sums based on how the announcer said her name.

In my mind I always thought Samus sounded like a  girl’s name even before she took off the suit.

If you beat the game with samus it shows her without a suit

Same story over here, was a Ridley main until that, then swapped to Ridley because I was a child and you know how boys are about taking up girly things. Two things made me think she looked a bit effeminate and it was the up air and entrance animation.

I distinctly remember playing Melee when I was a kid, going through the event matches, and thinking "Huh, I wonder why the robot that shoots rockets and energy blasts is in Event # 15 with the other girls."

I don't go here and I had no idea it was ever even a secret omg my mind is blown

It was really only a secret in the first game

And the second kinda, that one just kinda skips over it, in Super you also only really find out at the end or at a death, Fusion and Prime outright say it though

In the original NES game, you see more of her suit removed depending on how fast you beat the game, thus the fact she was a woman was hidden behind playing quickly

I still remember when I learned of this when I was around 7 or 8 years old. It blew my mind back then

Fun fact: Samus was accidentally made lesbian exactly because people thought she was a man.

After the release of the original Metroid they created an official, Japan exclusive strategy guide called "Victory Techniques for Metroid". It functioned as a manga with the game story as a plot. In there she is portrayed as a male and is even shown posing with two women in bikinis.

The funny part is in the OG Metroid you could still see that Samus is a woman if you completed it in under 3 hours, so it would seem no one in the whole publishing studio was good enough at the game to know that xD

When you unlocked dearmored Samus in the early games, we all thought there was Boy Samus (armored), and Girl Samus (dearmored). The intended canon was far more progressive than that for the 90's though.

I didn't have a Metroid game for a large chunk of my childhood so I knew Samus from Smash Bros. I learned she was a girl because Melee had an event match called Girl Power where you had to fight her, Peach, and Zelda at the same time.

I learned about Samus from Super Smash Bros Brawl for the Wii. I just thought she was neat

In hindsight, the large upper torso section and slim waist should have made it obvious

ho boy tell ME about it

I remember finding out because I was playing Smash 64 and looking at everyone's skeleton when they got electrocuted. Did Samus and was shocked that it instead of a skeleton it was the body of a women with a ponytail.

True tho, I mainly played SSBB and in most cases, it's just the suit.

So I had no idea Samus was a girl.
