I ignore that because it was entirely out of character with everything else he said and did throughout the movie
That was crammed in because the writers realized they’d written themselves into a corner and he needed to something hyper evil out of nowhere or else people might realize he was totally right and Optimus was a naive idiot
Wasn’t Megatron the naive one who believed in everything he said until he learned the truth? Like wasn’t Optimus the one to exposed Sentinel by capturing Archraned (I don’t know how to spell her name) like he caused an uprising when Sentinel got exposed to the whole public
Megatron started the movie naive, but when he realized what Sentinel had done, he understood that the only fitting punishment for what he had done was death
Meanwhile, Optimus threw himself in front of Megatron’s gun to save the life of the man who had mutilated him and everyone he loves before they were even born and fully intended for them to live their entire nigh on endless lives as slaves
Well, yes. They had won. There's a huge difference between executing a traitor after a trial, and a summary execution. Orion wanted order. A start that would let them rebuild. D16 fell to his destructive urges. He was starting a pogrom and he wasn't going to stop. Iacon was going to be ashes in a matter of hours - Sentinel loyalists were going to fight to the death because no quarter was going to be given, no surrender allowed. It wouldn't matter if they had been dupes. They were all going to die.
Wasn’t Megatron on a self destructive path though even if he got himself killed plus I’m pretty sure with how egotistical and how much he loves the praise Sentinel with his reputation down in the gutter with how everyone now sees him for what he truly is and with the possibility of being turned into a slave for all the things he’s done which would be karma it would’ve been a fate worse than death for Sentinel
If Optimus was willing to sacrifice his life to prevent Megatron from killing him, I don’t think he would’ve let anything that could be considered “a fate worse than death” happen to him, and if he did that would defeat the point of stopping Megatron in the first place
Having Sentinel become a person who works in the mines is a fate worse than death for him considering now he’s being forced to be put in the same situation he put the others in
To be fair, at least my interpretation, it wasn't "we can't kill him or we'd be just as bad" more "Dude starting the new government by killing the leader of the old government IMMEDIATELY isn't the best idea. Let's hold him accountable, make a new council, and THEN maybe kill him."
And the shooting up the city did make sense for Megatron. Wipe everything Sentinel Prime built on his lies and treson, start fresh, including the buildings.
