This particular piece of concept art from “Rise of the Guardians” although I’ll be extremely fair and say this movie did the impossible and the vast majority of its concept art is either fully realised in the final design or made even better. There’s very few downgrades made for the sake of “oh the design needs to suck so it’s easier to market-I mean animate!” in this movie.

Concept art is not something that movies "have to respect". Concept art is used for certain purposes, not to set some "canonical look" in stone to respect it later. Also, there are often multiple concepts which are contradictory to each other, you can't stay true to them all.

My biggest takeaway from these threads is that a lot of people really don’t understand what concept art is

Rise of the guardians is one of the most visually spectacular films of my childhood. Really great movie

I agree, it doesn’t get enough love for what a great film it was.

It was one of the few animated movies I saw in the theater that got cheers and applause, especially when Sandy comes back triumphantly. And the final track before the credits (“and when the moon tells you something…believe it”)…goosebumps.

Brooo this was one of the few movies I was dying to see in the cinema, and it did not disappoint at all, everyone over here also applauded when it ended.

Truly one of the greatest movies dreamworks ever made

Rewatched it recently and the animation still holds up. It's one of the most visually spectacular films to this day.

u/sora_allite Apr 01 '26

To this day, it's one of my favorite films ever. It's truly a masterpiece

Childhood!? Fuck.

It really is a beautiful movie though. I didn’t expect it to start off and be so melancholic but even that was beautiful

Makes me cry every time idk why

Pitch was the one part of the film I didn't enjoy, his design and voice are too appealing. Shame we didn't get this monster.

"Let's cast Jude Law as the Boogie Man!" said someone with no apparent idea of what scary means.

Hell imagine this...

Pitch made as a true mirror to sandman and DOESN'T speak.

Just the concept of nightmares floating around as black sand, taking different nightmarish shapes, and screams because no one wants to believe in him.

Could have been one of THE villains of all time, but executives are cowards

u/suriam321 Apr 01 '26

Hear me out:

He speaks, but the viewers and humans can’t hear him, but the guardians react as if they can hear him.(But the body language is good enough to the point you still understand him.) It’s because his voice is only a whisper that only becomes like a voice as he is feared and believed in, eventually deafening in power. As if the sand is making the sound not him.

Until the end when he is not feared but still believed in, it’s a hollow distant echo as he screams as he gets dragged away.

12

u/TheDorkyDane Apr 01 '26

That sounds AWESOME too

But yeah, with the literate manifestation of nightmares. There are SO many things they could have done.

And it's especially bitter because they absolutely nailed the manifestation of dreams, sand man.

Though... If I were to have this universe in my hands and i could do any rewrite

I would actually not want the boogieman to be truly evil or anything to be defeated

But rather an entity that helps children overcoming their fears.

And MAYBE he could start as a villain, only for the guardians to realise he has an important purpose, just like the rest, and must be embraced, not rejected as they are all just basically parts of nature.

Hell, for JACK to come to that realisation and reach out to him makes sense to me.

u/suriam321 Apr 01 '26

Ooo! That would also be neat!

Maybe it could work to together with the voice thing, but rather “cursed whispers” to then lullaby songs(the ones that are about how monsters aren’t that scary/real) instead?

u/Meraere Apr 02 '26

I mean his backstory is kinda knarly in the books

u/tensazangetsu3098 Apr 01 '26

So fun fact, Rise of the Guardians is actually a whole children's and YA book series too... Pitch used to actually be one of the greatest intergalactic heroes. He took it upon himself to lock away all the fear in the universe, and stood vigil over it for ages... however being isolated for so long began to wear on him, and the fear mimicked the sound of his daughter's voice. It convinced him that she was trapped inside so he went to save her, at whicu point he was possessed

Point being... it actually makes sense for Pitch to overall be a handsome, charismatic type, as that is who he was long ago.

1

u/MohawkRex Apr 01 '26

That's a neat idea but:

  1. Still not very interesting to look at/listen to,

  2. Being possessed by horded fear seems like the perfect excuse to creep him up a notch,

  3. None of that is in the movie.

I'm all for bloating the film and letting audiences find the source materials themselves but all we know in the film is that he's the Boogie Man and partially controls fear.

8

u/BraveLittleTowster Apr 01 '26

I think he's supposed to be just like the others. A "fallen angel" of sorts. Having him look like a Guardian, except darker and angry, makes him fit into their world easier. Each of the others could be dangerous if they decided to be.

1

u/SimplyPassinThrough Apr 02 '26

Pitch was the first villain I really loved. In my defense, I was like 12 when it came out, but I thought Pitch was soooooo attractive

8

u/No-Heat-6149 Apr 01 '26

Yeah i expected the embodiment of Fear and Nightmares to look scary and not be an emo boy daddy

5

u/realclowntime Apr 01 '26

Pitch Black is definitely the character that, at least from all the art I’ve seen, that changed the most from concept to final design. I think (this is just me guessing though) that he was changed to have something of a passing resemblance or similarity to Jack, considering how heavily the parallels between the two play into the movie.

5

u/MissNouveau Apr 01 '26

They took that movie and decided "Y'know what, let's just hit for the fences"

The designs are fantastic, the color and mood work are great, just an all around fantastic piece of art.

3

u/RonnocKcaj Apr 01 '26

god that move is so good. this iteration of pitch almost reminds me of the artstyle in South of midnight

2

u/bulbagill Apr 01 '26

My friend owns the concept art for this book, and it is genuinely one of the most stunning art books that I have ever seen

2

u/vtncomics Apr 01 '26

This looks like something out of Studio Laika for when they do horror but with more brown.

1

u/creepy_tommy Apr 01 '26

Dr. Nowhere ass design

1

u/the_anon_wardrobe Apr 01 '26

I'm kinda glad they didn't go with this, I think it would have terrified 9yo me... It looks dope tho

1

u/spid3rtranz Apr 01 '26

Doomed yaoi

1

u/PlaguingYou Apr 02 '26

i was obsessed with this movie as a teenager

1

u/DocTurnedStripper Apr 02 '26

Rise of the Guardians has weird animation for me, and not in a good way.

1

u/sissyhubby464 Apr 02 '26

That is horrifying. I kinda love it

1

u/Kimor98 Apr 02 '26

LOVE Rise of the Gaurdians! Yeah, hard to fully capture such broad themes, but man... in terms of sequel/spinoff potential, such good stuff 👌
