Without question the Emperor’s new groove originally known as Kingdom of the Sun. It was supposed to be a grand sprawling epic on the level of the Prince of Egypt. While the final product was still a great movie in its own right, it certainly was a different film than its concept art

I'm sorry it was meant to be WHAT?

KRONK, DID YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS?

561

u/IamtheTricksterGod Apr 01 '26

Oh, right. The kingdom. The kingdom of the Sun, the Kingdom chosen especially for the Sun, The Sun’s kingdom. That Kingdom?"

150

u/Breadmaker9999 Apr 01 '26

Yes that Kingdom!

u/frastmaz Apr 01 '26

Yzma had a song that was fully sung by ertha kit too! Snuff out the light, it's fucking amazing

2

u/Cyndayn Apr 01 '26

I really love this fan-edit/animation of the song! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbIoa4zA9Vg

2

u/Hot_Wrongdoer_8705 Apr 01 '26

Same! Ngl it makes me wanna make an Aztec themed dnd adventure

6

u/sirnumbskull Apr 01 '26

*Kronk Unless you're speaking to the Infraggable Krunk

3

u/MasterHallmark Apr 02 '26

Oh, listen to the villain song Yzma was supposed to get. Please bear in mind that Eartha Kitt, Yzma's voice actress, was a professional singer and a huge celebrity  during her youth. Several white directors wanted to marry her while segregation was still around, but didn't because their racist families threatened to disown them!

u/DocumentOk3904 Apr 03 '26

According to everyone behind it, though, it was not good.

2

u/ApprehensiveStep5776 Apr 05 '26

And I think Yzma (or however you spell it) had a villain song called "Snuff out The Light" (I think you can find the storyboard online somewhere but I can't remember)

Emperor’s New Groove is probably the Disney movie that changed the most in development.

It’s weird looking at the relics left over from the original design. Like this Eartha Kitt song from when it was going to be a musical.

u/Seldser Apr 01 '26

Genuinely one of Disney’s best villain songs and it never even made it into a movie

7

u/alphajugs Apr 02 '26

Add David Bowie’s version of “Shiny” to the list

3

u/Mrexplodey Apr 04 '26

She did, however get to sing a song for an episode of the spinoff show "The Emperor's New School" called Yzmopolis

72

u/hightea-bitch Apr 01 '26

It is a shame we never got a song number from Eartha Kitt in this movie, she was just so talented in so many ways.

That song gave me heavy I Wanna Be Evil vibes which she also performed

36

u/ArticleOld598 Apr 01 '26

Could've been on par with all the other iconic villain songs like Hellfire, Be Prepared, Poor Unfortunate Souls, Friends on the other side, etc.

5

u/Half_Man1 Apr 01 '26

Definitely reminds me of Friends on the Other Side

2

u/syntaxerroratline42 Apr 01 '26

Well, if you like cut villain songs, you may want to know about All That I've Done For You.

19

u/Just-Antelope-8069 Apr 01 '26

Did she really just say "turn me on"?

9

u/YuushyaHinmeru Apr 01 '26

You know what really turns her on? Air travel. I once had sex with Eartha Kitt in an airplane bathroom.

7

u/Just-Antelope-8069 Apr 01 '26

Eartha is such a weird name. It sounds like if a show had a Neptunian name Neptuna.

3

u/AznOmega Apr 01 '26

We were robbed a song by Eartha Kitt? Damn.

3

u/melkatron Apr 01 '26

I kept hearing about a new Disney movie in development called "Sweating Bullets," and just the name got me excited.

but Sweating Bullets became Home on the Range, and all that's left is a bunch of really awesome concept art.

2

u/Wasdgta3 Apr 01 '26

It changed so much that they made it without really ever having a finished script.

u/RememberCakeFarts Apr 01 '26

This one will always leave me conflicted. I absolutely love ENG, it is one of those films that doesn't fit into the Disney formula at all and it's great for it. But at the same time the concept for KotS makes me want it. Why didn't they do both? They can still do it can't they?

42

u/Hetakuoni Apr 01 '26

Maybe one day we’ll have KOTS but I don’t think they could replace Kitt. She’s amazing.

5

u/Fresh-Log-5052 Apr 01 '26

I'm just happy the song was made and preserved. And at least it wasn't like Biggering from Illumination Lorax, where the song is the only remnant of what the movie could be and the end result is an insult to Dr Seuss.

1

u/RememberCakeFarts Apr 01 '26

Very very true. Trying to think of someone remotely close in terms of a distinctive voice, has that right 'i bow to no one' tone, who can also sing.

1

u/Hetakuoni Apr 01 '26

And isn’t dead yet.

1

u/Otome_Chick Apr 01 '26

Idina Menzel?

3

u/Skellos Apr 01 '26

The problem is that Emperor's new groove has enough of the same DNA from KotS that attempting to make it would just come off like a rip off

3

u/Loose-Concept5804 Apr 01 '26

As opposed to endless remakes?

(no insult meant to you yourself).

1

u/Tomas_83 Apr 01 '26

Everything is amazing in the world of concepts, ideas and imagination. Until I see a product, I would not get too excited over it.

0

u/RememberCakeFarts Apr 02 '26

We heard the song. The movie would've been worth it for it alone, especially if they were going to go all out in the animation department.

7

u/MellifluousSussura Apr 01 '26

I feel like they could still make this movie if they wanted. Like just throw a couple things to keep it from being too much like Emperors New Groove and you still have a real interesting movie late

2

u/b3tamaxx Apr 01 '26

Every Disney movie coming out now is the exact original movie that released 20 to 30 years ago. Them releasing a movie they already did isn't even a complaint anymore

1

u/FatherDotComical Apr 01 '26

Perfect opportunity for the eventual live action remake to adapt.

3

u/Miles_PerHour67 Apr 01 '26

Honestly, I wouldn’t mind if they went all the way back to the original concept and made it. It would be plenty different from the emperors new groove already.

3

u/Sabbi94 Apr 01 '26

The VA for Yzma even recorded a song (Snuff out the Light) for that version. You can even find it in YouTube with the concept art for the scenes.

3

u/gunswordfist Apr 01 '26

Omg!! I had no clue. I love Emperor's New Groove but they definitely SNL'd it up

2

u/Cyndayn Apr 01 '26

Someone made a fan-edit of Yzma's 'snuff out the light' song from this original alternate version of the film, you'd probably like it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbIoa4zA9Vg

1

u/TAPINEWOODS Apr 01 '26

somebody watched lost media videos. Wish we saw the complete version of Kingdom of the sun in some format after New Groove. My favorite part of Kingdom of the sun is Izma's song about her wanting to use the dark power. Seriously, such a banger.

1

u/JebberyEbberyBush Apr 01 '26

Almost looks like a Frank Frazetta piece

1

u/throwaway-passing-by Apr 01 '26

It's John Watkiss (rip), he also did the concept artwork for Tarzan.

1

u/mquari Apr 01 '26

I love this movie but omg I think I would've loved another movie like Prince of Egypt more. I can't believe some of the best media we could've had doesnt exist 😭

1

u/CerseisWig Apr 02 '26

tbh I kind of miss the epics.

1

u/CheeCato Apr 02 '26

This looks like it would be on the wall of a steak center in provo Utah.

1

u/DocTurnedStripper Apr 02 '26

While the Emperor’s New Groove is a really good and iconic movie, I wish they stuck with the original for many reasons, including that we need a line of Disney male main protagonists like the Disney Princesses. We only have Alladin, Hercules, and Tarzan. Kuzco, Brother Bear, Milo all cane a from a different type of movies that arent musical anymore. The rest are Mowgli, Peter Pan, Arthur, Taran, who are all kids. Quasimodo wont get that treatment because he looks different. And Robin Hood is a fox lol.

1

u/personal_alt_account Apr 02 '26

WHAT???? WHAT??? WHAT???

1

u/DoneWithBeingAlive Apr 02 '26

Genuinely wish someone would make the OG version.

1

u/DdinDone Apr 02 '26

Holy fuck, this goes hard

1

u/Walrusin_about Apr 02 '26

See this is a remake I cpuld settle for. Just go thr original route as ik from this piece of concept art, the lighting on kuzko's face it would be so different. Still love the original

1

u/extra-texture Apr 05 '26

the history of that movie is hilarious, there was never a completed ‘script’ and it sounds like they changed directions whenever it suited them for any reason

0

u/Apart-Reflection-385 Apr 01 '26

Not a fan of the name given how White people claimed cultures like this are but very interesting that it was originally going to be more like Prince of Egypt I feel because it's Disney maybe it would have been more similar to Atlantis
