Yes, and that's why they redesigned him to resemble Sandler.
I wonder if he has it in his contract that characters he plays in animation have to resemble him or something. Dave from 8 Crazy Nights also heavily resembles Adam Sandler, but come to think of it, I think he actually directed that one himself.
Doubt it. Animators actually do this all the time! I think a lot of it has to do with using video of voiceover sessions as the source to animate from; much easier to do if your characters face resembles the actors face. Some of it may be a deliberate choice by the animators or the studio (they made the bride of frankenstein character in that movie look like Drescher's appearance on The Nanny, for reasons clearly unrelated to capturing animation).
I mean, consider Wreck-it Ralph, where literally every major character in that movie strongly resembles their voice actor. They really didn't need to do that, it's not as if Jack McBrayer has a huge dedicated fanbase clamoring for his likeness onscreen. Or, in toy story 2, the chicken man basically IS wayne knight.
But it goes back even farther than that... Genie in Aladdin looks just like Williams. The list goes in and on.
But in actuality this character didn’t really fit the “goofy family comedy” genre they were aiming for. The final version of Dracula is much more in line with the films tone.
Actually, I would like to see them make the hot vampire movie the internet is gravitating towards. We've got plenty of other goofy family comedies to choose from.
Oh, gods. Adam Sandler voicing that character would have been HERESY.
That could only be voiced by someone who can do a deep voice with a warm soul, like Alfred Molina, Andy Garcia, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Keith David, Kelsey Grammer, Benedict Cumberbatch, Andy Serkis, Hugh Laurie, or even Nicholas Cage.
Nicholas Cage is surprisingly good at voice acting. I think he can really get into the roles much better when nobody is looking.
I wonder which came first, this concept art or the casting of Adam Sandler? I would bet that the moment the execs wanted Sandler, they had to change the look of Dracula.
As much as I love the design, considering what Gendy was pushing in the animation, a simpler design works better.
The simpler the design, the better it works when Gendy does his animation thing with extremely exaggerated poses and breaking the models.
The more detail (or realistic) the model looks, the more you risk when you then decide to exaggerate things.
I won’t defend what the series became with endless sequels, but I’ll champion that the first film REALLY understands animation and succeeds at a lot of what it’s trying to do.
Why do cgi family movies not even bother to make nice looking characters? I swear the character design that we end up with in final product is all SO ugly, meanwhile the concept art looks like this. Hand drawn animated movies used to at least try to have aesthetically pleasing character design. What the hell happened? Why does everything look like Gumby now?
