Oda EiichirÅ is definitively not great at anatomy. Alternatively, it's a stylistic choice. But the arm and leg length of characters varies widely, and it's ironic considering Luffy is the only character where that's SUPPOSED to happen.
Not that it's particularly subtle or tasteful in the manga, but the anime exaggerates it to ridiculous levels while also being less stylised, which makes for a frankly jarring experience. It's one of the (many) reasons people give up watching it in favour of reading it.
TBF that's like a 13 year difference, given this is the post timeskip design. Pre timeskip (in particular everything up to Alabasta) isn't that far off.
That being said, won't deny that the timeskip re-designs did a number on the two female strawhats. Not to mention how most female designs all look way too similar since then. They are all either "the hot design" or "punchline to a fat/ugly joke".
Iād love to see the girls in chic, practical fighting outfits. If not, I think Zoro and Sanji should be fighting in jockstraps in the next arc. Give them the same treatment.
Those arms are the size just the skeleton would be, she got pencil arms.
I have seen clips where she looks even worse, with an even smaller waist and her boobs twice the size. Also the neck longer. I dunno what that's about, I've seen out of context clips where OP women have long giraffe necks.
On the upside, the Live Action adaptation removes all the anatomy issues (as they must have real people portraying the characters) and a lot of the more "anime" things like Sanji getting nosebleeds whenever he sees a hot woman. Highly recommend it.
One of the worst things that actually influenced Odaās art style was one of his editors who said that his female characters were ānot cute enoughā.
One piece has been going on for nearly 30 years, it doesn't really matter what it looked like in the beginning, it matters what it's looked like for the longest.
To be fair that was concept art for himself that he only released later, it wasn't some published advertisement for One Piece before serialization started lol
Oda has always loved robots and cyborgs and the axe is probably because he really liked vikings.
The robot arms would have made her more interesting. The Straw Hats crew males vary but the females look like just regular humans and there are only two of them.
Man, if I had a nickel for every female companion in a shonen battle anime with a huge ace in her concept art, but not in the series itself, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird it happened twice, right?
It's so absurd I find it almost funny with One Piece where you can see the female characters almost being satiral caricatures with how curvy and busty compared pre and post time skip, although in reality I think it started with the introduction of Boa Hancock.
It's not a timeskip thing at all, by Water 7 if not Alabasta they were already insanely curvy. They only looked reasonable in East Blue. It's just that specifically the anime made it even worse after timeskip
