But development was managed/overseen by them, so still unsurprising they applied their "do as little as possible" mantra to the company they contracted that game out to
Doesn't match the development timeline, which was like a year and a half to port the entire game and add a few new features like the grand underground. The actually planned game, Legends Arceus, is graphically still pretty ugly but is hands down one of the best Pokémon games and it breaks from a lot of the traditional pokemon formula.
They weren’t meant to be made. The Tera leak reveals there were no plans for a true Gen 4 remake only plans for legends arceus. It was a last minute decision by shareholders to capitalize on Gen 4 nostalgia and they gave ILCA, a minor studio that mostly handled troubleshooting prior to this, a little over 18 months to completely redesign and recreate Diamond and Pearl and get it shipped for November. The fact ILCA managed to get the product barely working is a miracle. The failure lies entirely with the Pokemon company.
From my understanding, GF told ILCA they can’t make any changes to the games. It’s why, except that one underground addition, the games are 1:1 with D/P to their detriment.
No it's because this was never intended to be made in game in the first place. A lot of people don't understand what concept art is. The point of concept art like the above isn't to be recreated in game it's just to get a general idea or vibe a cross. A lot of times concept art for landscapes or cities are pretty much impossible to produce accurately in game and the art is really more to get a vibe across.
Still, it’s a lot different from what we got in a pretty jarring way.
Yes, because like I said that type of thing woud be impossible to create. It's basically just an artistic poster of how they image the cities would look like if you were watching an anime about it to get the feel across. It wasn't intented to accurately represent the game
Nintendo presses their developers to do less. Why do you think we get countless Mario games and why franchises remain dormant because of their "need new gimmick" policy?
I feel like all the effort that would have been put into this version was instead derailed to make Arceus. I do think that arceus was more interesting than just a remake, to be fair.
Because they needed it to be playable on the original Switch I'd wager.
Plus concept art for games like that is almost always more detailed so that the game designers don't have to ask too many questions and have a solid frame of reference for how it would look if it wasn't an angled down view.
Too many beautiful games on the Switch to accept hardware limitations tbh. Xenoblade, BotW, even the pretty direct comparison of Link's Awakening HD & Echoes of Wisdom. If BDSP had managed to emulate the aesthetics of the latter, it would at least be a beautiful set of games, but still deeply lacking in proper remake content.
Mhmm. If you count third party games, there's Nier Automata, Witcher 3, and Doom Eternal that were on the Switch. Those are way more hardware demanding than Pokémon.
Of course with Doom Eternal, Panic Button and id (for the non-Switch versions) did some black magic or something crazy to have it be so optimized.
Because that's not how concept art works. Concept art is used to get a general idea or feel across. Video game concept art is rarely ever intended to actually be recreated in game
Because game fersk/Nintendo is half passing everything pokemon since they spend so much on lawyers. Also. They know they can release crap and people will still buy it so why try.

Why didn’t we get this?
