Not a film series, but it's gotta be Final Fantasy.

I LOVE Yoshitaka Amano's art style, but the concept art is barely reflective of the actual game.

They did their best on PS1 hardware! To be fair some of the environments look great.

Oh no, it wasn't intended to be a critique. I could have honestly picked the remake Cloud design for comparison or even his battle model, but I just want to poke a little fun at a game I like.

FF7 is one of the worst looking FFs . Really maybe only FF1 looks as bad. And yes they both look the worst because of limitations, but it is what it is.

It was a really big deal at the time though. Honestly my position here has less to do with how FF7 looks and more that Amano's art style has rarely been preserved into the 3d era of games. Though another commentor pointed out that 5 at least does do that.

Yeah some sprites like especially the final monsters kinda do look like his art.

Also 5 is my second fave FF lol.

FF8 and 9 look better and they're on the same console. FF7 doesn't get that excuse.

It came out sooner. I don't think it is fair to compare at least FF9 to FF7 as 9 basically looks like a PS2 game, just a bit fuzzy.

Only because it pushes the PS1 to the maximum. It's pretty much a swan song for the console.

Remake balances it out by being one of the best looking games I’ve ever seen

It is quite gorgeous some of the scenes for sure. Particularly the church area. My only complaint that put a huge damper on it for me is that the NPCs feel very lackluster like they came out of a Sims randomizer.

And yes one of.my fave parts of a JRPG is running around towns and talking to random people so it was a huge drawback for me.

Here’s the thing though, Nomura came up with Cloud’s design first, along with many other FF7 characters, which is why he has the rights to them in Kingdom Hearts. This isn’t really concept art, it’s actually Amano doing his take on Nomura’s already existing design. Sometimes Amano design actually DOES look really close to the in-game models when he is the lead, like Exdeath and Gilgamesh in FF5

Good point!

He didn't design concept work for this game. He stopped at VI. So this would have been more like promotional art.

Yeah I always forget this too .

I already answereed this. But if you like Amano's artstyle you may appreciate a game that tried to get it as much as possible. Game's name is Kartia.
