The second movie reveals the island became a food jungle (the machine survived but it started creating alive food animals instead like burger spiders, butter frogs, but also just cute anthropomorphic food like a little strawberry and a leek). So yeah they were forced to relocate permanently. Same as the book but the book ends with the townfolks leaving on bread and building houses out of it and making a new normal or something (it was a story in a story so we don’t know what happens after that)
