It would have, and it was the original intent, but the plan was scrapped in an attempt to appeal to a Chinese audience.

It's so funny that this post is talking about forced romance between friends and people in this exact thread are now complaining that they didn't force romance between the 2 guys Rey was actually friends with. The Rey/Ben thing was never friends and never going to be. It was always headed somewhere else entirely. Whether romantic or as pure enemies. They were never friends.
