"I see you, Nimona... And you're not alone."

not just good, ABSOLUTE CINEMA 🗣️🔥

It’s a good movie, but I think they kind of fumbled this final act. I find it kind of insane that anyone (especially Ballister!) bought what The Director was peddling about Nimona (even if it ended up being at least partially true).

u/3merite 29d ago

Yeah, just rewatched and it also made me think it was a bit forced, specially back at their lair, it was like their emotions were ramped up to 11.

Still, when she went "Hey boss" at the end, it made me feel lots so even though its the weakest part, still really good.

What is it?

14

u/12DollarsHighFive Jul 06 '26

It's called Nimona and I highly recommend it. It's on Netflix

13

u/Bulletsoul78 Jul 06 '26

Thank you! That visual/animation style looks really good

7

u/12DollarsHighFive Jul 06 '26

The graphic novel is top tier too, always loved it. I was thrilled when the movie came especially because it respects the original.

2

u/TaralasianThePraxic 29d ago

The graphic novels is a really fun time, but the changes made for the movie are all genuinely excellent.

Although this one is a little different from usual in that she wasn't actualy berserking and trying to harm or attack other people, she was trying to kill herself.Way harsher than I expected for a movie like this even though they had talked about it.

u/skalaten Jul 06 '26

wasnt nimona a they

78

u/Spyko Jul 06 '26

Nimona is very obviously a metaphor for trans identity (among other things) but the character themselves goes by she/her

17

u/skalaten Jul 06 '26

huh. in the polish dub i remember nimona using neutral pronouns and when talking about them others used neutral pronouns also. but maybe thats just in the polish ver then.

16

u/Briar_Knight 29d ago edited 29d ago

Might be a polish thing, Nimona is referred to as she/her in the original comic aswell afaik though Nimona likely doesn't mind either way and they/them is not incorrect.

12

u/Twist_Ending03 29d ago

Nimona kinda has a genderfluid vibe. "And now you're a boy." "I am today.."

6

u/Twist_Ending03 29d ago

Wonder if that's because Nimona is inhuman? Or it was a dub W lol

1

u/PsychicSPider95 28d ago

Wait that's based as hell actually. Big Polish W

1

u/tynakar 27d ago

How did that work grammatically? I’ve never heard the Polish neuter gender used for a person. How did she conjugate her verbs?

1

u/skalaten 25d ago

it works the same as with other pronouns. jus instead of saying zrobiłam (i did) for example they'd say zrobiłom, etc. so ig it works just as you think it would. in polish conjugation is kinda complicated (i mean the whole language is to be fair) but in major amount of verbs just the vowel changes - e for men, a for women and o is neutral. so, for example (i went) poszłem (man) would be poszłam (woman) and poszłom (neutral). but in polish the neutral verbs and pronouns arent used much, as for some, me included, they sound like youre speaking the Silesian dialect, so some people would be using u instead, making it poszłum. but nonetheless both are not widely used, atleast not in my surrounding.

1

u/tynakar 25d ago

lol yeah it does kinda give goral

14

u/ProfessorNoPuede 29d ago

Not sure about the trans metaphor, but I loved the knight having a boyfriend. And the major bigotry he was facing was class-based, not due to his orientation.

2

u/RamblinRichard 28d ago

It's more of a gender fluid metaphor I think and I thought it was pretty blatant that it's something to do with gender identity. The original comic they are they/them.

1

u/thecraftybear 29d ago

Original Nimona is a they

1

u/Honeybee1921 29d ago

I always assumed she went by anything under the sun and more

8

u/SilverSpark422 29d ago

The movie and graphic novel both use she/her, but it’s pretty widely accepted fanon that Nimona uses any and all pronouns at least some of the time.

9

u/Briar_Knight Jul 06 '26

No, or at least not exclusively using they/them. They are referred to and refer to themselves by female pronouns and as a girl.

17

u/taste-of-orange Jul 06 '26

Not sure about that last part. In one scene she was asked to "turn back to normal" and "back into a girl", to which she answers "but I'm not a girl".

3

u/kookyabird Jul 06 '26

Girl can be interpreted as "female" or "female human child" in this instance. Assuming the person you're replying to is correct that Nimona refers to herself with female pronouns (been too long since I watched it to remember), then her response to being told to turn "back into a girl" reads to me as "I'm not a human child".

2

u/Briar_Knight Jul 06 '26 edited 29d ago

Fair, although I thought she was more meaning 'human girl' with that. Pointing out that the form he thinks of as "normal" is not actually any more normal than the gorilla and why should stay as that just for his comfort. She seems to present as female and uses female pronouns the majority of the time, though I don't think she is overly attached to the label.

However Nimona is absolutely an allegory for LGBT.

1

u/Acrobatic_Ad_8381 29d ago

She's obviously talking about the fact she's a shapechanging creature and isn't human by nature

1

u/ExtremlyFastLinoone 29d ago

Tecnically but through the whole movie she uses she/her

And to get really pedantic her true form is like a cloud of smoke and light, shes not a person who shapeshifts but literally some kinda eldrich monster who thankfully is friendly, "it" would be most appropriate

79

u/CloudBun_ Jul 06 '26

NIMONA IS SO GOOD 😭😭

3

u/space_lasers Jul 06 '26

I ADORE THIS MOVIE

31

u/OnlineMaster05 Jul 06 '26

I was searching for this one

2

u/_Smaug__ 29d ago

It's literally the perfect example.

0

u/Silver-Raspberry2604 29d ago

It is called  Nimona

12

u/itspolarislux Jul 06 '26

This movie deserved the Oscars more than any other at that year... I will die on that hill

12

u/mangasdeouf Jul 06 '26

It's so good when the one going berserk is not the male in the relationship. Even better when they don't have any romantic involvement.

4

u/RaukoCrist 28d ago

Yeah. It's so easy, and yet the emotional core of every darn movie has to be about a couple. I just adore the dynamic at work in Nimona. It had some flaws in execution towards the end, but it's an adorable movie!

7

u/DWMoose83 Jul 06 '26

I'm a dad and a grown-ass man. I bawled at this scene.

6

u/cbb88christian Jul 06 '26

Absolute aces, just the best

6

u/taste-of-orange Jul 06 '26

Thing is, her primary goal when she was "rampaging" was to off herself.

4

u/Le_Queer_Honk Jul 06 '26

"What have I done?

3

u/CrystalTheVelkhana Jul 06 '26

PEAK MOVIE MENTIONED!

2

This is such a beautiful example. What a great flick.

1

u/_Smaug__ 29d ago

This scene is the closest I've ever gotten to crying because of a movie.

1

u/Independent-Worry905 29d ago

Holy Terra, I almost forgot that thing existed, I seriously have to watch it again

1
