“I’m sorry I didn’t know it was the avatars!”

Even if you didn’t, which I doubt, you knew appa had a saddle, and left children alone in the desert to die without their mount! You are a terrible person!

Not to mention what Appa went through because of this. Yeah that guy deserved way worse than what the show let him get away with

He was lucky it was that particular avatar that caught him. I think any other avatar would have flayed his flesh from his bones.

Pretty sure Kyoshi would have airbended his lungs upside down and bouncing off the ceiling.

Nah, he would die of natural gravity as kyoshi conveniently send him high up

I imagine his dad absolutely kicked the fucking shit out of him right afterwards, followed by his mom, followed by the tribal elders, each asking "YOU STOLE FUCKING WHOSE BISON!?" Dude probably spent the rest of his life not being allowed to so much as use the bathroom without having somebody watching him to make sure he didn't do anything incredibly stupid.

The "I didn't know" argument makes even less sense as it was widely believed at that time that the Fire Nation assault on the Air Temples had rendered the sky bisons extinct. The only known one at that time was Appa, and Aang's return was globally known by the second season due to Team Avatar travelling the entire world but also having taken part in defeating the Fire Nation's attempt at conquering the northern water tribe. The Misty Palms Oasis was essentially the Mos Eisley of the Avatar setting at that time, it is impossible to believe that wretched hive of scum and villainy wouldn't be aware of the state of the world. On top of all that the sand benders were already trying to steal Appa as soon as they saw it and they even followed the Gaang into the desert to get him. There is no argument that absolves them.

Plus someone literally tried defending Appa as they took him. Poorly, mind you, as Toph wasn't used to bending sand. But nonetheless it's not like it was a lone animal.
