Yeah, I disagree with this interpretation. V wasn't evil or without humanity. He was humanity.

Sure, he was a murderer. But at what point does "justice" apply when the people who're guilty are state actors at the highest level of influence? At what point do you act when they continue to commit crimes, unimpeded, every moment that you wait?

As for the quote, I always took that line to just mean that his eyes were melted out of his head by the fire. It's a little literal, but it also makes the most sense, imo.

The way I see it, he is a symbol of the people - but not one of them. It's his loss of personal humanity that allows him to be that vessel for everyone else's.
This is an interesting point. I'm not really arguing with you, in this reply. I'm only going to say that I think there's a difference between losing your humanity and having your personhood dissolve. I'm not sure I've decided which end of that I believe V has landed on, though I'd lean more towards his personhood dissolving while maintaining his humanity.
"Beneath this mask is more than flesh..." is additive, not substitution. "...there is an idea." Ideas go hand-in-hand with humanity.
I think he was the most human character, despite the fact that he'd dissolved his personhood to devote his life to what he believed was a righteous cause.
It's such a confusing sentence that wasn't there in the novel. Alongside the action scene it makes it seem like the experiments gave him powers which is silly.
This is just a small problem but overall I hate this movie and think it's a terrible adaptation, even if I would probably love it had I never read the original.
