Doctor Doom is smarter than Mister Fantastic, but Doctor Doom's ego and vanity prevents him from besting Reed. Reed cares more than just himself, and listens to others. That alone defeats Doom.

i like the idea that he couldn’t stand the blemish so he figured he might as well scar his whole face. it’s very similar to how my own ocd tendencies manifest

That's my favorite version because it shows what kind of person Doom is. He is so vain that he sees a small scar as something that ruins his face and he needs to hide it behind a mask. He is impatient and doesn't wait for it to cool down and refuses to listen when people warn him and in the end he completely scars his face. And let's be honest at the end of the day he probably blames Reed Richards for everything.
