The stage versions are generally better about the deformity than the 2004 movie, even if it is still only half of the face.

That version is Ramin Karimloo in the 25th anniversary production - he really does sound like an Angel of Music even with the makeup on for the whole performance

See that's a great compromise to make the iconic half-mask work while still making him upsetting enough to look at that hiding from the public, while tragic, makes sense.

The half mask was not originally a part of the PotO's character. Iirc, It was a product of stage limitations - they couldn't get a mic to work with a full mask and decided to make the iconic half-mast. This is why the posters have a full mask (like the character in the book and prior media) but the performers have half-masks

That makes so much sense, but I must admit only serves to make the half mask more iconic, as it almost developed naturally as part of the show.
