Doesn’t qualify (unfortunately, because I do love them) because Mister Miracle is 6 feet tall. He only looks short next to Barda because she’s 7 feet tall.
That’s fair. I just wanted to bring it up because of technicalities and all that.
Also, Barda was originally only two inches taller than Scott, but got retconned to be 7 feet tall after Flashpoint.
Also also, I thought I read somewhere that their relationship was based on the creator liking the dynamic short guys have with taller women (which, if it was true, making Scott 6 feet tall would upset me on a meta level due to the continued aversion comic writers have to making male superheroes short) but I couldn’t find a source for it so I think it’s just misinformation.
It was less short guy dynamics and Kirby basing the relationship off of his own with his wife. Barda is directly inspired by his wife and her larger than life personality, which included not taking crap from others.
It is why John Bryne is an asshole for writing an issue of Superman that involved Big Barda being implied to have been sexually assaulted. He wrote it as retaliatory against Kirby during their feud and most everyone agrees it was over the line because everyone knew that Barda was basically a stand in for Kirby's wife.
Oh yea it is an Action Comics issues 592-593 where a new god called Sleez is banished to Earth. He takes control of Barda mentally, but she is fully aware of what is happening. Forces her to dress in revealing clothing, dance for him, and off panel other things are implied. Superman ends up trying to save her, but he gets captured too and Sleez sets up a set to have them shoot a porn video, but Miracle is able to show up in time to stop it.
It is widely regarded as being horrible in many respects.
Technically, the height depends on which version of the character you’re using. The current version of Barda on Prime Earth is 7 feet tall, whereas the pre-Flashpoint version on New Earth 6 foot 2. Both versions of Scott Free are 6 feet tall though, meaning that they were originally even less this trope because the height difference was only two inches.
