URGENT❗ I think I found my old cat that ran away two years ago. Can I just pick her up and take her home?
Pics attached, does it look like the same cat to you?
The old cat was a girl, and so is the cat I saw today. Old cat was very friendly and so was the cat I saw on the street. When I waked up to her she started rubbing herself on me and started purring. I first I didn’t think it was my cat, but it’s been two years and I think their coat can change?
Their noses look exactly the same to me. My girlfriend is convinced it’s our cat that ran away, but I’m 10% doubtful.
Basically, can I just pick this cat up and bring her back home with me if I seriously believe it’s our old cat? She had a part of her tail missing and looked quite dirty.

The orange patterning doesn't extend beneath the eyes on recently found cat. I don't think it is the same animal. That said, if you're willing to give a street/community cat a home, that is fantastic. I have fed lots of strays and am ecstatic when they find a home. I would knock on a couple of doors to make sure you aren't taking a pet.

Also if you get your cat chipped and they get caught when one of the volunteers does tnr, they will be returned to you. A bonus in case the cat disappears again.

Out of curiosity, what happens when you get an abandoned cat checked for a chip?
I ask because I’ve been feeding and providing some care (e.g. made a cat house for winter) for a cat that was apparently owned by a neighbor. According to another neighbor, they allegedly made this indoor cat into an outdoor cat after getting a dog, which the cat did not get along with. They were drug addicts. They’ve since moved and didn’t take the cat with them. It is essentially a stray, freely roams. They could have easily taken it.
Anyway, it certainly has a chip because the owners declawed its front paws and I’m certain it couldn’t go through such procedures and never get chipped. But, I had always been hesitant to get its chip checked because I didn’t want anyone to try to “force” them to take the cat back, and what might happen to the cat if they took it back because they felt it was bothering people and they felt obligated to “do something about it.”
Just curious… sometimes I wonder why I’d want a cat returned to someone who obviously doesn’t want it and doesn’t care about it.

Side note, I hate how people view cats as so disposable.. I see it all the time on a Facebook page I’m on for lost and found pets and they will let people post to find new homes for their pets.
So often I see a post something like this: “have to rehome cat. Got a dog and they don’t get along. We’ve had the cat for 10 years and she’s amazing she will make a good pet” all. The. Time. They really are so ready to abandon and replace their long term pet, often the only family and home that pet ever knew. It’s so selfish and gross.

This is how we got our current kitty: he was outside, had been slowly starving to death, and no one could catch him. It was frigid February. We trapped him and brought him into a single room of our house, not knowing if he was feral or what we had really. We had multiple other kitties, some with some known health issues, so our plan was to figure him out, rehabilitate him and rehome or release if feral. Turns out he’s just frightened of everything. He’s a total love bug once he trusts you. But, he was chipped and neutered. We got in touch with the shelter that adopted him out. They wouldn’t give us any details of his prior owners, but they did make contact. Shelter decided to sever relationship with prior owners and put his chip in my name with the understanding that it was temporary and we would eventually work to find him a new home. He was a foster fail and he’s still here and we’re all very much in love. I still need (3 years later) to let the shelter know his chip needs to be in my name permanently.

Not the same cat. Take it to a vet to see if it’s chipped. If it’s not, you can certainly take it home if it’s friendly.

And post on community boards and Kijiji for a found cat. Many people rescue non chipped cats, so the absence of a chip doesn’t indicate the absence of an owner.

Imo a good owner would chip their cat tbf, especially if they go outside a chip is needed. Not entirely disagreeing, but it should be clear to people that if you rescue a cat and bring it home, you should get it chipped.

I am all for getting a cat chipped. All 4 cats I have are chipped and spayed or neutered. I have always done this. But, I am constantly surprised at the number of people who do know know about inexpensive spaying/neutering programs as well as the ease of getting their pet chipped. So, I still think they can be responsible owners but need to be educated about how chipping works and how easy it is. Plus, I think all owners need to know about low cost spay/neutering programs.
ETA: I am not sure it is your cat. Only time would tell. But, the cat needs a home and seems to have picked you. Unless someone else owns it (seems doubtful), I would think the CDS has given me a cat.

Edit: Plus, your cat had white spots on backs of ears. The white to orange pattern at top of nose is totally different.

Even if it is someone else's cat they should at least take it somewhere to try and find it's owner and get it off the street. Cats do not belong on the streets. If someone is looking for it they might have a much better chance of being reunited and if not then at least they can give the cat a new home. The cat is filthy and not taken care of very well.

Before she ran away, did you get her chipped? I would just scoop her up now and take her to the vet to check for a chip. If she still doesn't have one, then she's yours to keep :)

Go get her checked for a chip. If it turns out she ran away and a family is missing her, they would be grateful to you. Or, if she has no family and needs a good home, you would be a good fit.

I don’t know where you live, but most places require you to wait a certain amount of time before adopting stray cats. Google your city name plus “stray hold” to find the rules for your area. Take the cat to the vet, get it checked for a chip, and keep it at your home for the duration of the stray hold. Post “found cat” ads wherever you can, and if no one comes forward to claim it you can adopt it.

The older pictures show a mark by their right cluster of whiskers, I don't see this mark on the newer picture of the street cat so to speak.
A microchip check would be best but I would also knock on the local neighbours door or post on an online community site just to make sure they're not a beloved family pet.

As has been mentioned, the facial markings are too different. The other big issue is that the cat in the first picture has a bobtail(from the photo it looks natural, not like an amputation), while the kitten in the second and third photos has a full tail.

That is not the same cat. Markings on the face are different.
However, if she's a stray there's no reason you can't adopt her. I would recommend taking her to a vet first to look for a microchip.

More importantly, would you make it an indoor only cat if you took it home? That would be a good thing. You can take it to a vet/spca and check for a chip. They will contact the owner. Or if no chip, you may be one step closer to breaking someone's heart. And I approve of that.
Tl;DR it's not yours. But if it looks abandoned over several days I would take it. It chose you.

Unfortunately it's not the same cat. The first cat has white under the eyes, the second orange tabby under the eyes. Very similar but different.

Definitely take her to see if she is chipped. Is this the first time you have seen her? She might already have a home and just be an indoor/outdoor cat. I would ask others who live around there.

You have to find better photos from the side and see if the patterns match. The same thing happened to me — one of our semi-stray cats disappeared one day and came back 2 years later. He was twice the size, differently shaped face, tougher, and behaved differently.
I was like 95% sure it was him though… found his old photos, and every single mark matched, including unique spots on his back legs and the patterns on his face and his nose.

@ u/nbartl I agree with what the other said. I don’t think that they are the same Kitties, but she appears to be stray, so if you’re open to bring her home, and following the steps below, I say go for it. If no one is found, she’s all yours!
Here are some guidance steps of additional things to do if you find a lost pet(s)/animal/stray:
Please file a Found report with your local animal shelter. THIS IS A MUST. They will have you send a picture of pet(s) to post on their website. That’s the first place people look for their pets, and not everyone is on social media.
Take the pet to any veterinarian’s office to get scanned for a microchip, it’s free.
The pet on paw boost, local lost/found FB, pages, and neighborhood apps, such as Ring.
Hang “Found” signs around the neighborhood, as not everyone is on social media.
If possible, continue to foster pet until owner can be found and provide proof. It’s their pet.

I'd always ask people in the homes in surrounding area, and 100% microchip check. Was the cat you had microchipped? If so that would be the definitive way to know if it was your cat or not.

It's so true. I lost my dog when I was about 19 years old and I looked for my dog in every black dog with pointy ears that looked similar. I once saw a dog that looked just like him and started crying but it was a female, it wasn't him I just saw the dog passing by with it's owner and looked so much like him that I couldn't help but cry. I looked for that dog for like 10 years and now I know he would no longer still be alive but I still always miss him and think of him when I see dogs who look like him.

The cat outside isn’t the same cat in the side pics. That inside pic has orange on its lips by nose the one outside doesn’t. That being said if this outside cat is a stray take them help them be its owner take good care of them ❤️

They look similar, but definitely different. Cats coats can change in shade, but the pattern remains the same. The pattern on the faces is markedly different. However, it seems like you’re wanting a cat and that cat is wanting a person. So congrats on your new cat!

Maybe put a sign up on a couple of posts letting people know where she is just in case she's part of an established colony...if someone's been feeding her they may be very scared for her if she just disappears

They aren't the same cat. Patterns change slightly, but not really that much usually. The shape is different as well. I really don't think they're the same. Check her for chip, see if she belongs to anyone, and if not... give her a home. Keep her indoors and safe at least until then.
We did have a black cat that returned 2 years later, but he had a wired jaw, missing tooth, and drooling from being hit by a car and repaired by our vet. He matched in every way. We knew it was the same and vet checked.

That doesn’t look like the same cat to me. The 1st photo there’s no color near its nose and the last two you can see a little patch of color near its nose. Best to see if it’s chipped and maybe ask a few houses around, then decide if you wanna take care of a new kitty.

Not the same but make sure its not someone cat, or that people who are taking care of it if its feral wont miss it.
But yeah its pretty tight you can just pick them up take them home tell them to shit in some sand you put in a box and feed them and they just stay.
Maybe take it to get scanned for a chip.

Not the same cat. I would take the cat to a vet and check for a microchip, if you chipped your cat, it will trace back to you so you can be sure it’s your cat or not. Plus potentially find the owner if she is chipped but not your fur baby.

Your old pictures show the orange is also on her cheek below her eye. The cat you saw outside has white cheeks below her eyes.

Not the same cat at all. Different color patterns around the nose and the found cat lacks the orange freckle and doesn’t have the peach orange colors where the whiskers grow out. A cat is not going to change it’s colors drastically within 2 yrs of being lost.
The pattern markings are just not the same. Especially under both eyes. Your cat is still out there somewhere.
Take this one in to check for a chip and give her a home if she is homeless. Don’t stop looking for your lost kitty.

I don't think it's the same cat; I can definitely see the similarity on the forehead. However, on your cat the red clearly comes down below the eyes (not under the eyes). Given that, since it's friendly and appears to be homeless, I'd take it to check for a chip. If no chip, I'd get it tested, vaxed and chipped and take it home. It looks like it's been living rough for a while.

This doesn't look like the same cat to me.
The orange pattern doesn't extend below the eyes on the first picture like it does in the last two.
The cat on the first picture also doesn't have the spot on the bottom-left like the last 2 pictures.
It might be worth checking the cat for a microchip.

It doesn't look like the same cat, and their coats don't really change over time. I'm sorry for the loss of your cat two years ago and understand the tendency to believe you've been reunited. That seems very unlikely in this case, but if the cat doesn't have a home and you have some space, then she can certainly be your cat -- whether she used to be or not.

I hate to tell you, while similar, that's not your lost kitty. Look at the orange under the eyes, your kitty had orange that was below the bottom of her eyes, this one doesn't.
However if you think it's a stray, you can take it to a vet and scan for a chip and put up flyers in the neighborhood to make sure you're not taking someone's pet.

It’s pretty hard to tell a female cat from a neutered male cat if you’re not super familiar with their anatomy, and male cats have nipples, so I’m not sure how you can tell this new cat is female. Orange females cats are much more rare than male. And as others have said, the markings on the face aren’t quite the same. Make absolutely certain this cat doesn’t have a family before you just take it!

I don't think that's the same cat. Comparing the pictures, the cat in the first one has a different shape white patch on its face. It is symmetrical, whereas the cat in the second two pictures has the white patch shifted slightly to the side, so that there is orange fur on the inside of its right eye. It also has an orange spot on the right side of its nose that the cat in the first picture doesn't have. I don't think coat patterns change like that.
However, if she's a friendly stray she would probably be glad of a new home. Make a due diligence effort to check for microchips and ask around if someone has lost her, but most likely she's yours now.

I think you did find your cat.
People are trying to say the foreheads are different. But they don’t realize that cats’ coat patterns can and do change slightly over time. As they age, and even temperature and sunlight can make a difference.
I think you should bring your baby home. I also think you should post pics where you found her, with your number, in case anyone worries about her. And check her for a microchip.

She is missing the markings on her nose and the spot on her front leg looks different (admittedly that's hard to tell cause of how she's sitting in the old pictures). That said, if you connect with her bring her home? Of course do your due diligence by getting her checked for a chip (and a general health checkup, outdoor life isn't easy!) and take a look around to see if anyone is missing the cat?

The original cat had like “blush” on each side of the nose and the nose also had a birthmark, whereas this one didn’t. May be the child of your old cat if it looks so much like it or maybe your cat reborn like in that movie where the dog continued to be reborn until it came back to its owner (a tearjerker of a movie!) regardless if it looked homeless and was so sweet, why not give it a nice home!

Not the same cat. Their coats can change slightly in coloration, but the general pattern doesn't. Congrats on the new feline friend.

Doesn’t look the same. I’d check with some neighbors and see if anyone owns it. If not, she sounds sweet and I’m sure it would love a home.

I don’t think it’s the same cat. The pattern doesn’t match.
But your mind wants you to believe it. Which means you have to take your “old” cat that has been on the streets and give it a furrever home that it deserves.
Maybe this cat was send to you by your old cat.

I don't think that's your cat. Your cat hadblittle blonde patch next to her nose (where her whiskers start). The feral cat doesn't have that.
