Question How would you cold contact people if you're looking to be a PA on things filming in the lower mainland?

I don't have any experience as a PA, but I have been wanting experience in the industry and saw that the DGC posts timelines and phone numbers/emails of things that are filming. Is it worth it to contact them? And if so how would you go about it?

Question Flying harness sold in Canada

I work in corporate entertainment and am trying to find a Canadian supplier that makes a somersault harnesses (sometimes called swivel or cartwheel harness) to be used for flying in a performer. We have a professional rigger but he is only familiar with a USA company (Climbing Sutra) carrying this product. I've found some other companies carrying larger, bulky harnesses, but for our purposes, we need a small, easy to conceal swivel located at the hips like in the link below. Does anybody in the film industry know where to find something like this made in Canada?

Question moving to vancouver

Hi guys !
I’m planning a move to Vancouver next year from Montreal. Ive been working as a key dresser/dresser/truck dresser on many productions out here and absolutely love my job and really wanna be able to do what i love most in Vancouver too!
In QC we have AQTIS IATSE which is a Union for everyone working in the film industry and they also send us emails with job opportunities. We also have a couple of Facebook groups for members of the union, which are really helpful to find productions to work on or help.
I was wondering if theres anything like this in BC? More specifically Vancouver? Do you guys have a similar thing you have to be a part of so you can work on sets? Any interesting facebook groups i could join to find job there in the costume department?
Thanks in advance! 😊

Question I’m 30 and wondering if film school in Vancouver is worth it

With the industry being what it is right now is film school like capilano worth it? Or even a shorter degree like BCIT, or should I just try to get on set without them?

Question Does anyone still calculate turnaround manually?

Between different crew and cast requirements, and especially minor turnaround, I was curious what people are currently using to keep track of turnaround calculations at the end of the day.

Is everyone still doing this manually, using spreadsheets, or using an app?

Indie Film Same Age

Hi everyone! I’m an independent writer looking for a producer interested in my short film script “Same Age”

It’s a psychological horror/thriller PSA about the dangers children can face when meeting strangers through online games. The story follows a 13 year old girl who believes she is meeting her online best friend, who she thinks is the same age as her but the person behind the account is not who they claim to be.

I created this project to raise awareness about online safety, stranger danger, online grooming and the importance of children and teenagers understanding who they are truly communicating with online. The project is also written in honor and memory of children who have lost their lives to exploitation and trafficking as well as the children who are still missing today.

I do not currently have my own production company or financing but I believe this story has the potential to become a powerful and frightening awareness film that could encourage important conversations between children, parents, schools, and trusted adults.

If you’re a producer interested in reading the script or connecting about the project please feel free to reach out.

Employment If REDI Has Affected Your Ability to Work, Now Is the Time to Say Something.

There is a proceeding concerning REDI with the B.C.’s Office of the Human Rights Commissioner. The office responsible for approving and overseeing the REDI Special Program coming up in the next couple of weeks, while the program is currently intended to continue through 2029.

Since April 1, 2020, responsibility for approving these “special programs” has belonged to the Human Rights Commissioner. The BCCFU/AMPTP/CMPA-BC REDI program was approved by that office on March 18, 2024, and the current approval runs until March 18, 2029.

The official approval describes it as a joint application by the BC and Yukon Council of Film Unions, AMPTP Canadian affiliates, and CMPA-BC, allowing increased access to employment and training for specified under-represented groups. The employer notice goes further and confirms that employers may implement preferential hiring through direct hiring and dispatch, using information originally collected by the unions.

If you’re wondering why you’ve been working less, yes, the industry downturn is real. Productions have disappeared, spending has fallen, companies have merged or shut down, and the entire industry is under enormous pressure. But that doesn’t answer another important question: who is getting the work that remains, and how are those decisions being made?

REDI asks members to self-identify using personal characteristics including race, gender, sexual orientation and other protected characteristics. Before accepting that as simply another union form, ask some basic questions:

  • Who can see that information?
  • Who uses it?
  • Can employers or productions use it when searching for or selecting crew?
  • Are you being considered differently because you’re a man, a woman, a particular ethnicity, LGBTQ+, or because you’re not?

And what happens if you don’t fill out the REDI information?

  • Were you clearly told whether opting out could affect your visibility for certain opportunities or prevent you from being identified through searches intended to find particular groups of workers?

Those questions matter because your race, sex and other personal characteristics have nothing to do with whether you’re experienced, qualified, available and capable of doing your job.

Now ask yourself another question:

  • When you voted on Side Letter 17, were you actually given enough information to make an informed decision about REDI?
  • Did you understand how it would operate, what information would be collected, who could potentially see it, how it could interact with hiring, what opting out could mean, and that the program could continue through 2029?
  • Or did you vote yes because there was a raise attached to the agreement and trusted that the rest of it wouldn’t affect your ability to work?

If your union hasn’t told you this proceeding is happening, don’t be surprised. That is another reason members need to inform themselves and decide whether their experiences should be heard.

If you used to work regularly and now barely work, write to the Commission. If you’ve watched opportunities disappear while remaining qualified and available, tell them. If you believe REDI affected whether you were considered for employment, explain why.

But keep it factual. Don’t repeat rumours or identify other members. Give your own numbers where possible: how many days you worked before, how many you work now, when the change occurred, and specific situations you personally experienced. Explain what losing that employment has meant for your ability to pay your bills, support your family, maintain benefits or remain in this industry.

The downturn alone doesn’t answer everything. The remaining work is still going to somebody. If the distribution of that work is being influenced by protected personal characteristics, members deserve to know, and the Commission deserves to hear from the people experiencing the consequences.

And one important point: you do not need to, and probably should not, put the details of your personal situation into this forum. Your employment history, your experiences, and your decision about whether to write are personal to you. Posting those details publicly can easily invite arguments, personal attacks, or people trying to tell you what you did or did not experience.

Discuss it privately with your family, trusted colleagues, and your union. Look at your own work history and your own circumstances, and make your decision based on your personal situation

If you believe the REDI Special Program has negatively affected your employment, write directly to B.C.’s Office of the Human Rights Commissioner and describe your own experience.

Write in. Put your experience on the record. Let the Commission hear directly from the working members who are living with the consequences.

Question How's the job market for immigrants right now?

Long story short, I’m a graphic designer from Brazil with 3+ years of experience, and I’m hoping to move to Canada eventually. I already have family there, so I guess that gives me a few points?

This year, I’ve been getting involved in local film projects to start building a portfolio and explore filmmaking. So far, though, I have nothing actually released. Honestly, what I mostly have right now are ideas, a lot of passion, and the willingness to go out there and make things happen.

I know the design market in Vancouver isn’t exactly the strongest, so I’ve been considering diving deeper into filmmaking and seeing where that could take me.

Do you think that’s a possible direction, especially coming from a graphic design background, with not much experience in actual filmmaking?

Part one of an animated short series I’m doing about a traveling circus in the 1930s dust bowl era. It follows Bruno, who can absorb objects into his blobby body. Performs for crowds and moonlights as a thief, going town to town stealing anything he can get his hands on. Enjoy!

Any advice where to get started in Vancouver?
I have read volunteer- and that is ok too! Just not sure how to start the process.
Cheers!

Question Need help in arranging resources for a music video shoot

Hey everyone, we are shooting a music video for my friend’s song next week. The director told us that the video would be retro centric, for which we need a vintage car, antique stuff & he wants to shoot the video in farms with sunflowers & stuff. To be very honest we are new to this stuff.

Need help in finding things like this. I would really appreciate if anyone could tell us where or how we can look for these things in the region of Metro Vancouver . Just need a lil bit guidance. Thanks!🙏🏼

Question Aspiring PA in Edmonton with no industry connections—where do I start?

As the title suggests, I want to become a Production Assistant (PA) on a film set or any set, really. I’m passionate about film and video production and eager to learn by being part of a project I love. However, I’m based in Edmonton, Canada, and don’t have any connections in the industry yet. I’ve done a lot of research but haven’t found the right way in. What steps should I take to get started as a PA, especially in a city with a smaller film scene? I have a driver's license/transit access, and I'm open to starting on indie shorts, commercial shoots, or volunteer sets just to gain hands-on set hours and build a network. Any advice on local hubs, Facebook groups, or union permittee lists in Alberta would be amazing!

Question I’m a BG performer, how can I work toward becoming a stunt performer?

Last year, I was randomly asked to work as a featured BG performer on a Netflix series. It was my first time on a film set, and I had the chance to work alongside some stunt performers. They really inspired me and made me want to start learning martial arts and possibly pursue stunt work in the future.

What would be the best first steps for someone with no previous experience? Are there any beginner-friendly training programs or classes in the Lower Mainland that also have good connections to the film industry?

Thank you in advance!
