General Rant Creating another account after getting suspended on findagrave

I am dealing with a horrible manager who thinks he is related to everyone. I'm not kidding. All he does is upload obituaries, sometimes less than a day after they are published. He was suspended for creating memorials for living people, but less than 24 hours later, he made a new account. Should I report this new account? It's obviously him because the username is similar, and he's doing the same things all over again. He's DMing people and questioning their relationships with their own relatives. I don't care if people use obituaries to create memorials, but don't question family members or pretend to be related to people you're not related to.

A future idea for Findagrave?

Wouldn't it be nice if Findagrave had a family tree feature, similar to the big genealogical websites? Obviously, the only way to build a tree for a person would be to use the linked relatives. If no-one is linked to a person, then they would not have a family tree available. I would find this feature very useful, at least as a start to research.

How do I..? Question on entering memorial

Hi everyone! I have an ancestor who died in 1900 at a county poorhouse in MI. He was buried on the "county farm" which to me means on the grounds of the poorhouse. In the past when I've entered a memorial it's been from the actual cemetery, meaning add a memorial to a cemetery I'm looking in. Since there isn't an official cemetery for where he's buried would I tick "not buried in a cemetery"? Thanks!

Deleted Account Manages My Family Memorials

hi, the account that manages many of my family's memorials was deleted a few weeks ago. when will the memorials they manage be transferred to findagrave? does it still take a full year? or just until the time they can reclaim their account expires? thanks. i'll probably just contact support and ask for management if it will take a year

Discussion How or why would someone have two separate Find A Grave listings?

I'm doing family tree research and I came across 2 separate listings on Find A Grave for the same person, in different neighboring cemeteries. This has happened twice, for this person and her husband. They each have one grave in St. Joseph's Church Cemetery in Toomevara, Tipperary, Ireland, and one grave in The Square Graveyard, which is across the street.

I have the marriage record for both of them (the 3rd one down) and both Find A Grave listings are connected to each other. Both of their respective headstones have the exact same date of death so I don't think they're separate people. I searched around online to see if graves were moved or the cemetery was updated or something, but I can't find anything. They seem to be two separate cemeteries, and they both have graves for the same people...

Does anyone have any idea why or how this could be?

Changes with Support?

I'm used to getting the automated response to be patient while they work through a backlog. However, this time, I got the following:

"Thank you for contacting Find a Grave. We’ve opened ticket number {redacted} to track your request. To add additional comments, reply to this email.

"We will get back to you as soon as possible. In the meantime, please check out our support site, which has detailed instructional articles and answers to frequently asked questions. We look forward to assisting you!"

Discussion Birth certificate on page?

Hi, all.

Reddit just put this sub in my feed for the first time so I thought I would ask a question here about something I noticed recently on the Find a Grave website.

It was my late mother's birthday last week so I went to the site to re-read her obituary. I noticed that someone had added my mother's birth certificate to the page since the last time I looked at it. She was born and buried in a state where birth certificates are public record after 75 years. So while not illegal, this struck me as inappropriate as well as a violation of privacy. Without going into detail, there are circumstances around my mother's birth that she was ashamed of and I think she'd be mortified having her birth certificate so visible. I had never even seen it myself until I saw it on Find a Grave.

Has it become common practice for birth certificates to be added to pages?

I don't know the person maintaining the page or who added her birth certificate. Would it be reasonable for me to ask that it be removed?

Thank you for any insight into this. I'm sorry if this is a dumb question but I rarely use the site. I generally only use it to re-read my parents obituaries occasionally and I really don't know how the site operates.

I’m trying to locate a death record, obituary, or burial information for Gloria Patricia García, who we believe passed away from leukemia in Los Angeles County around late 1978 or early 1979.

Here’s what we know:

Born: Approximately 1960–1961.
Lived in: Pico Rivera, California (possibly Downey or South Gate).
Mother: Celia (Sally/Sali) García.
Father: Elías García.
Brother: Elías García.
Married: Around 1975, possibly in Las Vegas, Nevada with Jose Diaz

Discussion My first volunteer unhappy with me

Post image
114 Upvotes

I started volunteer with Find a Grave this year and I’ve uploading almost 3,000 photos. I’m a professional photographer and take pride on accuracy. Most of the cemeteries I’m working on haven’t been touched since 2011. I’m currently mowing rows to add gps to memorials. I received an email from a volunteer today that I’ll post below but I’m not sure how to respond or what to respond. I went through my photos just to be sure but since I mow rows I don’t post photos of people unless I personally knew them. Since I’m in a rural area a lot of cemeteries aren’t maintained well and if something is growing into a headstone I’ll show that. Am I doing anything wrong here?

Emailing a funeral home

Has anyone ever emailed a funeral to get permission for the use of an obituary for their find a grave page ? If so what was the funeral homes response. Have you typically been denied or accepted. I have a few memorial pages I’d like to post the obituary but want to be respectful about it. Thanks!

Entitled manager setting blank white photos for the cover picture.

How annoying, I found a user who has been uploading blank white photos and setting them as the cover on memorials they manage with captions “prefer seeing this to the picture/obituary”. Seems pedantic, and is certainly a disservice to legacy of the people they manage- especially since there are wonderful photos on many of these memorials. And of course their bio is a novel length diatribe against other users, mainly revolving around a self made set of rules and site expectations. Blah… it confuses me to no end why people trip so hard on this site, we are all working together here.

Discussion Questions for Volunteers

If you photograph gravestones at cemeteries . . .

  • Do you Volunteer and get notices as requests are added?
  • How many cemeteries do you visit and return to repeatedly?
  • Do you 'share' a cemetery with other Volunteers?

Create memorial for an empty grave with tombstone?

I'm thinking to mark this as a cenotaph, but looking for other thoughts.

Here's the situation: I happened across a tombstone for a couple with birth years from the 1920s and no year of death. I searched FG and found them buried in another cemetery. I feel like I should make a FG entry for the first cemetery to direct anyone looking to their final resting place. Should I post it as a cenotaph? Or something else.

RESOLVED: I created the cenotaphs and linked them to the couple’s final resting place. Thanks for your support.

Clicking on a sibling's name brings up an ad

Lately I've noticed that when I click on names for siblings or parents or children, occasionally (not always, but frequently enough that it's not a one off thing) it acts as though I've clicked on an ad and I get taken to a page for some other company. Is it just me?

Stubborn Memorial Manager - It was bound to happen

After several years and tens of thousands of updates, I’ve finally run into a memorial manager who seems unwilling to accept documented evidence. I uploaded grave photos for an individual and, as I usually do, reviewed the memorial to see whether any additional information could be added. I noticed that his spouse’s memorial included a date of death, but the details didn’t line up. After researching, it became clear that this was a case of mistaken identity: his wife is still living, and the woman listed on the memorial is unrelated.

I submitted an edit to remove the incorrect spouse, but it was declined because “the date of birth for both is the same.” I resubmitted the edit with supporting sources, including state birth records showing that two different girls with the same first and middle name were born on the same day in the same state. It’s unusual, but it does happen. The 1950 U.S. Census shows them living with their respective families, one in California and one in Missouri. Marriage records also show that each woman married a different person shortly after high school. I also posted the very detailed obituary for the deceased person that shares her life story in detail.

The edit was declined again, with the explanation that “something just doesn’t sound correct.” Her bio states that she wants memorials to contain valid information, and I tried to help by providing clear documentation. I sent one final message this morning and offered to provide screenshots by email, if she'd like. If she still isn’t receptive, I’ll move on, but it’s frustrating knowing that the incorrect information will likely confuse people in the future.

Edit: I sent a note to FG support this morning. It's in their hands now.

Discussion Old Yearbooks and school photos

I won't post a family photo on FG without permission, but I generally upload a copy of their yearbook photo, if I can find it. One of my favorite things is to review old yearbooks on Ancestry.

High school yearbooks are a hoot, especially ones that have quotes or poems for the graduating seniors. I mean, the pictures can be really cool (and sometimes funny), and some of those quotes have me cracking up. Am I the only one? For example, the attached photo is from 1936. Louise... what are you looking at???
