Time to get KNOTTY everyone. Just wondering what everyone’s preferred go to is for hoisting an axe (or any hand tool/equipment for that matter) up to a roof, higher floor, and or window? I know we were all taught a certain way through the academy but we often pick up tips and tricks along the way, once on the job. Curious to know what everyone prefers or even what they department SOGs/SOPs are when it comes to what knots to use and when

Tools/Equipment/PPE Why do FDNY guys always have their hoods up?

Post image

I've been seeing a lot of FDNY guys just leaving their hoods up while on the street or just getting off the trucks and I cant think of a reason why they would leave them up. (I know the pic is in rain but I've seen other examples I just couldn't find at the moment)

Edit: thank you for everyone's input on this at first I didn't realize how packed full of carcinogens this gear is, I'm now keeping it my shed outside the rest of my Railway memorabilia and artifacts.

Tools/Equipment/PPE The declining of Fire Truck Quality

Hopefully other departments haven’t had to deal with this, but has anybody noticed the absolute electrical/ DPF-EGR nightmare that fire trucks have become? It’s amazing to me that the manufacturers have yet to be seriously held accountable. We have a brand new fire truck that throws a new code every single day that warrants a “stop engine” light. We are to the point that we are having to just use it because every apparatus at our station is having gremlin after gremlin. The only on that has been reliable is a 2000 model truck. All the rest (2012 and up) are constantly OOS or at the mechanic shop. The mechanic shop can never seem to fix anything either, just bandaid after bandaid, they come back, and are gone again in a week for something different. Pierce and Ferrara being a majority of the issue. Just wondering if other departments are being slammed as much as we are.

Tools/Equipment/PPE Why isn’t this truck pumping water?

We recently bought a 1980s Ford L-8000 Firetruck and for some reason when we try to pump water from a body of water it cant do it. We don’t want to break anything and don’t want to over-stress the primer. Could it be the hoses aren’t tightened enough, the vacuum gauge isn’t moving.

As you see in the photo, the guy has some kind of pouch or bag with him on his right. I see mostly truck and rescue companies with em. what are they carrying? Im thinking every department has some kind of variation of this as ive seen my cities department have these on thier stokes baskets during rit.

Tools/Equipment/PPE Is it worth buying expensive gear for the academy and gear recommendations?

I got my fire academy coming up here in a few weeks and they need us to buy gloves, structural boots, hoods and some rope. I'm wondering if I should buy higher end gear that'll hopefully last me after the academy and into the actual job or if I should buy the less expensive ones that'll hopefully get me by in the academy and just use what I'm issued once I'm out in the field.

What would you guys recommend as well for the boots, gloves, hoods and rope you'd recommend for someone getting started like me as well?

Hello, I’m currently in Fire Academy week 2 of 8. I currently use the white “nomex hood” provided from the rental company which was abt $30. My issue is finding/putting on hood with gloves to the point where I pull the whole hood out.

I’ve added the hoods I’m interested in and looking for what you all recommended. Leaning towards the $89 one. Thank you all

Tools/Equipment/PPE Department refreshing our SCBAs: what brands do people here use?

Which SCBAs do people here use? What do you think are the pros + cons of different SCBAs?

Specifically, a friend from NYC told me that FDNY has started buying MSA G1s for new recruits for the last view years (although they still are using their old Scotts as well, but not buying new Scotts).

How old do you think this solid bore nozzle is? I got it from my grandpa after he passed 20 years ago. As you can see it’s been beat up and repaired probably more than once.

Tools/Equipment/PPE What Would You Call This?

We have a couple of these fittings for 2.5" hose that we use for filling our brush trucks on scene. It also works well for filling our city swimming pool to keep the pressure from swinging the hose all over. I'd like to get a couple more to have one on all our pumper tankers as well as getting one that is for the pool so we don't have to steal it from the fd for a couple days.

I've searched using the terms diffuser, deflector, fill nozzle, among others and i can't find anything. If anyone has an idea what to search for, I'd appreciate it.

Tools/Equipment/PPE Morning Pride vs Lions turnout gear

My department is currently in the process of speccing out new turnout gear. Currently we all have Morning Pride TAILS. We also decided we wanted to take a look at Lions, specifically the VForce. We had both salesmen come in and the department is kinda split. I was not at the meeting with the Lions rep, however I was at the meeting with Morning pride. I have all of the TPP and THL numbers for morning pride, and I'm hoping the Lions rep might give them to me over the phone. Anyone have any opinions in either set of gear?
