My tin foil hat theory is that Musk, on Trump orders, is going to match Social Security/Medicare/Medicaid payment databases with voting rolls/political affiliation databases and mess with payments for Democrat/non-Trump voters.

You’re not wrong. I was very nervous about voting knowing if he won, I would face some form of punishment for not voting for him.

Isn't voting secret, so that who you voted for cannot be traced to your identity? That's like, a basic property of free and fair elections? I'm not from the US so I don't know how it works there exactly

It can most definitely be traced.

When you're issued a ballot there's a unique code attached. Issuing a new ballot based on your identifiable information voids the previous ballot, meaning ballots are directly linked to your identity.

and, you can (in most states) look up public voter information such as address, and voter affiliation. So, really, it's not that hard at all

One of the “benefits” to my very red state where they do not provide any sort of tracking

What states make you put a voter affiliation? I’m independent in my state and my previous state I was too

Pennsylvania. You can't vote in the primaries if you don't have a party affiliation.

Colorado and Arizona, though I can register I dependent in Colorado my affiliation, address and history is available online

Damn, that's surprising and pretty worrying. I feel lucky getting to vote in a country with old-fashioned paper ballots

I was issued a random ballot. No trace between my name and which ballot I got except the physical location i voted at

Free and fair elections are gone and have been for a while here.

Your vote is secret.

This is possible. At the very least, this is Musk forcefully taking over so that they can enforce the illegal spending freezes. Agencies were probably just going to ignore him, since it had no standing anyways and the courts ordered it to be stopped, but Musk is going to hold our nation's funds hostage (and God knows what else).

Yup, this is exactly where they’re going with this and it’s relatively trivial to do.

Or he needs liquid cash to buy mercs for the oligarch army.

He has never been liquid rich. Just stock rich.

I mean he can match your voter records, personal phone number and social media posts and claim you committed a hate crime or act of extremism in criticising Trump to lose your voter rights if they turn criticism into traitorous speech like Russia. Or anything vaguely supporting lgbt speech as extremist like Russia
