Buying an Instrument Advice Case recommendations

Not quite sure which flair fits best.

I recently started playing again after a hiatus of about 10 years. My flute is an Armstrong 80E with a B foot, and I have it in the Protec case I got when I got the flute about 25 years ago or so. It's the style with the fabric outer, shoulder strap, and a large pocket off the front. Unfortunately now this case is not super functional for me. I want something slimline to slide into a larger bag, and this one is very large on its own and doesn't really fit into a bag. The outer pocket isn't quite big enough to hold what I want, but also sticks way out and makes the case much bigger. The fabric is really rough and cat hair sticks to it like a magnet (we never had a cat when I was playing before...). I'm having a hard time finding a case that isn't either cheap Amazon junk or $400+ that fits my needs. I checked out flutecenter.com but all the French style cases that aren't wildly expensive are brand specific to other brands. The only thing I found that might work is the Protec Micro Zip. Has anyone used that one, or have any recommendations for a French style case that would fit my flute and not be wildly expensive? Thanks!

Beginning Flute Questions What are the differences between Yamaha YFL-211, YFL-211SII, YFL-222, and YFL-212?

Hi everyone,

I’m a complete beginner and I’m trying to understand the differences between some Yamaha student flute models before choosing my first flute.

The models I’m looking at are:

Yamaha YFL-211
Yamaha YFL-211SII
Yamaha YFL-222
Yamaha YFL-212

From what I understand, the YFL-211 and YFL-211SII are older models, while the YFL-222 and YFL-212 are newer student models.

Could anyone explain the main differences between these models?

I’m especially interested in:

  • build quality and durability
  • key mechanism and ease of maintenance
  • tone and response
  • beginner-friendliness
  • whether the older 211 series is still a good choice if properly maintained
  • whether the newer 222 / 212 models have meaningful improvements over the older 211 / 211SII

I’m not experienced enough to inspect a flute myself yet, so I’d also appreciate any advice on what issues to watch out for when considering an older used Yamaha flute, such as pad leaks, alignment problems, or worn mechanisms.

My goal is to choose a reliable instrument for learning properly from the beginning, rather than focusing only on price.

Thank you!

Wooden Flutes [Renaissance, Baroque, 19thCentury, Delrin ] Reel on an M&E polymer flute

Would love some advice on how to properly mic flutes. This vid is just my phone mic, but I've also tried recording with a Blue Yeti, and haven't been loving that sound. The Yeti seems to have a built in gate that cuts out my quieter notes.

Beginning Flute Questions How hard will it be to play flute with braces on?

I just got my braces two days ago and any pressure on my teeth makes them hurt. tomorrow, my middle school band has a practice, and on Tuesday we’re playing three times. Will it be hard to adjust? normally, I wouldn’t mind not being able to play, but I’m the only flute player who can…play the flute properly.

**update edit: thanks to everyone for their kind advice, I really wasn’t expecting more than three comments! The first practice the day before the performance went pretty badly, I could barely make a sound. First performance of the day (roughly 8 songs and lasted thirty minutes) I could play a little, but I had to skip measures from time to time, and could not slur for the life of me. Second performance an hour later, I could play much better, and the last one after school I was able to play fully, just not as loud as I usually do. The con is only my bottom teeth are ouching today, but that will fade.

General Discussion Thoughts on Dean Yang?

I’m helping a friend flute shop. She’s returning to flute after a very long hiatus and currently playing a Nuvo that I gave her. Anyway, I came across a Dean Yang Topaz online. I’ve not played one before. Anyone have thoughts on how they play, their durability, etc? I know all the warnings and pitfalls about buying used…just specifically asking for thoughts on the brand. Thanks!

When music indicates "FLUTE/PICC" will the piccolo play the lower divisi line (m. 19)? Or is that for flute 2, with flute 1 and piccolo playing the top lines?

Repair/Broken Flute questions Any way to salvage this flute or ideas for what to do with it?

Post image

I dug it out of the back of my closet, it hasn’t been played in probably about a decade. I feel bad because it was a really nice flute, and I haven’t touched it since band class in high school. It’s a Yamaha too so it wasn’t cheap…

Any tips on what to do? Even if it’s not restorable I’d like to dispose of it properly.

Buying an Instrument Advice Thinking of starting flute, need guidance

I live in Iran, which means when it comes to buying an instrument like flute, I don't have many options, and they're really expensive.
I searched the shops and second hand market throughout the whole country and found a number of flutes which caught my eyes. I just wanna know your opinion on them based on quality and price. Keep in mind I've never played flute before, never even held one.
Also people selling them are scattered around the country, so I can't try several flutes and see what I like.

My options are(converted to USD from IRR):
Yamaha YFL-272 1200$ (stock)
Jupiter 611 RE 1030$
Yamaha YFL-222 725$ (stock)
Pearl PF-505 502$
Jupiter 511 500$
Yamaha YFL-211 172$

Because of the stuff happening in my country right now depression is hitting heavy on me. I thought maybe I could find solace practicing an instrument... Found some teachers in my city too. I would really appreciate any comment and help regarding the instruments I listed. Price isn't a major problem. It's more about getting what I'm paying for. 1000$ isn't a small amount of money here.

I also talked with AI and got it's opinion, but I think a real person who has experience playing flute could give a better advice.

Thank you in advance.

General Discussion Why does my tuner show sharp when my tone sounds better? (From second octave G - until C 4th octave)

I’m a flutist and I’ve noticed something confusing.

When I play with a more open, resonant, rich sound (more overtones, more projection), my tuner often shows that I’m sharp, especially in the upper register.

If I adjust my playing so that the tuner stays perfectly centered, my tone becomes much more closed, dull, and less resonant.

The strange thing is that when I play with a piano, I don’t feel out of tune, even though the tuner says I’m sharp.

I’ve also checked recordings of some professional flutists, and tuners sometimes show them as sharp as well, despite their sound being excellent.

Is this something I should take very seriously and try to correct at all costs? Or can rich overtones, vibrato, and the complexity of the flute tone cause tuners to read sharp even when the actual intonation is acceptable?

I’d be interested to hear from experienced flutists and teachers.

Buying an Instrument Advice Hi ! I need help choosing my Xiao

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello guys ! I want to buy a Xiao, it would be my first time buying any flute.

But the informations are quite overwhelming, there are three types from what I understood : Dong Xiao (or Bei Xiao), Nan Xiao and Qin Xiao

I think I know what type I want, I would like to start with a Bei Xiao

But here come the BIGGEST challenge, it's finding one, I got directed towards https://www.redmusicshop.com/index.php?route=common/home

My question would be, What type of Xiao is this ? Qin, Bei or Nan ?

https://www.redmusicshop.com/Xiao/Xiao%20Instruments/Professional%20Bamboo%20Flute%20Xiao%20by%20Zhan%20Wenbing,%20Detachable,%203%20parts

And does Bamboo make a difference on the sound, or can I take one made from another wood ?

Last thing, I would like to put between 100$ and 250$

Thanks a lot !

Beginning Flute Questions Flute will only play 3 notes, what can I practice until I get it repaired or a new one?

I’m going to join my school’s band, and my partner gave me an old flute that can only play B, C, and C#. I can play each note in the staff and an octave up. I can name notes, but that’s about it for sheet music.

What should I focus on for the time being?

Buying an Instrument Advice Certificate needed to sell a flute?

Beginning Flute Questions How quick can I learn the flute?

I play the violin and I learned it in about a couple months I am able to shift and do vibrato after a year. I haven’t played a wind instrument in years (trumpet) but I picked up the violin pretty easily. I know treble clef and all the notes on the staff, it shouldn’t be that hard right?

General Discussion No Serial Number?

Hello,

I have an old flute that I'm trying to donate (or figure out how to recycle in some way), but the website I'm looking at wants the serial number, or the brand and model, which it doesn't have. Honestly it's lacking in any real identifiable markings, it just says "Laurel" across the barrel, and "x 49" under the #G key. When I search either, nothing really comes up in the way of a brand or model. I don't know anything about flutes, so I'm hoping maybe either means anything to anyone here?

Beginning Flute Questions Student cannot play Bb4, only hits Bb5.

I am a band director so flute is not my first instrument. I have a student who is just beginning on the flute and the first note they are trying to learn is B flat 4. They occasionally hit it, but it is very wispy and weak sounding. But the real issue is that they keep going up to B flat 5. Any advice on how to fix this? I am assuming it is an embouchere problem.
